Fair enough, I did notice the characters in SSFIV looking like toys as well. However, I liked the effect that had. It may have had the feeling of a puppet show, but at least it felt like a real puppet show... if that makes any sense. I never expected the Street Fighter characters to trick me into believing they were live humans in the first place anyway, what with their exaggerated designs.
But the effect in Street Fighter wasn't what won me over, however. It was mostly how I felt while exploring the environments of Rayman. It's hard to describe, but when you hit the R button and go into first person look mode, and see the whole level laid out in front of you, receding back like a diorama, it's exciting in a way I don't feel with the 3d turned off.

I got Rayman 3d and Street Fighter for it. Rayman is pretty good. I only played a little of the original Rayman 2, so it's mostly new for me. The controls are nice, the camera seems improved, I like the artwork, and it's fun. There's also a lot of cool set pieces that show of the 3d effect well. Street Fighter has always confused me, I'm not much of a fighting game fan, but I got it because it seems like the highest quality launch title. The street pass feature is really fun. I think I might like that part more then actually fighting. I also really like the AR card stuff, I can see a lot of potential with that in the future.
I initially thought the 3d effect would just feel gimmicky to me, and that I'd turn it off after a few days and never use it again-- but I actually feel the opposite. I think it really adds something to these games and I can't get enough of it. I have a theory that 3-d seems like a gimmick for movies and other passive media because of an emphasis on focal points and composition. It reduces the 3d effect to just a distraction working against those things. However, in interactive media, 3-d increases the sense of space that you as a player are exploring. There's no set composition, no single focal point for the 3-d to dilute. It really seems to actually enhance the feeling of immersion in games.

Sweet. Very clever use of texture. Christoffer: Is there a smooth modifier on that model? If not, I think you're starting out with too many polygons. Try working with the most basic geometry you can, then letting a smooth modifier do the rest. That would also help you tweak the proportions more easily.

Thanks, yeah I want to see if I can get him controllable in Unity. No game planned, but I want to animate him and at least have him running and jumping around a simple environment. It's mostly to serve as a portfolio piece to show my game art, interactively.
Willy-wilson, that sword is great. I especially like the bolt holding it together.

Those aren't USB if I recall correctly. I can't use one of those anymore Also, the DualShock 3 sucks as a PC controller. Several games/emulators and Xpadder have problems with it. But I'm too cheap to buy a dedicated controller for PC. You can sometimes find good ones at second-hand shops for good deals. Usually you just need to find the driver online somewhere and you're good to go.

Here is the final lineup for a group of pirates I designed: you all can visit http://jajitsu.tumblr.com/ for the concept sketches of each pirate. These are really great! Tons of personality in each one.

I did this low-poly character recently. I was shooting for something like DS specs.

Spiral Knights, Minecraft, SSB: Brawl, and I caught myself playing Tetris for an hour the other night while trying to put away my old gameboy.
