Woaw! Great game!
It makes me think of Toejam and Earl (for the sound and ambiance).

I wrote a litle review in french if you're interested by a short feedback : http://oujevipo.fr/10-minutes/boombox

Sweet, nice little write-up. My French is not super-great, but I think I got the gist of it! I know there is not much content, but I plan on creating more content for it. This game is really a proof-of-concept for something much longer, which I hope to be able to follow through with.

Ah yes, forgot to mention I couldn't play the windows version of the game, only managed on the browser. It simply wouldn't start.

Yah, I'm aware that the Windows build doesn't work. Sadly, the evening that I started looking into why the Windows build wasn't working, my PC went belly-up. I'm going to put together a new box tomorrow night, I think, so hopefully I update the Win executable and fix that problem. Will update this thread when I do.

RE: the brower version not working on Win computers, this is a new issue with Java applets and the most recent JVM. I've read that they've made it so that you can't just load a jar file anymore, which f-ing blows. Someone did post about a workaround and I may get to that. Piss-poor timing, if you ask me!

Well, I"m calling the game finished for the compo, anyhow. There is still sort of a lack on endgame. I mean, something happens when you get the last tape now, which I hope feels good. Beyond that, I'm just hoping people enjoy playing around with the music enough to keep doing it for a little while. But, I also want a way to end the tune with finality and head back to the title screen or whatever.

Another update, hopefully addressing some of the gameplay issues. You don't have click on dudes for them to start jamming with you now, as long as you are playing what they want to hear. It's just proximity based. Also created pickups for the Effects, so that people know they exist and hopefully use them. :-D

Ah, yes of course! I guess I was thinking of the technical side of things. Kevin contributed several of the sweet loops. Smiley

Yah, movement is a little bit gross. Haven't really dug into why you pop off of elevators sometimes.

Hopefully there will be some graphic flair inserted in the next few days. Curious about what gameplay tweaks you think it could benefit from? There is at least one I intend to make, but I don't want to lead your feedback by mentioning it. :-)

Audio is what I do, so that's why it's the most polished.

New version has come a long way from one screen demo I posted a while ago. Now there's side-scrolling, a lot more loops, and effects!

Added a couple more elements to the basic demo. It's even got a little puzzle going on. :-D

I'm really happy with progress so far and hopefully can get some art going on pretty soon!

I've uploaded a really simple demo of the basic mechanics. It's all placeholder art for now, but should give you the idea of how the game will play.

CHECK IT

This game will be the winner, I can feel it.

Not without totally sweet art it won't be! Who wants to make some totally sweet art for this!

And don't forget about the totally sweet gravity changing level in Psychonauts. The one in the floating suburban neighborhood with all the security guys.

I'm looking for someone to do 80s pixel art style sprites for my music/exploration game called BOOM BOX:

If anybody is keen to make some Jams for it, I'd be happy to hear some of that, too. I'll be using the iPhone app Nanoloop to make all my Jams, to give you an idea of the aesthetic.
