I agree with eobet. I have watched hours of the talks at TED. Amazing stuff. I wish they were longer though, as you only get a glimpse at what the people talking have to offer.

However, I do thing the actual website is, usabilitywise, a piece of shit. Finding a video you want, or even just browsing them, is a pain in the ass. I just tried to find the talk by the guy who made "living" creatures powered by the wind. Basically engineering projects that use the power of the wind to move by themselves, hard to describe to be honest. Can't remember his damn name, and i can't find it on ted. It's an incredible talk if you can find it.

edit: Haha, i hit post, and his name came back to me. Theo Jansen, the talk is http://www.ted.com/talks/theo_jansen_creates_new_creatures.html

Use the Embed tag. This is an easy to follow (and quick) tutorial on it.

563  Player / General / Re: What Would You Pay For a Webcomic? on: March 09, 2009, 01:57:29 PM
To be totally honest, probably nothing--unless it were something really special.

What I could see myself doing, though, is buying a bound, printed compilation of a webcomic I really like.

If Kazu Kibuishi made a few more Copper comics, I would buy a book of them in a heartbeat. Kiss

I don't think I would ever get a printed compilation of purely humorous comics, though.

Kazu is my favourite comic artist. I have, and regularly read, every flight anthology. They are just so gorgeous. I also have a daisy cutter print on my wall. Big fan  Kiss

Unless it totally gripped me and had stuff on sale that i'd actually want, like tshirts that aren't too geeky, then i would pay nothing. I always assumed that most of the revenue successful webcomics generate is from advertising (having a large readerbase). I'm actually surprised that that wiki list was so long!

When the dog in the new trailer said "SQUIRREL" i burst out in an embarrassing snort laugh. Everyone in the office looked at me in a rather funny way!

That looks great!

My favourite was easily Monsters Inc. Mainly because the extras on the dvd were so good. I think the fact that i was in the CG industry when it came out, I pored over the extras and making ofs for hours!

This is one of my favourite films. It is just insanity all over the shop, but it manages to still be a coherent experience. Damn, I haven't watched it for years and this thread has just decided tomorrow nights agenda for me!
568  Player / General / Re: there's a trailer out for that "indie inspired" EA monocle game on: March 07, 2009, 09:10:31 AM
In case anyone missed it, there is now the soundtrack available for download over at http://www.henryhatsworth.com/

Also check out the song that plays in the "about the game" section. Proper british gentlemanly singing! It's brilliant. Cannot wait for this game now.

I was on the old BBC show Tomorrow's World a few years back. They had a bunch of kids making a fake trailer for a film, and a bunch of "experts" helped them do it. I was the CG "expert" and helped a kid called joshua create his monster in CG. Basically he gave me a sketch of a blob with an eye sticking out of it, and i spent three days in front of cameras creating and animating it. Was bloody stressful! The number of times i would say something, then have to repeat it ad nauseam so they could get different angles. And the lights they use? God they are hot! In the end i got like 2 minutes actual air time, but it was an interesting experience.

edit: Oh, despite my name i should point out i am not in fact the juggler from the original post!

Damn that looks amazing. Although the water surface, which looks incredible in a still, would be very hard to animate as it is in that shot. If you did do it however, i would just sit on that screen and watch the waves crash against the rocks!

I love it when people quote the "French military victories", It's so brilliantly ignorant. I remember hearing about some guy called Napoleon fighting on several continents and winning for the most part.

Till us brits got annoyed and booted him up the arse with a wellington, sure. Tongue
572  Player / General / Re: French People on: March 05, 2009, 02:20:13 AM
I always thought it was from stuff like this. I also had this notion that they hated Americans and so why should we like them?

Anyway, I got nothing against the populous or culture though. Seems like a rad place.

Though I do think French is one of the ugliest sounding languages ever, sorry.

Really? I love the sound of the french language. I go there on holiday usually once a year (it's only a short hop over the channel for me) and am hugely fond of the country. However a lot of areas of france are pretty unfriendly and xenophobic from my experience. But then I'm british, so who am i to talk.

I think the inter-european hatred isn't so much hatred as an ingrained attitude of mocking your neighbours. Mainly because we had been at war with each other for centuries. That kind of thing is hard to get away from, but i don't think it actually results in any hatred these days, more a friendly rivalry.

Anyway in britain we're usually more negative about the americans and ze germans!

I remember the videos, and god does it all just reek of cuteness. Great job.

gotcha. i guess if it's slightly smaller than the collision box then you can collide with a steep edge, so not move, but also not register to be walkable/jumpable. Still, it's not game breaking thanks to the rest button Smiley

So how are you deciding whether or not he is allowed to jump? Checking his speed or whether there is ground/boxes beneath either of his feet? That was the main issue for me, and it worked most of the time, just occasionally got a bit stuck.

I guess i'm getting a little off topic here though.  Coffee

Oh .... well how come it's so finicky about landing on slanted surfaces. Is box2D controlling your character movement as well? If so what is the character's particle type, a rectangle particle that you replaced the draw functionality and stopped rotating? I thought that the boxes were using some engine like box2d (and they react great) but i assumed the character was separate and just using information from the box2d engine.

What are you supposed to say? SORRY!? The physics problems are probably because physics are HARD TO PROGRAM, and "pointless"? Give me a break.

I think part of the problem with that is people are now so used to games using things like the box2D and APE engines that they expect physics of this kind to be more responsive/accurate. It DID get frustrating when you got stuck because the block you were on was at slightly too steep an angle and you had to restart, but like I said, I still enjoyed it. People are always more critical in blog comments it seems, and often without any actual constructive parts to their comments. Props to hideous for reacting so patiently.
