A ring? That's news to me. No bonfires at all? What happens when you die?

No bonfire run means you can still light the bonfires, just not sit at them. But you can still respawn at them if you die.

If you want BOTH rings you have to do a no death run - which means you dont need to bother lightning any bonfires at all.

You have to light the bonfires strategically to serve as checkpoints. For example, skipping one and coming back later so you don't have to be sent to the last bonfire if it's all the way at the end of a level.

Latria is pretty cool, but I'm not sure I would enjoy that atmosphere in the entire game. I don't really relish the idea of being trapped in mazelike corridors and not having any wide open levels.

You might be able to hit it big, but realistically, it might take a number of released games to build up enough popularity. I think at least having a consistent source of money on the side is better because it prevents you from falling into a funk if your game doesn't hit it big.

btw is pyromancy worth it for a quality build with very low int and fth considering the change in scaling? i cant seem to find a straight answer to this on the internets.

Yes. It still barely scales with Fire BNS anyway.

Lately I've been thinking about quitting my job and I found this thread. Giggle

Pros of quitting: You might make a smash hit indie game.
Cons of quitting: You'll get so angry afterwards that you'll cancel the sequel and quit.
46  Player / General / Re: I never noticed this before, but there are so many indie bashers! on: June 07, 2014, 03:39:01 PM
People bash (Insert random AAA game here) equally as much, so I don't see the big thing about people bashing indies. It happens to pretty much any piece of media that exists due to the internet. Anonymity + soapbox = people trolling.

Even super highly rated AAA games get bashed for the simplest reasons. Some people just have impossibly high standards.

But people who bash indies aren't your target audience nor will you sell copies to them by appeasing them.

The dot in the middle of the O is pretty bog-standard medieval-style carving text. Besides that the font looks completely different.

The fact that it has fog doors is leading me to believe that it's a Souls game. I don't feel like they'd reuse the same mechanic in a completely new IP/unrelated game. I might be wrong though.

A lot of people are looking at DKS1 though rose colored goggles when a lot of aspects of it were less than great. That said, it feels as though many areas of Dark Souls were way more memorable and atmospheric. Probably because there was a more clear progression through and you were unable to warp, so you have to trudge through it so much. The warping in DKS2 makes it feel a little bit more arcadey and makes the areas less atmospheric. Every level is a one-way street, there's no need to turn back and take in the view. It doesn't feel like a hard fought battle forward, just picking and choosing where to go.

I feel as though they could have made it more weighty by preventing warping until you lit the Primal Bonfire and activated the warps in that branch of the game (it even makes sense story wise, the Primal Bonfire could retain the power of the Lordvessel, which gets transferred to the other bonfires). Then they could have had a way to activate the warps in each subsequent area, but you would have to go through the entire area first. (That would probably necessitate being able to level/repair at the bonfire again, but you could call upon the Herald's manifestation at whatever bonfire you were at).

If you don't like the framerate already, then you probably want the PC version and to get DSFix to enable 60 FPS. Assuming you have a good computer, that is.

The library is getting bigger, maybe the sales of the Wii u will go up

Maybe they could make some kind of offer where when you give them your wii, they can give you a percent off your Wii u purchase

The Wii U has the best library, but that's not saying much. All the nextgen consoles' libraries are rather lackluster. X might be a system seller though, if it's as good as it looks. Right now, there's still nothing that would make me trade in my Wii, unless it was a significant discount.

Skeleton Lords - Not a bad boss, though the placement is weird and generally bad. There should have been a more forest oriented boss, and the fact the huntsmans copse doesn't have a hunting related boss is stupid. If they wanted to keep the horde concept they could have reskinned them to "lords of the hunt" and made them send zombified animals at you.

Prowling Magus - To be honest, that shouldn't have even counted as a boss -  they should have been a miniboss like the channelers in Dark Souls 1. Why Behnart is summonable for these guys and not the Skeleton Lords boggles the mind.

so anyway is the demons souls music in the project beast trailer official or was it put there by the video uploader?

It was put there by the uploader, it's the intro theme of Demons Souls. There's no sound effects in the video which would be unusual if the sound track was official. And it's doubtful the Demons Souls music was licensed to be re-used in another game (or that they would want to). The medieval style of the music doesn't fit the trailer at all.

I'm guessing they will make it use the same system as DS2. Which means better matchmaking but still laggy PvP. OR they take the lazy route and just leave the system the same, but remove GFWL so it uses Steamworks to set up P2P games.
54  Player / General / Re: Humble Bundle on: May 27, 2014, 10:26:50 AM
I feel like the Humble Bundle has lost some steam. Mainly running out of cheap, older indie games to sell and forced to sell newer ones at higher prices, they are more like a storefront now than a bundle package except in a few occasions.

IMO, to regain some momentum they need to make the bundles smaller, less frequent but with a better value. Right now they practically have back to back bundles and it makes the Humble Bundle not as special as it once was.
55  Player / Games / Re: So, What is an Indie game? (Again.. probably) on: May 27, 2014, 10:15:16 AM
I believe that "indie game" means it was published completely self-sufficiently by a SMALL studio or a lone developer. Meaning, the game was subject to the whims of one or a few people, and not created using design by committee or the desires of a publisher unless said publisher came in after the fact. If they design a new game while being guided by said publisher, it's no longer 'indie'.

I do not believe a large studio with 10+ people can be classified as making indie games, even if they are an independent studio. Ubisoft Montreal has 2,300 employees, there is simply no way that Child of Light can be classified as indie. Now obviously there can be some exceptions depending on how it's set up.

That's my opinion, and I believe that 'indie' is a more punk-esque movement which the term is currently being overused/repurposed for any small and quirky game, whether released by a large studio or not.
56  Player / Games / Re: Why do people play video games? on: May 27, 2014, 10:02:19 AM
Well generally I play them for the same reason as other types of entertainment, they are more fun and exciting than the alternative (work and/or doing nothing). That isn't including reading books for research or knowledge purposes. Now, if I wanted to maximize my profit potential, I would just work, but my brain says it's boring and un-stimulating, as is most work.

Personally I don't play games because they have less plot, in fact I enjoy books and I often play games that have heavy stories or at least are long adventurous experiences (versus more arcadey fare, that I play less often). I mainly like the fact that games have more exciting and interactive aspects to them, and things like the visual storytelling and music augment the plot to me.

If you have the first one, get EO4 for sure. You won't miss much seeing as EOU reuses some enemy graphics so it's a little bit of a lazy remake. The story mode isn't incredibly better than the original, in fact I'd argue it makes the story of the original worse by spoiling a plot twist.

The vast majority of complaints vs. DKS2 (besides the clear bugs and/or oversights such as the Durability Glitch and the hitboxes, and annoying stuff like how you can't lock your soul memory) are basically nitpicking, or saying how it was different than Dark Souls. But, I'm sure that if it was the same as Dark Souls people would have complained how boring it was and how similar and predictable it was. You can never really satisfy everyone.
59  Developer / Business / Re: Depressing article on: May 20, 2014, 04:21:28 AM
I don't think more games on Steam is an issue, but discoverability may be an issue. There could be different storefronts for different genres, to start with, that can be customized to the Steam player's preferences. That way you wouldn't have to see "Call of Duty", etc. on the home page if you set your preferences to RPGs and Adventures, you would get a customized list of new games.

Unfortunately the Steam storefront is still stuck in "AAA" mode where there are only a few big releases and you better like them. There needs to be more fine grained control by the user over what releases they see in order to boost sales of lesser known games.

This is especially bad because shovelware blocks out good new games right after they release on the front page. There is literally nothing done to promote these games at all.

I dislike Shrine of Amana, not because of the level design but because a) everyone seems to aggro simultaneously, at 10 miles away and b) Mages seem to target you even at the absolute range limit before they quite literally become invisible. If the range of the mages and the aggro for the soldiers was reduced, I wouldn't mind the mages being harder.
