Didn't you know? Spelunky-like games are the new indie fad now, like games about running. Earlier it was all Knytt clones and Cave Story-like games!
lol or whatever is the laughing fad now :D

When does he find the time for all the bodybuilding?? And the things the steroids should be doing to his wang! Talkin'bout some serious compensating cycle I found the getting rid of game over one provocative, along with the powerlessness discussion going on. As said, survival games really pull that off. I think having invincible enemies, with no way to kill them, would be interesting. You would live in perpetual fear of encountering one. Maybe even adding the fact they can ambush you, or appear in really weird unexpected places, would make that idea so much more interesting, since you would become super paranoid during the game.
Play Clock Tower. I remember something about stressing players, can't recall where I read it, but basically there is a threshold where the stress breaks the 'fun', so as much as I'm with you in this one, we are pretty much screwed given the tendencies in the industry. If only there was a magical place where people got around and hang around to make games independently of industry tendencies... *wishes wildly into the night*

I honestly can't think what made them use the grayish palette... I remember those fraggin' facehuggers been really hard to spot in some places!

while gta 1 & 2 are technically topdown, I wouldn't call them shooters; they're more arcade for me. Not to mention that aiming isn't fixed and can be a little vexing at times. The older gtas really shine when riding a fast car really... it really makes me wonder why they ever change into the monstrous mess they are now... anyway, on topic, carnivac, from googling I can gather two things: 1) topdown shooters now are mostly done in 3D so forget about sexy pixels. I found these two being made completely in 2d, but haven't had the time to play them so they can be sh*t, sorry 'bout that *http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=37615 -this one looks cool, but the pixel art is kinda ripped from the chaos engine *http://planetfunorb.com/2008/06/21/hostile-spawn-review/ 2) people don't care about this type of games anymore, which is kinda sad, you know

remember scoring is as important as speed for them medals. Gotta disagree with this. I unlocked every character the first day the game came out, and I think speed is by far the most important aspect of scoring. The only score objects I ever go for are balloons, and even then they're not worth losing my momentum over. scoring is just as important as speed! I ended a couple of times just a point or two under the gold medal! :D Anyway, most of the ballons are placed in ways that won't take your momentum away, and there are some baddies that can easily add to your score whitout losing momentum... so to quote valter, "requires some rather creative running". I just run and run and run and run over a course over and over until I get it right! edit beacuse I'm daft and I forget things the minute I thinked of them: Also, it's critical not to make any errors, as you might know the substract points, and in some cases (such as the fire walls) can easily lower your score about 50 points, you lose all the momentum. This one it's a fucking precise game.

@CAsinclair: Ah, ok, I see where you were going. On the subject of survival horror: RE5 doesn't have a lack of anything, in fact everyone and their parasite-infected mom drops truckloads of items once you kill them. I'm also not very fond of the idea of "intentionally bad controls" as a gameplay mechanic.
well, that's not the first time that the press has lied to me
