"I'm sorry, but that's just my personality" is what bothered me.
Oh well then fuck that noise. The world is a big place, you're young, no time to lose with lame girls. You'll find one that's worth it

I know, the first thing that struck me was how nice she was. I was so positive she was NOT a bitch.
Are you sure she did stand you up? Maybe something crappy happened to her, you never know- never be quick in judgement. Give her a chance to explain herself- if it's legit, then awesome; if not, move and too bad for her.

i mainly prefer the games that take a long time to finish, because other games don't feel very substantial to me. so i might spend 5 months playing through a single game, maybe playing it a few hours a few times a week, getting to know it well, before going on to the next
these don't have to be games that take that long to "finish" per se, but they have to be games that have that much gameplay in them (e.g. starcraft or league of legends, which you can play for 100s of hours and still not know everything about them, even if individual sessions are short)
another example of that is civiliation 5 -- i spent a lot of time playing that for the first few months of this year, and it'd be the only game i'd play in those months
Yeah I felt a little bit that way too about games like Starcraft/Civ/etc., but usually when I start getting into a strategy game, I just go "screw that crap" and just play chess instead. Perfect strategy game- why bother?

I don't play games that I know will take more than 10-15 hours to finish. If something requires that much involvement to be enjoyable, than it's probably badly made. There are some very few exceptions to the rule (Red Dead Redemption comes to mind) but most of the games that take more than a dozen hours to complete are just pure grindan.
I'd say I play on average one or two of these games a month.
It'd be hard to balance personal projects (making games, open source projects), professional life (this is obvious), social life (seeing friends, family, all that), other hobbies (sports, books, movies, concerts, etc.), and personal life (girlfriend, perhaps kids for some, etc.) with more, but as it is I find it doable to dedicate a sunday afternoon/evening here and there for gaming.
Unfortunately, it's just a fact of life you have to come to terms with: you'll likely never have time to play all the games you want to play, read all the books you want to read, see all hte movies you want to see, etc.
Of course, no sleep is also a valid strategy.

I fought long to get him to stay with me, but he wouldn't budge.
Fellow TIGers, take it from personal experience- any relationship where one has to "convince" or "fight" the other to keep the relationship together is *never* worth it and always has an expiration date. The world is big, all of you guys are awesome, you'll find someone that is just as great as you and with whom everything will feel natural. *hugs to all*

Most US gamers I know of tend to favor Japan-oriented titles moreso than domestic ones, except the occasional breakout (GTA: San Andreas/Rock Band, anybody?). I think it's a lot due to the fact that western titles are often very similar to the rest of western pop culture (movies, comic books, etc.): world war 2, zombies, aliens, blablabla. When you want a bit of variety, it's nice to get out of this space and japanese games do that well.

Trying to figure out how Minecraft generates its maps in "chunks" where the chunks match seamlessly.
I need something like this for my game but right now I can only generate large finite maps.
Perlin noise is what you want. It's hilarious how many times Perlin noise is the solution to problems. Yeah, this thing is seriously one of the most useful piece of math ever. Jay_PC: so you want top-view 2d terrain (like in SNES RPGs)? You'll need to use the 3d version of the Perlin function. As for tiling not working right, you must be missing something when reusing coordinates.

I have an iPhone prototype starting to take shape, I will very hopefully have a video and a playable alpha within a few weeks that I can use to post on TIGSource + launch a kickstarter with. If the reaction is positive, then I'll definitely submit it to this year's IGF.

MAN THE FUCK UP You're going to make this girl like you, and that's all there is to it. Don't start with a loser attitude like that- if you tell yourself "there's a 99% chance it will end", then guess what? IT FUCKING WILL. You're going to take that girl to dinner, impress the crap out of her, and kiss her like a FUCKING MAN because that's what you are. And when she will find out that you're younger at some point, she won't care because she'll have fucking fell for you. Gentlemen!
