1  Developer / Playtesting / Re: Tiny Bomber (LD#23) on: April 29, 2012, 01:44:20 PM
I tried to play this, but when I pressed the right arrow, the scene suddenly changed and I was in a lava pit.

I tried again with the window maximized but the character would not move from his starting position. The frame-rate was super low in both cases.

I am currently on Vista.

This is a really weird bug. :/
Try to set vertical synchronization to always on (or application controlled) instead of "always off" in your vga driver software. The game is intented to be played on a video mode with vsync enabled at 60hz.

If you're going to keep working on this, maybe having another room/puzzle where the only option is to throw the bomb from a very set distance (where the player stands could even be indicated) would be useful to immediately get that throw into the player's mental toolbox for solving later puzzles.

Your analysis is correct. The game needs more tutorial rooms for bomb throwing practice.
I already know this limitation, but the short develop time of the LD contest forced me to take care not too much of the level design. :/ I'm sorry.
The idea to practice throwing the bombs from a set of fixed points is really good. I'll consider it in the future development of the game. Smiley

Just beat it. It's a fun game and I love the sand mechanics and destructible environments. Two things though:

- The game seems to rely heavily on trial and error. I got stuck multiple times. This is fine for a small game, but long segments would get tiring easily.

- Throwing the bomb up sometimes wouldn't go far enough, so I'd waste bombs by accident. Aiming bombs felt a little clunky, though with some practice, I could get the timings down.

I'm looking forward to any additional work that may go into this project.

As I said above I promise I'll improve, for future releases, the introductory part of the game. Smiley
So, stay tuned! Smiley

@ALL:
In this release I introduced a cheat mode. So if you want infine bombs you have only to write in-game the following word:

I really enjoyed this game. A great atmosphere and an interesting gameplay. Smiley
It was my favorite one in LD22.
I wish it was longer.

Good frustrating fun   Hand Thumbs Up Left

The gameplay is precious, the graphics are a darling and the music is entertaining (although hearing the first few notes again, and again, and again eventually got on my nerves).

Thanks for your entusiastic comment, Ooops! Smiley
My plan is to add various scenarios, each with its own music.
It should be so much more bearable for your ears. Smiley

Minor quibble: give us Highscores  Beg

Luckily I have the right tools!
Give a try to another my game (Linavalanche), which already embeds a global hiscore.
Link for download -> http://www.sfml-dev.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6373

Really minor quibble: the menu commands should accept "space" as well, not just enter, because replaying is "space", so that is one less button the user has to care about.

You're right! I never thought about this. :/

Although the game is certainly fine as it is, I think with some additional polish (unlockable characters, a couple more power-ups maybe), this could become the next Super Crate Box  Smiley

These are things that I had already planned to add, and even more. Wink
Next Super Crate Box? This would be great! Wink

Hey, how is Falling Rocks going?
There hasn't been any news on it for quite a while... have you can cancelled it? Sad
Also, the first time I played I didn't notice bullet time. It's a really cool idea and you definitely did it right! Smiley

Don't worry jakomocha! The project was not cancelled! Smiley
I'm currently working on the game, although very slowly...
I'm happy you like bullet time feature.
Anyway I suggest you to update the game, cause I solved some bugs and added some minor features in this new version ( 'M' for mute, fps on screen ... but no gameplay changes):

Download Falling Rocks v0.5.4

The rocks are falling too fast and too random imo. the game is over too fast which makes it rather frustrating than fun. maybe lowering the difficulty a bit. game looks fun though!

I know I have to work on game speed. I hope to release soon a version with a speed more calibrated on difficulty level and other features as well. Smiley

Actually it became a (free) iPhone game, I made it a while ago  Durr...?
Obviously Naufr4g0 knows about it!

Tommo's Ninja Training is an awesome game too. Give it a try!

Congratulations, very smooth and controllable movements! Smiley
Great innovation in pixel-art graphics.

So I played your game and here is my feedback:
First off, Falling Rocks is very addicting and fun! It's definitely a great game to spend a few minutes on when one is bored. I also like the ability to customize the ninja's clothes color. The music is great and the sound effects fit the game well. Here are some of my recommendations:
*Local high score and online high score
*Make easy mode easier
* In later releases, add more places to play the game (for example, maybe a volcano level which shoots rocks that are on fire, and etc)
*Add powerups, like an extra life, in the levels (maybe impossible mode should have no power ups).
*Add a mute audio option in the options menu, just in case anyone wants to mute the games audio.
It's a great game and I can't wait for more updates.

Thanks for playing with my game. I'm happy you like it!  Smiley
I had already thought about putting some of the features that you suggested me (volcano with rocks on fire, powerups like an helmet).
The option to mute the sound would be useful, too.
Anyway I'm currently working to improve the game!
I hope soon to post a new release with many new features.
Stay tuned! Smiley
9  Community / DevLogs / Falling Rocks v0.5.2 released! on: September 10, 2011, 04:47:58 PM
Changes in v0.5.2:

- The game is finally framerate independent!
- Changed ninja images in menu screen
- Fixed a bug that froze the game for about a tenth of a second when the ninja was hit
- Fixed a bug related to incorrect initialization of in-game music
- Bullet-Time bar is now auto-refillable

I began to write this game the last year. In my mind it was born to be a simple time waster.
Your goal is to avoid the falling rocks, surviving as much as possible and making the highest score you can do.
You can do combos avoiding more rocks in sequence.
The highest level of difficulty is selected on menu screen, the highest rate of falling rocks you obtain in the game.
The game is not complete. I want to put some other obstacles like arrows, shurikens and bombs. I want to make the ground deformable, too, so the game can be more varied.
Consider the game I linked below as a demo. Smiley
Let me know if you have some issues to start the game.
Every kind of comment is welcome. Smiley
I hope you enjoy it!

hey Naufr4g0 !

Gosh, I really love this game. Ha ! Amazing !

I'm happy you like it. Chris Nimmo is happy, too! Smiley

Regarding the thrust that could be more vertical, I tried at first, but then, the Lander keep flying upward way to much. The solution would be to increase the gravity, but then it's less a Lunar Lander than a Gravity Game.

But it worth to mention, definitely. I need to explore that.

You could also use a vertical thrust independent from the others, located below the ship.
I think would be useful to give to the player a chance to brake the ship when is falling too fast.
12  Community / DevLogs / Re: Cosmic Lander [prototype v.0.1.1] on: July 20, 2011, 11:49:56 AM
I think the two thrusters should be a bit inclined downwards, so the ship could receive a boost upwards every time you press a button.
I like a lot the controls in Uchuusen (http://www.afroboss.com/)

The game works fine for me on a Windows 7 64-bit system. Smiley
What language/graphic library are you using? DirectX?
18  Player / Games / Re: Runs on 2000? on: November 06, 2008, 11:35:53 AM
I suggest Knytt and Knytt Stories.
They runs great on my pentium 3 800Mhz with windows 2000. =)
I can play also with a lot of other games.
