It was pretty neat to see Spelunky in Game Informer magazine.
Indeed, I finally read through the magazine last night and noticed the pictures of Spelunky :D  had a nice little article about it!

Kudos for the recognition!

Cheers

That guy right above me just brought up this competition... and I had one of those random ideas, ya know?  So, we'll lead the late entries brigade.

 Beer! Self-appointed-ly not TOO late....

edit: Retracted.  Laptop is dead T_T will have to fix over spring break.  Gosh darn it.

I think a short romance compo that ended on valentine's would be pretty .  Something to give to your sig. other or another forum member or your left hand or somesuch.  Or however you wanted to look at it.  Not many romantical games out there.  And it'd be a good time to do one, if we were ever going to do one.

I'd take this rather literally (and it's what I do, actually, when it comes time for birthday & Christmas gifts for online friend(s)).  The creation is what you would give to your significant other, thus not only will the creation be geared towards your other's tastes, it'l also reflect... well... that's getting into relationships, but I think I've explained enough.

Anyways, this is a roundabout way of saying "What?"  I've created a lot worse and given it as a serious gift, this retro talk is just an irrelevant excuse to downplay success.

And to end on a happier note:  I really liked the simplicity of most of the entries, I'm a fan of hidden/implied/etc meanings.

Cheers

I love the liberal use of "yuu".  Durr...?

I like that even his own cock is shocked by his behavior Shocked
What is he doing with his tounge? Some kind of FU gesture?
I approve of this message.

Theory Number One:
Bob really did want to release "bob's game" for the DS, and started this protest in earnest, but after a while he got bored and started trolling the internet.
Likeliness of this Theory: Pretty likely.
Why do you think that?: Well, for one, there's the increased craziness in his posting style. Granted that it could be the sign of some mental illness at work, but I've seen him trolling on other forums before, mostly after he started this stupid protest.

Best thing about this theory, about thirty days after he started the protest he'll probably go "fuck this nintendo shit" and get himself a sandwich at Subway or something. That'd be nice.
...
You'll find out tomorrow, on day number thirty (when there are 70 days left).

Holy shit... Healy totally called it.  Day #30, bob broke.

Yeah ok now he is just trolling. He still fails though.

Dude, that is SO not trolling.  That's really really really sad quality raging.

You know what, it might even be trolling after all.  Damn.

It is useless to question Bob.  Just let his magnificence wash over you.

Slow down, I'm just saying maybe we can learn from example, ya know? Shrug

//----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I sincerely apologize to all Nintendo staff, and all "bob's game" fans.
I don't know what's come over me lately!
I would never try to damage you, Nintendo! I'm a huge fan!

I'm trying really hard here... I believe in you, Nintendo.
You know how hard this is on me, right? It's practically torture! What else can I do, Nintendo? You won't ignore my protest, I know you won't!
Your company must hear my pleas! A young hero trying his best- like Mario, or Link- won't be abandoned and tossed aside, will he?
A kindhearted company like Nintendo would never ignore the pleas of a distressed young talent! I have faith in you, Nintendo!
In fact, I... Ugh... My head... This pain! Why won't this pain go away?! DON'T YOU DARE IGNORE ME, NINTENDO.
I DEMAND THE SDK- AND IF YOU DO NOT OBEY I WILL TAKE MY REVENGE, YOU MISERABLE FOOLS!
I WILL RUN YOUR PATHETIC LITTLE COMPANY INTO THE GROUND AND SPIT ON THE SMOLDERING REMAINS!
I WILL CRUSH YOU INTO DUST AND FLUSH AWAY THE ASHES LIKE ANY OTHER FILTH! ROTTING, PUTRID SEWAGE- THAT'S ALL YOU ARE!

So, is he raged, but he doesn't know it, and he thinks he's actually fooling someone besides himself?

Or what?

If I'm not mistaken, most of the entries in the Touhou series was all just by one guy.

And he's got a huge fanbase.

Hello gamers and fellow developers.  I just decided to register on the site after the Spelunky release.

Anyway, I'm a huge fan of independent games.  In fact, I rarely play the mainstream ones anymore.  I also love Pen and Paper RPGs and a good story.

I am a Nintendo-boomer and have been playing games of every shape and size, ever since.  I especially like RPGs and simulation games.  I graduated from college with my BS in Computer Science, and minor in Spanish, in 2006.  Currently I work as a full-time web developer.

Currently, my favorite indie games are:
Dwarf Fortress
Cantr II
Incursion
Noctis
Eternal Daughter

I've recently been working on my own Persistent Browser-Based Game (am I allowed to link to my own projects?) called Faery Tale Online, which is inspired by Cantr II.  The biggest feature will be the inclusion real family systems (the first MMOG to do it, that I know of).

Anyway, I hope to see everyone around here.  And thank you, Derek Yu, for the great games - you're a pioneer!

Sweet, another PBBG prorammer :D  and just last week I was asking whether php games were included in the "indie games" category, but I suppose that's just as much a yes as any game.

i really like the idea of different places giving you diffferent things i think this could be applied to a collection type game and be really great! thats not what this topic is about though..

1. Take a world map with different colors depending on the surroundings. Forest, desert, snowy, lake, sea, mountain.
2. Make Pokemon clone game to Iphone
3. Profit

(Important!!! Rare Pokemon can only be found when on extremely high altitude on mount everest or on a plane over the Atlantic.)

Use gps systems and altitute calculation (unless gps can do that as well), would definitely be an interesting... thing to do...

Aparantly you can squash the girl to death?  I had the climbing gloves and the girl and I was just... climbing around... and she goes squish... and dies in my arms T_T

Well, I think Spelunky is amazing (I'm a big fan of nethack, etc, etc) I REALLY dispise the ghost thing, though... it makes it feel like an arcade game, which really messes with my enjoyment (I don't do well under time restrictions, which is why I suck at RTS's)

Meh.

Ditch the ghost (or make a non-ghost mode) and I think this game's pretty awesome.

Cheers

edit:

Things I've noticed (which may or may not be intentional)
You drop stuff when you crawl off a ledge (and go into hanging position)
If you pick up a damsel in the shop, and you don't pay, and you put her back down, she goes crazy, leaves the shop, and the shopkeeper gets angry.

One can also press escape to stop the animations going on a page -- works in firefox and IE, at least.
All this time, I didn't know that... Lips Sealed Thanks for the tip!
