the controls are really awkward, you rocket up when you jump and slowly float down. this wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the screen scrolling up to keep up with you. if you jump and miss the next platform, it pushes the screen up so you can't have another attempt.
142  Player / General / Re: New Zealand's New Copyright Law on: September 01, 2011, 06:05:55 AM
what
I don't think NZ has any really massive debt.
That and this has nothing to do with money, it's just a fine to discourage people.

so the rightsholders don't get any of the fine?
everywhere else they lobbied they made sure to receive the fine, seems odd.
143  Player / General / Re: New Zealand's New Copyright Law on: September 01, 2011, 12:58:47 AM
these laws can't last. As soon as an MP is accused I'm sure this will be taken seriously.

not really ironic, writing about an indie game brings in more cash than not posting anything, just the same as putting a 'lets all laugh at how shit this capcom game is' post brings in more cash than a 'here is a new capcom game' post.

The platformer genre is more undead than alive tbh.

(cue "hilarious" zombie image macros)

WE ARE THE THINGS THAT WERE AND SHALL BE AGAIN
well that was the best one we could use, so i guess that's that game over

well i do think eld is right, and that even these 'brown shooters' have a lot of creativity in them, even if they are catering for a different audience.

if they're all the same, why do some sell better than others? why are some considered better games by fans of these games? I don't think it's fair to say they are creatively bankrupt, even if the creativity is spent making a game play in a way you don't like.

147  Player / Games / Re: Earth shattering battle between Tilbert Gimmy and brown shooters on: August 26, 2011, 03:33:19 AM
well define what you mean as creativity before continuing...
148  Player / Games / Re: Earth shattering battle between Tilbert Gimmy and brown shooters on: August 26, 2011, 01:22:41 AM
personally, I'm worried when game devs say that they can't make good games because of a reptilian conspiracy with the reverse-vampires to destroy polygons.
149  Player / Games / Re: Project Zomboid - A realistic isometric zombie survival indie game on: August 25, 2011, 06:53:40 AM
I'll accept rogue survivor, but urban dead is a completely different animal.

I don't quite get the hype for this one either.
It's not that I hate it either (since differing opinions must obviously come down to hate), but to me there really isn't anything fun to do.

I think the reason there is a lot of hype for this game is that it is promising the game that every fan of zombie films has dreamt of. You're quite right that there's nothing new or exciting to this game mechanically, but thematically this is the zombie game that every fan of the genre wants.

How much have you looked into the game? The OP doesn't do a very good job of selling this game, too much focus on the shotgun and not enough on the survival theme. If this guy i the first you've heard of it, it might be worth giving the demo a play and/or watch someone play a game on youtube.

If this was a response to me, I wasn't talking about Halo.

sorry, it wasn't, it was in reference to:

There are several other genre stereotypes that Halo is guilty of, but as far as drab colors go, I would say it is one of the least offensive.

I need to use quotes more consistently Smiley

conservapedia, confusing facts with viewpoints since 2006
153  Player / Games / Re: Earth shattering battle between Tilbert Gimmy and brown shooters on: August 24, 2011, 09:03:50 AM
I don't think halo was guilty of sticking to many genre stereotypes.
154  Player / Games / Re: Earth shattering battle between Tilbert Gimmy and brown shooters on: August 24, 2011, 06:05:34 AM
what have i done?!
Shocked

I agree that conservative art styles, because they feel safe, are overused and it does apply just as much to retro-looking games as well (although perhaps they wish to be judged against older games as a matter of compensation).

also, halo is in no way a brown-shooter, it's full of rich, bright colours.
155  Developer / Playtesting / Re: LD48 - BATHOS on: August 24, 2011, 01:34:36 AM
Quote from: Wikipedia
Bathos (Greek βάθος, meaning depth) is an abrupt, unintended transition in style from the exalted to the commonplace, producing a ludicrous effect. It may be deliberate, through the use of an incongruous combination of ideas in order to provide a seemingly unintended humorous aspect, or unintentional, providing fun for the critical reader.

very appropriate
156  Developer / Playtesting / Re: LD48 - BATHOS on: August 23, 2011, 09:36:59 AM
i didn't. my thoughts were exactly as the end text, this wasn't a game.

the only consolation I have is that this wasted a lot more of your time than it did mine.

Presentation was great, loved the pixel art and it had surprisingly good sound and music for an LD game.

Fantastic art and ambient !

what do you guys think about that sort of idea? I even wondered about making a 'package' of short games, each a snapshot of some kind of story (maybe there could also be subtle references to each of the other games within. Could there be any commercial viability in a project like that?
This has been on my mind for a while so there's at least two of us who would like it =)
make that three of us
it sounds like it could be like that episode of futurama, time keeps on slipping.

It's not a good replacement for consumer enthusiast sites, but I enjoy Gamasutra more than those sites because the tone is a bit more respectful (though there are misleading headlines from time to time).
thanks for that, i do have a feed for their features, maybe I should go full 'sutra.

That's why i try to be neutral neutral

by being true neutral, don't you then fall too far towards which ever end of the argument is batshit crazy? like if one side argues reasonably and the other blames it on space-coyotes, the compromise would still have more space-coyotes per capita than would be reasonable.
159  Player / Games / Re: Nintendo 3DS on: August 22, 2011, 02:58:56 AM
what is with the mess that is the eshop? I understand that they want to offer higher priced software than the itunes app store as a way to separate themselves from the $1 games market, but why are they offering worse products for 4 or 5 times the price?

available for $4.50 this week is bridge, as in the card game. They offer the same quality as the $1 apps but charge so much more for them
160  Player / Games / Re: Nintendo 3DS on: August 22, 2011, 12:39:11 AM
well there is a gimmicky bonus room in 2-1 on sm3dl that uses forced perspective and 3d makes it easier to tell how far you are away from abstract shapes (useful in pilotwings) but other than that.... i got nothing Shrug
