Hey...

I have a GM question. I'm working on a movement system that allows the player to move a controlled object between 4 Quadrants using the Q,A,W, and S keys. The system works pretty much the way I want it to as written, but I'm running into an issue where when I press three keys at the same time, the player is warped off screen. How can I prevent this from happening? Here is the code.
Code:
//Warp to Quad 1
if keyboard_check_pressed(ord ('Q'))
{
    if shipQuad = 2
    {
        x -= 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 3
    {
        y -= 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 4
    {
        x -= 240;
        y -= 240;
    }
}
//Warp to Quad 2
if keyboard_check_pressed(ord ('W'))
{
    if shipQuad = 1
    {
        x += 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 3
    {
        x += 240;
        y -= 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 4
    {
        y -= 240;
    }
}
//Warp to Quad 3
if keyboard_check_pressed(ord ('A'))
{
    if shipQuad = 1
    {
        y += 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 2
    {
        x -= 240;
        y += 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 4
    {
        x -= 240;
    }
}
//Warp to Quad 4
if keyboard_check_pressed(ord ('S'))
{
    if shipQuad = 1
    {
        x += 240;
        y += 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 2
    {
        y += 240;
    }
    if shipQuad = 3
    {
        x += 240;
    }
}

To help explain the code:

The screen is 480 pixels long. The system is set to move the object 240 pixels along whatever necessary axis depending on which quadarant of the screen the player is on in order to land them in the target quadarant.

So...how can I handle this three key issue?

I figure you pixel artists would appreciate the awesomeness here. This little dodad gives you a palette of color to chose from, then provides you with images that contain the selected colors from a database of over 10 million images provided from Flickr's Creative Commons images.

EDIT: An alternative 3 million more images from an "Alarmy" set available here:

Its been pretty nifty for me, since I have a hard time coming up with a creative palette when trying to create art. I figure you pixelheads would gain some good use from this little tool here.

 Beer!

I downloaded, and attempted to play this game.

At first I was like  Huh? and then I clicked a box and I was like  Shocked and an alarm went off and stuff started spinning and then I was like  Epileptic then nothing happened and i was like  Undecided and then I turned it off.

In short, this probably is an awesome game, but like everyone else, I need some direction mayne.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, this was made in GAME MAKER?!?!?!

no offense, but the overall quality of this game is too high for gm (no cheesy loading screen, really nice graphics, no big blue bar on top of window, etc.)

Why would you think that? Any creation program is at the mercy of it's user, much like a computer is only as useful as the person at the keyboard. The high quality art and superb gameplay executed by Verge is a direct consequence of Xerus being a top notch developer. Game Maker can't make your graphics art really nice ( or shitty for that matter ) and the "cheesy loading screen" is a choice of those who make games with it.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask such things, but any ideas why verge looks like this for me?  Sad
*Pic of Verge with Game Maker's surfaces not functioning.*

Your graphic card doesn't support Game Maker surfaces me thinks..

Ok, this may be a silly observation ( and abit obvious) but bear with me, I just started this programming stuff.

Ok, so I've been learning GML for the past couple of weeks, and today I was at the library and decided to pick up a Python/PyGame book, just because I had heard about how easy Python was to use.

So granted, I have only delved into the introductory chapter of the book, but as I read, I start to realize, this is feeling abit like GML.

Are pretty much all programming languages built on Strings,  lists, etc? Or is it just a similarity between the two? Once again, may be a stupid question...

A "Four Seasons" Compo? The game must involve all four seasons summer,fall,winter,spring in some form, be it gameplay, setting, or otherwise.

Just a thought. Not sure if it's already been suggested.

Shadow of the Colossus

If there were to ever be defined a Video Game whose genre was to be "an Epic Adventure"(not Epic like us 21st century internet kids use the term, but an actual epic), this I think would be the definitive example.

Hey, thanks Smiley Sorry you didn't get on with the aiming system though - I'd change it but the whole point of the game originally was to try that out - without it's just a plain auld arena shooter... Sad

Hey Pishtaco! Can you read this? Grin

Indeed it is. I remember now, I got the "place_empty" and "position_empty" functions mixed. the place_empty does the same as place_free but also takes non-solids into account. Thanks.  Tired
77  Developer / Technical / Re: Game Maker For Beginners: Part II on: December 11, 2008, 05:59:21 PM
Question.

How do you properly use the "position_empty" function?

What i'm trying to accomplish is:

If I click a "basePod" instance, I want it to check "y-64" or 64 pixels above itself to see if an instance already exists. if it's empty, I want it to create an instance. if it's populated, I want it to ignore the code.

Code:
if position_empty(x,y-64)
{
    instance_create(x,y-64,obj_basePod)
}

This feels like it should be simple, so what am I missing? Totally incorrect function to call?  Huh?

Yay Dev Threads!

Ok, i've thrown ideas together and thrown them out the window just as quick, but I'm gonna get this one done, and complete, even if it takes all of 09 to do it, I have to stay focused.

That being said...

Podium is a one-player puzzle/strategy/sandbox game. The main objective of the game is to build a defense system around a "core" and not allow the core to be destroyed. The user will accomplish this by first taking "Material" and building "Base" blocks. The user then combines multiple "Base" blocks together to create other types, such as "Shield", "Heal" and "Attack" blocks. These blocks will then serve the purpose of assisting the task of defending the structure as a whole.

The game will start in a tutorial like mode, where the user will focus on creating a structure and embedding it's core within a well designed defense. After awhile, the user will be alerted to something that is incoming. These events will trigger then every 30-40 secs and range from a impending hail of material in which the user must gather, to enemies that will provide multiple challenges, such as freezing entire sections of the structure from use for periods of time, or worms that burrow through the structure in attempt to reach the core, causing the user to have to sacrafice a part of the structure in order to rid of the pest.

This is WIP/Mockup Phase, so there are no concrete things yet, be it gameplay, art or music. I do have a pair of mock-ups though that kinda represent what style the game may ultimately portray. There is no story, no characters, no plot. I'm hoping the gameplay will overshadow that fact.

This is what the game might look like when you first begin.

This is what a more graduated structure might look like, and enemies to assimilate it.

Any questions, comments, or general interest, fire away!  Tired

Oh yeah, as for the name. All of the blocks you build your structure with will be referred to as "Pods". And the Latin suffix -ium roughly means "more complicated" or references a more complicated version of something.

For instance. The Latin "Auditor" is someone who listens to a teacher. The latin "auditorium" is a hall or lecture room....

Ehh, it seemed clever when I created it...heh..

Working on a small SHUMP project. I'm not an artist at all, but don't have any artist friends, so i'm kinda learning to draw & learning to program at the same time  Angry. Could use help improving this.
80  Developer / Playtesting / Re: Star Guard (call for testers) on: December 07, 2008, 11:08:06 PM
 Cool
After playing, i'd say the game is pretty well put together thus far. My biggest problem the whole experience was with the AI of the survivors you come across.

At least three of the times i played through, they would either not follow me correctly, or commit suicide by running into enemies. Funny, but kinda irritating.

I have mixed feelings about the widescreen presentation, given the minimalist design graphically but, admittedly, it gives the game character.

I'm interested in much more. I have the video ready, do you want the file or upload via youtube?
