I'm happy Digital Distribution exists. Games are super expensive here but then again everything is. 100chf (about 85€) for a new PC Game or 120chf (about 100€) for a console game aren't that rare a sight. So when Steam shows up with their 50€ prices, it's already candy island for me. And Steam, as we all know, is considered expensive outside of sales. I think that says enough about retail stores here.

The game is a niche product (programmable cpu, coder in-jokes?) in a niche genre (let's face it, when the last big title was the hardcore Ferengi Simulator X3...), in the MMO market which is so oversaturated that even the big companies are looking for alternate business models.
You then introduce monthly fees, which isn't exactly a selling point for most players and as a result further reduce your amount of potential customers. And let's not forget that people would be much less lenient with bugs and issues if they paid a monthly fee. I reckon we've all seen the rabid Notchboi Horde in action, when Notch felt it was smart to sick them on oh let's say Yogscast for example.

You tell me, why would it be a bad thing?

The concept seems interesting enough. I reckon it's something every spacegame player has dreamed of at one point. Problem is, so far it really sounds a lot like Blockade Runner.

Fair point. With the money you guys throw out for a Mac, you could be buying 2-3 technically vastly superior PCs. So I guess technically PC Users should have a couple of spares to send around the world.
Also buying the game the day it comes out. A bit of faith money since I don't even know if I still like that type of game but it looks and sounds nice.

Final Fantasy

(fuck the wind sound effect square used everywhere tho)

Oh did they ever love that wind thing...
Front Mission: Gun Hazard (Caverns) -

Chrono Trigger: Magus Theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cZeMdFWpEI

And that's just from memory, I'm sure with a bit of searching there's atleast one wind track on every Squaresoft game from that era. Still, I'd rather have Wind Tracks than the mess that is Square Enix now.

I searched for several examples, found several but there are plenty of posts about that already. I'll just settle with the Turrican Theme in comparison:

Turrican (Genesis):

Turrican (SNES):

What the hell happened there? It really starts falling apart at 1 minute too when the track changes pace.

What is up with you dudes that no one has said Genesis/Megadrive yet (other than liking JRPGs/ARPGs)?

I had a Genesis - and was sorely disappointed by it. There was one game I liked and that was Shadowrun. I don't even remember any other game on it despite having several games for it. What I remember most about the Genesis were the terribly messed up sounds effects and music tracks that can only be summarized by "blarggh arrgh TOOOT blarrghsarghll TOOOT TOOOT blarghs" (what a master piece!). To this day I'm convinced they used broken sound chips in their console.
When People started uploading Genesis Soundtracks to Youtube, I used that to doublecheck and hell, they really ARE supposed to sound broken like that. I guess in the end the Genesis Soundchip killed the console for me. Definitely not my favorite console and apart from Shadowrun I really haven't got any fond memories of it. On the flipside, I remember many moments from the SNES. Too many to count so I'd say the price for favorite console goes to the SNES for me.

I disagree. Research shows that text is easiest to read when the lines are of a certain optimal length. Unrestricting this would make it worse, not better.

Words of truth.

Well, he'll fit right into the Tigsource Crowd with that kind of view.
11  Player / Games / Re: Diablo 3 O_o !! on: March 15, 2012, 07:37:26 AM
Nope, not coughing up 60€ for a digital release. I'll either pick it in french or german retailers or simply wait til it drops to a more reasonable level. Which means I'll probably be late to the party by about 10 years but whatever.
12  Player / General / Re: Official Kony 2012 thread. on: March 14, 2012, 05:25:20 PM
It's something of an idiot test. People send you one of those links? Stay clear! They're on your friendslist? Not anymore! They pester you about Kony in real-life? Hold up your mobile, delete their entry in front of their eyes and then slide away in style while giving them the "I'm disappointed in you" middle finger.

And Jedi powers are just bacteria in your blood.

I recently read that Star Wars Fans still implode with utter disgust and hatred whenever they hear that.
14  Player / Games / Re: peter molyneux leaves lionhead, goes indie on: March 10, 2012, 07:37:24 AM
I must admit, ever since Lionhead, I'm having trouble reading or listening to Peter Molyneux and not think "yadda yadda puff puff yadda vapor puff puff fluff Vapor". He's got great ideas, games I'd absolutely love to play are hidden in his mind. But when the games come out, they're nothing like that. In fact, they're not even close. It's like he was talking about something else entirely.
Now I know reality often collides hard with visions, but I wish he'd use less vapor in his speeches.

Try it sometime. Smiley

Go to, say, the GMC. Grab 10 titles from the WIP forums and 10 from completed games. DO NOT preselect for games that look better or more-complete. Play each for a full hour and leave a detailed review on each. This won't really give you the IGF experience, of course, because it's unlikely that any of those games will require you to download over a gig multiple times to find a working installer, or install craploads of weird shit on your computer to get them to run, or be incomprehensibly 'artistic'.

I suspect you'll soon start to get the point of why an hour is not necessary to determine the quality of most of what you're playing, especially when the entirety of your job is to figure out whether it should be passed up for more-detailed investigation by another group of people.

Go to say the Tigsource Feedback Forum. Pick whatever amount of finished or unfinished titles. Play them for a few hours. Provide feedback. Including installing weird shit, fixing problems and wondering wtf is up with those art experiences. Been there, done that. It's really not that special.
And I'm sorry, if you can't be arsed to invest at least an hour into a product someone else has invested a multitude of hours in, maybe being judge or providing feedback just isn't for you?

I'm dying to know if Phil Fish is a nice guy in person. That's the only way I can reconcile people saying he's a decent person with pretty much everything I've seen him write or say or do. There has to be an explanation for the discrepancy.

I'm pretty sure the discrepancy is based on publicity. It's a public image, an act to gather attention for him and his game. It's working really well too.
17  Player / General / Re: IGF Thread 2012 on: March 08, 2012, 11:51:21 AM
Well, internet culture.
Don't agree with something? You're just jealous.
Think something is silly? You're a hater.
Point out a flaw? You're a whiner.
Engange in discussion about any of these? You're a troll.

Congratulations to those that got the donations. This years IGF has proven one thing: The power of one man shiny fucking god. All it takes is one Fish to piss all over the IGF Aquarium.

/edit:
As usual, those words sound a bit harsh.
I'm happy for almost all the winners. Whether its fair or not to all participants, for those that won its a great thing to be appreciated this way. For a certain someone, kid would do well to re-attach to the earth sometime soon. I've got a feeling that Karma might make for a pretty rough fall.
18  Player / General / Re: IGF Thread 2012 on: March 07, 2012, 05:17:06 PM
It's publicity. Some go for insanity mixed with large parts of genius. Some play the minority or discrimination card. Certain people, well they go for the Rockstar Attitude.
19  Developer / Playtesting / Re: And Then There Were None... on: March 05, 2012, 05:25:30 AM
Really interesting concept in this game, I really like the music and the artstyle is nice too. But: I've got to agree with Udderdude on this, it's really hard to focus on the screen and the background and foreground blend into each other a lot.
Some contrast could really help in this regard. It's a great little game nonetheless.
20  Developer / Playtesting / Re: "Dread", a top-down action / horror game. Free Alpha. on: March 05, 2012, 05:18:21 AM
I like this kind of game and it plays quite nice so far. The line of sight is a useful feature for this kind of game, although I feel that it quickly starts to look a bit weird. Reason being that explored walls remain visible but the floors don't. Maybe you can grey out areas you've seen but can no longer see?
The rotating camera was a bit hard to get used to but maybe that's because I'm too used to the twin stick shooter style. Where you aim and move seperately. There's also some minor complaint about corners. The enemies are often placed right around a corner, which plays into the whole line of sight thing - cool. But it's nigh impossible to react in time, even if you full well know they're there. Some small grace moment before they attack might make it that much more enjoyable (to me at least). Could be combined with some sort of threatening gesture or hiss too.

Performance was fine, no issues here. The editor works too from what I can tell (didn't dabble too much with it). Good job so far.
