bad idea. you don't see miyamoto popping out of the bushes in super mario do you? and besides, alot of the people who play this game probably don't even know who those people are

Yeah, we might have to drop the "pull-stuff-out-of-beard" concept; if we want the dwarf to be short, his beard will have to shrink accordingly, else he'll be nothing BUT beard.
I don't think we should drop the unique concept just because the new sprite has a smaller beard. Besides dwarfs are supposed to have huge beards, do a google image search for "dwarf" and you will not find one dwarf with a beard that isn't at least half the size of his body

I'm not sure how we could balance the missile launcher, and still make it a distinct attack. Quote's already got a few forward-firing projectiles, so adding another might get redundant. (In Cave Story, the Missile Launcher's only unique feature was that it had limited ammo, which wouldn't work very well in a fighting game) What if he fired it in front of him and it made a small explosion?

Actually I'm not at all against items, I welcome them infact. I just figured it would be a little different to add that random factor through crazy stages rather than going the ssb route. Also like Oracle said, items also means a whole mess of extra animation that would need to be done But If items are included I think the energy crystals from  would be a nice inclusion (they could work like the gems from pocket fighters maybe?)

I think his vA on the ground should simply do nothing. It might get a little confusing if he has a completely different move on land than he does in the air. (maybe he can turn around and a ? will appear like in the game?)

 took #6 according to Inane's post and added an outline to his beard and recolored some bits. removed the kneepads and tried to simplify some of the shadings, because to be honest the dwarf looks a little overly detailed when compared to some of the other sprites
