 1) Tried moving the leg up to make it not look longer than the right...but it looks raised instead of bent forward to me now, as if he's taking a step forward...unsure how to fix this 2) Tried fixing shading of the leg to look more like a thigh/rear on the left leg. 3) Tried fixing the perspective, and I know it's very minimal but i'm admittedly not great at this, lol. I'm trying to do anything I can to grasp the concept and make it better. Still working on it.... 4) Added some outlining...that I like but not sure if I ruined the back or not....ditch it?

Thank you for your reply, sir. Ok...studied some pictures of backs and became a little more acquainted with man ass than I'd planned on I made what changes I thought you were referring to and put Edit 1 in the main post. 1) Added "hopefully" more realistic structure in the back and shoulders. 2) Reduced the size of the feet and legs slightly. 3) Changed the shading of the rear. Better, worse so far?

EDIT 1: Edit 2: Edit 1: Edit 2: So here's a guy I'm working on. He's turned diagonally toward his foe in the background (Here's a Shining Force picture for reference ) This is also posted on the pixelation forums as well, but I figure a few might not be on that forum that frequent here, so why not. I have a few questions: ( consider that this guy will be displayed at double resolution at game time ) What do you like about this sprite? Is there anything done pretty well for a non-artist? What drastically requires improvement? How can I improve this shading? What do you think of the stance? Boring, ok? Would this be a good starting point for an animated game character? I appreciate your help ahead of time.

Warning: Just a hobbyist, although not a great one . Took a few hours making this guy, I hope to improve on it, but this is just the 3rd pixel art piece I can say i've done from scratch and I like how its come out so far.

Joshua, I just want to say it's really cool that you offer to help, that's in my book. How long have you been doing art period, and how much of that time have you spent pixeling? What inspires your pixel style? What program do you use to create pixel art? I suck at creating color palettes, any videos or web page you can recall or recommend that helped you in that aspect?

Developer / Art / Defining a Pixel Art Style

So after a few years away i'm back into trying to learn pixel art. There is a very specific style i'm going for, but hard to describe what I mean. Here are a few examples of what I am looking at:
Specifically focusing on the characters, I would describe these with my limited art knowledge as using "Mostly Midtones and Shadows, with little or no highlights." But maybe what I'm looking at is "mostly highlighted with shadows with no midtone"? As you can see, I'm pretty beginner at this still. I'm hoping that someone can point me in the direction of an accurate description of the style I'm looking at and perhaps a well known artist or example of this type of pixel art.

This is Flashback with a chicken.....and I like it Seriously thou, this is a pretty neat game ( only played the demo ) very polished and the game plays almost identical to flashback, which is a good thing.

Like nails on a chalkboard. There is no way...and i mean NO way, that I could ever play this with the sound on, and if I heard someone playing it, I would snatch the iphone out of their hand and throw it..far. Uhm....it also could benefit from a bit more visual candy.. And..... the gameplay is too slow...

They're for a game Hideous and I are working on. We're doing it according to SEGA Master System specs. Virtual beer to the one first figuring out what game we're tributing. A side-scrolling version of After Burner?

Different playthroughs have had the baddies move up and down at different speeds. And not only that, the text has changed from abstract to more storylike as well. It used to start with "The fall of man" but now says "Dungeon" and continues to be different throughout the game. The area where you go back and forth had "Who" and "I am". Now it says "It wasn't" "Me" and "It was" I didn't save the game on my hard drive the first time I played through it, when I downloaded it again the text was different. Hoho! Hmm...weird. No matter what I do, the game runs the same and I never get the "Dungeon, Press Z to Jump, Pussy! " version. Always the storylike text..
