Worth getting, if only just for Nuclear Dawn in my opinion (doesn't mean the other games are bad, just means I haven't played them and they don't meet my interest). Nuclear Dawn is quite the polished pearl but needs a much more active community. So if you want to get something along the lines of Natural Selection, get it. It's a blend of first person shooter and RTS. It's got issues but its still a lot of fun.

One game, although it was a series of games that lead to it: Neverwinter Nights.
It inspired me to do two things: * Get into heavy mod development for an Online community for 6 years * Get the hell out again and vow to never touch anything remotely similar again.
Rise and fall I guess. I really enjoyed the creative process, making entire roleplaying worlds, leveldesigning, servermanagement, public relations, game mastering, scripting and taking care of the code (along with friends of course). The fall came from the human side of things and was a painful lesson in how a small conceptual oversight at first, can spiral out of control and carry on even though its cause is gone, until it reaches a point where it can't be fixed anymore because too much damage has been done. It's a story including lots of Drama (heck, two players even had a real physical fight over some In Game Issue). In the end, I've gazed into the depths of the human soul and need not gaze into the Abyss anymore. It's the same place. And by god, is it a creepy place. Maybe I should write something about it, after all it's a valuable lesson about the impact of game mechanics on social online interaction and vice versa. Especially since it's something I've seen happening on other NWN Servers at the time as well - and in other games too.

@jakman: there's a lot of deadpan humor in the original german version. im not familiar with the english version but im suspecting the translators didn't pick up on that.
I did pick up the english version back then (TM) and the voiceovers were pretty good. Concerning the generic fantasy game thing, isn't it just a matter of "low magic scenario" versus "high magic scenario"? For example, to me a high magic scenario is about as bland and generic as it gets, while I enjoy the subtle nuances of a low magic scenario. Your mileage may vary of course. /edit: In further news, Skyrim versus <game here> seems to be the thing of the hour. I guess its only natural after the praise it received. The comment thread over on RPS about The complete fool in Morrowind was rather delightful (in a trainwreck kind of meaning) and somewhat mirrors the discussion here. If you've got the time and can manage stupid (hey you're reading my posts after all ), it's insightful and a harbinger of things to come.

Why would you craft coal.
It gets you tickets into the drawing.
It gets you tickets into the drawing which thousands of people are entering and most likely have more coal then you. And don't forget the people scumming the Humble Bundle to make hundreds of accounts and farm coal to send to their main account. Some people have way over a hundred coal already. Anyways, new coupons up for grabs: -50% Psychonauts -25% GSCGames -50% GTA4 Complete I doubt anyone would want them but well, just in case.

Player / Games / Re: Games that could be masterpieces if they expand on their concept

I feel the entire Space Genre could become true masterpieces, if they not only expanded but backpedaled on other aspects. When I think back to Sci-Fi Stories, Series and Movies and last but not least, my own imagination, Space has always been about exploration and seeing weird inexplicable things. The Spaceships were the means to an end, not their sole purpose. In fact, I'd say there was a huge Fantasy aspect in the Science Fiction Stories. There wasn't a sci-fi medium without some odd encounters, finding alien ruins and fragments or exploring the weird. To quote the Intro from Farscape "Look upwards and share the wonders I have seen".
For that reason, looking at the Space Games we've had today, why is it that they're almost* entirely economyFerengi simulators run amok with an abundance of "Pirates" and "Police" Action. I mean, where did this come from? I can see the appeal in epic battles but come on, that's not all that Space is about. Every system looks the same, maybe some color variation or a different setup of space stations but that's it. Throw in some factions and introduce a couple of complex "space activities" like scooping up spacedust and water from the atmosphere. Done. I think there's a lot of room for expansion in here. Instead of a hundred systems that are all essentially the same, give me 10 systems which have been handcrafted to include points of interest and made to look truly unique. I don't necessarily want to leave the ship or yet another feature, but let me fly through an oversized alien relic while the searchlights of my ship roam across the torn interiors and I'm a happy man. Give me a living space organism just randomly passing by and I'm a happy man. Watch every episode of Star Trek and rip it off, read Perry Rhodan and rip it off, watch Farscape - rip it off. But please, no more economy space simulators. :|
* The only reason I put almost there, is because I remembered Freelancer and I-War and a handful of really old games.
/edit: Same with Flight Simulators really, they keep on diving into more and more obscure realms of realism. Some of those can't be played without memorizing a 400 page manual. Cool I guess, but give me story and crew interaction like in the old days. Gosh I want another crimson skies. I want another Strike Commander. Not another button push simulation (which are fine for those that enjoy them, but please, just something for everyone else too).

Yeh. Since it says "(Valid January 2nd, 2012 through March 1st, 2012)", you're kinda on the safe side of things. One way or another, sent you a PM, hit me up in Steam, I'll trade it to you.

Most of the coupons don't have a real point. The current deals are usually better, or it's a valve coupon which will probably be sitting in a lot of inventories until it expires. I'm willing to part with an Ubisuck -50% Coupon however. No point yet, but you'll be able to use it on currently released games, that aren't officially on sale yet, or have a less favorable reduction.
According to the list of applicable games you can use it on (amongst others):
Assassins Creed: Revelations Anno2070 Might and Magic VI
So if you're planning on buying one of those, save some bucks, send me a PM.

So I gave it a try, seems like a great game so far. Graphics are fine and consistent, atmosphere is fine. Sound effects are okay. Even though I liked the music, I did start to notice the loop after a few minutes of play. Gameplay is interesting too. All in all an enjoyable experience and something I'd pay good money for if it were extended somewhat. I think there's a little dollar mine somewhere in this. Definitely go commercial with an extended and polished version of it, if you can.
I've got one complaint, which might in part be because of my stupidity, but chaining seemed unreliable and I couldn't quite figure out why. So I'll report it as a bug even though its quite possible I just missed something.
* Bug report Name: Unreliable Chainlink on enemies. Description: Sometimes, when trying to chain enemies by holding down the right mouse button, it doesn't start the chaining action, but the consume action instead, while the mouse button is still held down and the remaining chain charges are full. The game seems to trigger a button release, where there is none.
Expected behavior: Only use the consume action when the right mouse button is actually released. Error Message: None

Anyway, I agree "Mannschaft" sounds odd but what's wrong with the word "Team?" Though "Gruppentanzspiel" as suggested by Chromanoid might work better for the OP's game.
Nothing wrong with Team. I probably worded it wrong, I meant to say "please pick the word team over mannschaft".

Another native german speaking person here. I'm mostly seconding Sinclairs Translations. Didn't find any mistakes and they make sense in a game context. There are some things I'd say differently, but those might just be the swiss influences in my language. I'd like to further emphasize on one thing though: "Team dancing game" -> "Team Tanzspiel" Teamtanzspiel or Team-Tanzspiel [/quote] Please do use Team and not Mannschaft. Mannschaft is an old, maybe even odd word by now. It's also becoming inappropiate to use it, because of the strong emphasis on Mann (Male person). In favor of gender neutrality and following how language changes, just use team. Mannschaft is almost always only used in in bigger groups of men and some form of professional interest in sports. Generally: Don't be afraid to speak and use English. Especially in a museum and an international exhibition based on games. In fact I'd recommend you to do so, if only because you're much more familiar with it. The english language is a mandatory part of school education over there in germany and you rarely meet anyone under 50 that's utterly incapable of at least understanding basic english. There's also a strong movement in games (and movies) to ignore german translations and just use the english versions of media instead. The german media translations (for games, movies, books) have a really bad reputation as they generally favor exact word by word translations over context based translation. You're quite likely to find people skipping the translation entirely and picking up the original language. An example of this issue might be Dungeon Defenders. In the configuration menu, they did a couple of very weird translations: Exit -> Ausfahrt Ausfahrt translated back into english, refers to highways and how you leave them. Close -> In der Nähe "In der Nähe" translated back turns out to be "close to someone/nearby" and not "close the program". It was a bit of a laugh, although not in a good way. Basically everyone I know switched to english.

Yeh, might be the Ship. I've completely forgotten about it. And I just remembered two other titles that could qualify as "weird": Space Trader: Merchant Marine and Shattered Horizon.

I somehow ended up dodging the majority of consoles after the SNES. I've played a bit of PS1/PS2 at a friends place and perhaps some small amounts of N64. Afterwards, it was all about the PC for me. By now I'd be willing to dive back into the console market, if not for a wider choice of game options and some really great exclusive titles. But somehow, I can't get myself to buy something that is so far along its life expectancy. I'll buy into the next generation I guess. Oh but I do have a DS. My love for sprite based 2D games made me buy it.

- a multiplayer FPS with a weird theme (or maybe they have little good words to describe it)
Weird would certainly be a word I'd use to describe E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy. Even after having completed it two times, I have no bloody idea what's actually happening or going on.

Second of all, like Paul said, why the hell do you need $10,000 to write a novel? You just need a pen and paper. I understand a game developer looking for funding to pay for an artist for his game, but this is absolutely ridiculous.
I reckon the important issue is "self publishing". Which I understand he's trying to do. Writing the novel itself is free of course, but getting it out can be quite tricky. You either find a good publisher, and good luck with that, or you're looking at self publishing options. Self publishing a book turns out to be expensive though. I've paid at one point, about 2.000€ to get a book published. That included proof reading and stylistic advice by an editor, coverdesign, binding and typography, registering it for ISBN and getting it out on amazon and similar services. I didn't have an awful lot of money for an advertisement campaign and the result barely paid for itself, leaving me financially unstable for almost a year. With 10.000$, I could have done some more advertisement and perhaps reached a breaking point in sales. Could. Maybe. Probably not. My personal lesson learned was that self publishing isn't such a good idea unless you've got some ad-campaign ready or have an alternate way to get your book known (Think Metro 2033 Style, quite interesting really). Although having a book out there did help me in finding an actual publisher. I didn't dabble with digital publishing that much, since it wasn't a big deal back then. /edit: While a game developer pays for an artist/software/programmer/etc, a novel-writer pays for editors/print/layouting. There's just as much a difference between commercial indie titles and freeware games as there is between a self-published novel and a novel released under Creative Commons (for example).

you seem like a pretty insufferable dude, guy
Only around here, must be my allergy to pretentiousness that is breaking through. you're allergic to pretentiousness? autoimmune disorders suck dude Meh, just a "No, you!!" retort? Meh. Disappointing. Maybe you can do something better this time, see let me help you: I said "disappointing". Maybe it'll work out this time? Bonus points for not making a "Your mother" joke next. Perhaps a "That's what she said" response instead? What will it be?
