That is why I suggested the referrer checking. I know with Apache at least (I assume with most others), you can do a .htaccess file with mod_rewrite that allows direct linking from your site, but does a 403 for everyone else to the proper contact past. That way, you kind of enforce it regardless of their attempts to direct link.

The readme suggestion doesn't hurt either, or a "About" in the game that points to your domain.

But a referrer check in that directs them to the proper page if they come from that domain?

Pretty awesome. I like the different combinations and how it all plays together.

I always wanted to write a game where you control a golem who only understands commands in Lojban. Its about as fictional as you can get with languages. Smiley

Well, that and the Japanese language RPG that has been setting on my "to write" list for years. What is it about Japanese that inspires RPGs and games?

I think it'll start around Halloween.

Well, I guess I'll still be entering something, but NaNo comes first. I attempt to make games all the time, but I only ever attempt to write novels in November.

Bah, writing novels should happen when you want it to. I like the idea of NaNoWriMo, but once you finish, its best to focus on writing good novels, even if it takes more than 30 days.

So much for that novel I was going to write.

The game writers don't like the novel writers. Its like a creative Romeo and Juliet using websites as the individual families. Smiley If we do this in October, I'll work on it. Otherwise, I have a novel of my own (not NaNoWriMo though) to work on. Just want to know what I'm doing.

I have to wait... another month?  Cry

Actually, the next one will probably be the Lovecraft/Commonplace Book compo, for Halloween.

So, silly set of questions. Is this going to be the next one? And does it start today if it is? Or, was it just a suggestion?

Slime Forest Adventure? Its a RPG-like Kanji-learning game.

Those were some amazing looking games (I played a bunch from playthisthing). Gives me a bar to aim for. Smiley

Um, minor note, rename your image files before you post them here. Smiley You know, for all those cheaters. Not that any would should up. But, looks like an interesting little game.
112  Community / Bootleg Demakes / Re: Bootleg Demakes: Voting! on: September 30, 2008, 05:16:14 AM
One little spoiler about this. This is probably the first TIGS compo which, at this point at least, has not a single entry with 0 votes. Gentleman

There were compos where people didn't vote for themselves?

I never vote for myself unless the rules say I have to (some writing contests mandate authors vote for themselves but usually you get more than one vote). I figured, if someone else likes it, it makes it easier to identify how many major features/upgrades to add to the game. Smiley

I meant to finish reading this.

You'll want to do it soon. The book is being pulled off the Internet September 30, which is less than twelve hours from now. I just finished it a few minutes ago, and I'm glad I had.

What exactly is this, and is it worth reading? The frontpage seemed more sensationalist than I usually care for.

A fairly well-written, first person, urban fiction with a nice touch of demons, dimensions, humor, and horror. The writer is actually pretty good at bouncing between the humor and horror and sometimes has a lovely description that just sits in the back of your head for a few hours. Ignoring the front page stuff, which is a glorified (I'm making money and getting the free stuff offline; I'm starting a new project), I'm enjoy it as a story in itself.

Ah, shit, I forgot that we're at the end of the month. Well, I'll be saving some pages, on #22 right now. Smiley
115  Community / Bootleg Demakes / Re: Lethe's Yarn [STOPPED] on: September 28, 2008, 10:13:12 AM
Well, that would make it somewhat hard to play, wouldn't it? Smiley Looks like I have it hard-coded for 1280x960. If you want, I can switch it back to 640x480 on the next Windows reboot (I use Linux most of the time). I meant to make it user selectable (and optionally full screen), but just ran out of time and energy.

Oh, and thank you for responding, I was getting discouraged.

He was also disbarred for acting like a bad lawyer, not following the rules of engagement (i.e. talking to the opponent's customers directly instead of through the lawyer), constantly raising issues, overwhelming judges with piecemeal information even when asked not to, violating court orders, and basically being a dick as a lawyer.

The legal thing above basically just lists what behavior that resulted in the recommendation for permanent disbarment (as opposed to the temporary of the original request) and that he is not allowed to file anything on his behalf to avoid this. That is important since he's been sending things nearly constantly back to the judge but no other Florida lawyer in their right mind would file those papers for him, so they are being circular bin'd.

So why not pick 2 minutes? Still a prime number and small and midpoint of the two viewpoints.

Lulu is  Kiss

Actually, I love Vector Man too (one inspiration for my own web comic), but some people really seem to hate the lack of arms and legs. I don't know why, but somehow that little thing seems to turn off some people.

That also describes Final Fantasy for me. Smiley I love it when I find the no random encounters bit (ditto for Enchanted Arms) because then you can just enjoy the plot and scenes.
120  Developer / Art / Re: Is Poser worth buying? on: September 23, 2008, 11:33:42 AM
The original Poser was just a body posing tool with a very plain model. It gave you the flow (see the Gesture Drawing homework page), shape, and volume stuff, but it wasn't really fancy. Kind of like those wooden dolls you can pose and draw.

Then people wanted a bit more, like make the figure fatter or change the shape and see how it works, or play around with it. And different rendering options so it was more than just a stick figure (or whatever it originally was). From there, it kind of got a life of its own.

The Poser we see now came from when the program became less of a life drawing guide and a tool to create results directly. It does a lot more than its original purpose and basically created an entire industry around it (Daz3d and other sites) because it was so easy to throw together some naked models and have them bang around. Okay, there are other purposeses, but you know that is what most people do at first.

That is one reason the models in Poser are off scale by an obscene amount, backwards compatibility with the original hacked-together application. But, the original really was for "fine artists" because they used it as a tool, then used it to guide their hand drawings.
