eh just be happy knowing that you misinterpreted me ups! my bad , sorry for that oh and anyone else played The World Ends With You? - that had one of the most retarded yet awesome battle systems I've seen for a while, top and bottom screen - stylus and d - pad. It improved my multitasking skills!
I must admit that TWEWY's system is something I'd like to try, it seems interesting the d-pad and stylus combo (and how that reinforces the pairing of characters). It seems to be a system that can't be fully explained with words, and must be experienced instead...

* The glassmakers' town in Loom, and especially when the undead priest/death/chaos incarnate takes the scythe.
killing rusty when you use the mirror spell and then talking to his spirit... made me feel guilty as hell I have a lot of these, but one that always stuck with me was in planescape torment, when you enter your own tomb and start reading the walls. that was a real 'keiser soze' moment in videogames -not those boring twists you can see coming a mile away...

I personally have always wanted to play a 'regular' rpg with a a tactical rpg battle system (ff tactics and disagea style)
gold box series? wasteland? dark sun? realms of arkadia? I mean... pretty much every game before the 1st person combat (eye of the beholder, wizardry, etc.) sported tactical battles along a stage/scenery. With a dosbox front end is pretty easy to play dos games now (gold box series are like 400kb each!), is depressing how little rpg stories have changed over the years though... If you haven't you should really go and play those. Don't miss the middle ultimas :D and staying on topic... fallout's system is pretty much a turn based tactical thingy, but every time I replay it it just feels right. The same goes for baldur's gate (and all the games in the infinty engine). I remember two games, one was silver, which had you drawing gestures for sword combat, was kinda neat, but then you realized spells were in a hotkey, and that there weren't many moves... The second one, can't remember the name, but the system was like six hotkeys, and you assigned attacks/spells, and chained combos... which now that i think of it it was pretty much the same as square's vagrant story (really cool that one, very dynamic flow, though unwieldy for a party/multiple characters). I guess you could take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_vs._turn-based_gameplayi has a pretty comprehensive list. and I love the fighting game idea. and a card game, a la magic could work too. and now i'm going to shut up.

I pretty much ignore my beard until it starts to eat my face. then I freak out and use an electric razor. I guess that makes me a retrosexual??
not really
and this thread it's not weird at all. It's perfectly normal for the ladies & gentlemen to discuss such a fine topic since it's regarded as one of the three fundamental pillars of a civilized conversation.

I'm reluctant of posting in this thread if only because the pure and historic awesomeness that has been posted before... still, Quick "8-bit" hero for the 2beegames mini contest, took me about an hour. Looked up the specs for nes sprites in pixelation, but ended ignoring pretty much everything except colors. Ditched the Nes palette and replaced with CGA mode 5. Don't like much how it ended though, too combine-y for it's own good. these are old pixels from about a year or so. 1x 2x I deffintely need to learn proper shading

It's possible, yes. I'm not good at all at coding, but I've been looking examples some time ago.
First, you could browse GM official forums, there are a lot of tips in the advanced/experts threads. Second, get your hands around ultimate3d, there are other 3d APIs adapted to GM, but the last time I checked, this was the most complete and the fastest in terms of drawing and FPS. It still lags in some secenes -with no AI, so beware-, but already has some shading scripts written (toon, water shading, motion blur, bloom, as far as I can recall). You should also try to look up general tutorials about shading (not language specific, but the theory behind shading and how it works) to get an idea on how to code one and what you're trying to achieve with it. As far as I understand shading scripts should work in 2d/3d since are applied per pixel level, but being 'iggorant' as I am, I'm not sure of the specifics in the implementation of each.
Finally, the "oil painting" look is a common filter in photo editing programs, maybe could try to look the algorithm and adapt it?

It's just so hard to pick one or two... let's see Loom, the floppy version, was the first game I finished and got me started in the whole adventure stravangza that was the 90s. Commander Keen. F. T. W. The dopefish lives! ALL HAIL TO THE DOPEFISH! Command & Conquer. I love these one, made me enter in a RTS frenzy and back then, I actually liked more than warcraft (at least until starcraft came along...) Wolfestein 3D. Love this one, but I wasn't all that into FPSes when I was a kid. I actually missed doom and the original quake and I came to like those all grown up. bubble bobble. I think this was the only game my sis got really into and we used to play together for hours. Never beat it though UFO: Enenmy Unknown. I got these one 'cause I like the isometric graphics, and then on my first play the lack of understanding of the game's rules made for a shameful defeat. Never played again for years until my old PC couldn't run newer games and being totally bored decided to give it a second try. Never regreted it. That's it I think... oh! wait, I was forgetting stunt racer! Now I'm done.

that's me on the right. that's as groupier as I get. 'nuff said. taken in november 2008. I've got some more recent pictures from this year in my camera -which translates in longer hair, longer beard and general scruffines (?)- but it's late, I'm lazy and I'm not that interesting.

La cité des enfants perdu and carnivale had great settings. Also, HL2, if mostly because of the art direction (HL2 would not be HL2 if the combine architecture/style wasn't there...)
I'm fond of the Dune universe* being on of the first books I read and all. Warhammer 40k has a great thing in the "gothic sci-fi" department, but the game has been out there for so long, that at some point I think it's overwritten. A couple of years ago I was really digging yu yu hakusho, but it isn't vastly different from diggin' japanese folklore. Which brings me to mithology and folklore in general. Those are quite inspiring settings, and I like how people develop these narratives to explain the world they live in (we're still doing it :D) Last but not least, the Ravnica setting in Magic, blew my mind a couple of years ago. Seriously, I think those guys have yet to surpass it in terms on creating such a cohesive universe, for me it was an exemplar retelling of the classic fantasy types.
I know there has been others, since this kind of things always attracted me, but these are the things that right now seem stuck in my head.
*the six original novels, not that derivative and uninspired writing done by herbert's son
