So I'm kind of torn on the iPad.
I'm not the hugest Apple fan ever. I used to own a macbook, which I eventually gave to my girlfriend. Right now, I have an Acer netbook that I use on the go (net, watching shows/movies, a little bit of gaming on emulators, coding), and a windows desktop that I use the rest of the time. I also have an iPod touch that I really love- I use it to listen to music/watch movies on the go (as a French student whose family lives in France, studies in England this year and has a girlfriend in the US I take the plane/train a lot), but also at home- I usually leave it on the coffee table in the living room and use it to quickly check emails/facebook/forums without having to use the computer, and a couple games.
For the iPod, here are my main gripes with it:
- No multitasking
- No Flash
- No "illegal apps" (torrenting, emulation, etc. which I use on my netbook)
For the first point, I believe that OS 4 will fix that. The second point is not that big of a deal, and the last one...I can probably find a way around (for example torrent from my server and watch them through the embedded quicktime player in Safari) or just deal without it.
The lack of physical keyboard is not a huge problem for me- I got used to the touch's keyboard pretty well, and you can always bring a bluetooth keyboard in your bag for coffee shops/on the go/etc. (Apple's bluetooth keyboard is pretty small).
So I'm thinking that around may/june, I might sell my netbook + ipod touch, and use the money for the purchase of a iPad.
- I can do all I used to do on my touch (net, mails, facebook, watching movies and shows in bed,...)
- Play games (Plants vs Zombies

and Crayon Physics should be way better too )
- I'll probably be a teaching assistant next year, and the tablet could be a cool device to have quick access to my PDFs, etc. iWork looks pretty neat too for editing documents on the fly.
- I'm really excited about Brushes- fingerpainting = awesome.
- I love reading books and magazines, but they're a bit of a pain to carry around when traveling- iBooks is wonderful for that (plus, we're probably going to have an updated Kindle App).
- It has a microphone, so I can use the Skype app to call my parents, etc. (I have a skype international account)
- It's pretty neat to show pictures to my grandparents, etc.
- The calendar feature looks AWESOME.
I'll probably get the 32GB one (64 GB is expensive :/) with the 3G option (GPS = awesome). It's not a legal contract either, which I like (essentially you pay 30$ for one month of unlimited 3G data, with no obligation to renew or anything).
So all in all, the only thing I'll miss in the iPad is a camera- otherwise I feel like it's a near perfect device for me. But maybe I'm not the typical audience either.
