Most of the games posted, apart from stranded 2 and to an extent notrium, are all old and god-ugly. And hard to get. Notrium seems good but doesn't have the resource collecting, harvesting crops, fishing aspect that really drew me into stranded 2.

So what we're essentially saying is that there really aren't newish any games in this (rather specific, granted) genre. *sadface* Wurm online sounds pretty nifty though, i may give that a shot although i wasn't really looking for an mmo style game.

I'd make one myself, but i don't really have a spare 3+ years to blow!

Ok, I have played the hell out of stranded 2. I loved everything about it (well, the sandbox part anyway), the feeling of working towards a goal with your bare hands, the scenery despite it's aged appearance. I've since been searching for good alternatives to continue this new found love of survival games, and have come up almost entirely blank.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I have played schiffbruch, which while fun for an hour, just didn't draw me in. I've heard notrium lauded as a great survival game, but there is none (as far as i can tell) of the whole aspect of using your environment to progress. It's the mix of almost warcraft style resource gathering and base building combined with the first person immersion that i love.

Oh, and they don't necessarily have to be free games.

Yeah, I too have an intuos2 (a4) and i love it to pieces. I have used a cheap alternative (i.e. not a wacom) and whilst i can see it's uses for getting into digital art on a tight budget, it really was a world apart. I imagine the bamboo range would be somewhere between that piece of crap and the intuos, so is probably perfectly good for most people. Enjoy your tablet matey Smiley

Also re: tablet PCs. Have any of you who were hating on them used a cintiq before? I've always had an almost uncontrollable desire for one, but can't imagine it being worth that price. It is the coolest gadget though for when i eventually have spare cash.
485  Developer / Playtesting / Re: My Silent Hill Game needs a Name on: June 06, 2009, 08:08:13 AM
I'm confused as hell. It's all very well to say "I'll make my own silent hill game when i'm done with this one", but you can't. You don't have the rights to the name, and unless you don't plan on ever showing the game to anyone then the owners of the silent hill franchise will have something to say.

Just make a survival horror of your own. The gameplay can be the same, but use some imagination ...

Bloody hell, that screenshot looks absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to see it in motion.  Kiss

Man that really was short. Great graphics, but the actual platforming felt pretty dodgy to me. The collision detection was the main problem. But for 3 days? Very impressed.

Good to hear you are moving forwards, and it sounds like you've chosen a good approach to redeveloping the idea. That picture is awesome, I love that guy's art.

Looking forward to watching the new progress  Beer!

Holy crap that's amusing.

Oh man that sucks. I'm so sorry for you, goddamn computers.  Cry

I'd definitely consider starting again, as the demos were really fun to play, and looked lovely. I'm not really sure about the travelling up the tower mechanism though. What's the point of turning the dead grass into live grass if the aim is just to get higher?

That looks fantastic. The level editor looked like it's going to be as much fun as the game too!  Beer!

I don't know much about this stuff, but I believe that you're looking for the property bubbles.

Property of which object? It doesn't seem to be a property of MovieClip.

If you mean the property of the Event object, that's not going to help... it's read-only!  Sad

Just in case you didn't get past this, it's read only because you have to set it in the constructor. e.g.
var e:Event = new Event("typeofevent", true);
then dispatch the event.

stopPropagation stops an event getting any further up the hierarchy (but still triggers handlers in that class). stopImmediatePropogation does the same but prevents handlers in the same class from triggering too.

If you're trying to bubble a mouse event up the hierarchy, you can handle the mouse click on that object, then create and dispatch a custom event in the handler which you then bubble up through the hierarchy.

I use twitter to follow various actionscript gurus. It's handy to keep track of what they are doing, when they release new blog posts etc. It's basically geeky stalking.
496  Player / General / Re: Biggest letdown upon picking up a new game on: May 06, 2009, 05:02:53 AM
Biggest ever?

Black and white 1. I was excited for years about that game.

Spore was pretty dissappointing but by the time it had been released i knew most of the stuff i was really wanting had been dumbed right down, so i had low expectations. Was pretty dissappointed anyway despite low expectations!

Civilization IV: Colonization
The first colonization was my favourite strategy game of all time, and this had absolutely none of that magic.

Unpopular choice coming up.....
Braid. I had to wait for the pc version, which was a shame, but when i played it i just didn't like it at all. The artwork is obviously fantastic, and certain gameplay elements were cool, but after the hype and other people's apparent head over heels love for it i was left feeling totally empty.
497  Player / General / Re: MONKEY ISLAND 5 !!! NO SHIT. on: May 02, 2009, 11:33:28 AM
Bill Tiller was involved in Vampyre story right? From the screens it looks like they've gone the 3D models on drawn backgrounds route again, which is a real shame. I thought vampyre story was a terrible game, unfortunately. I was really looking forward to it, but the humour just wasn't up to scratch, the environment art was quite nice, but ruined by the shitty 3d models, and the voice acting was incredibly irritating. I have no hopes that this will be any better.

Sad I really want a good new monkey island game.
498  Community / Townhall / Re: Dark Base: Incubation on: May 02, 2009, 11:13:56 AM
Well, it's easy to do. When you've been working on anything that will be used by others you start to lose the ability to judge usability by yourself simply because you have spent so much time with it. Be it a game, UI design, even graphic design. Thats what user testing is for Smiley

Out of interest how many people worked on the game? You mentioned it was before you went indie, i'm curious how a non indy flash development team works.
499  Community / Townhall / Re: Dark Base: Incubation on: May 01, 2009, 10:14:57 AM
Ok, just played it. Died 5 times on the first level and never actually completed it ... I must suck at this kind of game. I just found that the flashlight ran out way too fucking fast, and i didn't see any recharge stations. However, it was fun, and well polished. I for one would love to hear details on how you handled things from a technical point of view. It might teach me a thing or two.

I'm sure I'll go back and try again, but the difficulty did seem pretty high considering it was level 1!

edit: Seems i'm one of the dumb users who needs a tutorial! Didn't realise you had to hold the spacebar down to recharge health and flashlight. I was pressing it and thinking "hmmm, thats not really doing anything!".

. Got to see a couple of those in an actual movie theater last week, which was like a dream come true because I love animation and I love short film.

That was awesome.
