I kind of figured that was to do with allowing developers access to the notifications api, seems like the sort of thing that could get silly quickly if they allowed it. is any software beyond the mandatory stuff able to manipulate it?

my sister told me today that she bought a dsi because it was £10 cheaper than a 3ds. nothing I could explain to her made her interested in going back to upgrade, as far as she was concerned, they were exactly the same but "one does 3d"
it's not as though 'better graphics' or 'more processing power' means anything to your average nintendo purchaser so I can see why they pushed the improvement as something they would understand and appreciate but it certainly has pushed them into a corner. I'd be interested to see how they plan on getting out of this one, beyond remarketing it as the DS2, I can't see a solution.

Player / Games / Re: Shoddy Reporting from Kotaku

this problem is far more widespread than kotaku. I used to read kotaku quite a bit until a year or so back when I got tired of two things, spreading one bit of news over multiple articles and misreporting for drumming up some kind of comments flamewars.
It really started to get to me that there would be an interview with tim schafer or something and they would report from it that he was trying to get a psychonauts 2 off the ground. I would follow the link to the interview and read it. their headline would be based on some kind of direct question, "when will we see psychonauts 2?" "i'd love to make it, but it didn't sell well enough to convince a publisher". then, for the next few days there would be articles popping up taking other quotes from the same interview with other misleading or flamebait headlines "tim schafer not impressed by the wii", "tim schafer dislikes cod:mw", "tim schafer pisses on your grandma's grave" (all just examples of course).
Kotaku is definitely being led by the beancounters, the priority is get page views and get comments before it is to be a source of journalism with integrity.
They aren't alone of course, but I'm sick of games journalism being a childish front, I am an adult that likes games, I do not wish to be talked to like i'm back in school, there are more important things to games than simply reporting on how cool it is that you can shoot a guys face clean off.
Since i stopped reading kotaku, I haven't really been able to replace it with anything that does cover games from all genres and platforms that doesn't fall into the same holes. any advice would be very welcome

new eart defense force is fucking awesome. it's just as charming as 2017 and controls so much better now. Still don't think i'll play it single player at all but I've always loved the split-screen

Also, you'd need Japanese points for the eShop, I don't know how you can get those. Unless the eShop can accept a debit/credit card that is not Japanese, that is, because the PSN Store doesnt.
don't japan have points cards you can buy in shops?

i love you, gimmy tilbert
i found the gameplay to be similar of that to peggle, you certainly get better at it the more you play but due to the heavily random nature of the game, it becomes an incredible time sink.
The positive feedback that the game gives out is awesome though. when that game has you by the balls, every failure means you were unlucky, every victory was intentional.

the cool thing is that nobody doubted the studies results when they first read the story, everyone just took it as fact.
this should be the definition of confirmation bias

the video didn't really show much beyond the basic mechanics. I like the art style and I like that you've built a decent tutorial for it. There were a few grammatical mistakes in there, "use the bumpers shoot white paint" should be "use the bumpers to shoot white paint" and "paint the wall blue using the left trigger to stick on it" should be "paint the wall blue using the left trigger to stick to it".
I'm not sure how difficult these puzzles can get, or is it more of an explore and enjoy playing with the mechanics more than that?

I think scam was a bit harsh, what annoys me the most is the way they are misrepresenting the games they compare technology with. they have picked out completely incidental bits of scenery to focus on, there are trees in those games with higher polycounts when they're more central to the scene.

How is Golden Sun: Dark Dawn? I liked the originals, especially all the block puzzles you solved with magic. Been thinking of getting Dark Dawn. i enjoyed it, it retains the puzzle elements of the older ones while keeping just the same batshit crazy story that the first ones enjoyed. one thing I don't like is that you're given 8 different characters to play with but can only have 4 in your party, it makes me feel like i'm neglecting my party by sticking with the first 4 i got. In other news, i'm playing from dust at the moment, I'm getting really into it but I can see how it's getting mixed reviews, definitely worth giving it a try

I'm wondering what is the significance of the number 4048, that is notch's donation?
he tried to donate 2048, it didn't go through properly so he donated less ($2000) and that worked. The next day, his $2048 processed and so he was on the list twice. rather than ask for a refund, he asked to have both set as one donation.
