Giant mess, but also a giant combo.

I clean my desktop every month and start making a mess again.

Are there just so many people who haven't played half-life, or do you really prefer part 2? D:
807  Player / General / Re: Best games ever made! on: April 20, 2008, 07:25:33 AM
Half-life (the first one of course) Awesome "story". It's not really a game, more a journey. If you manage to get into it you'll see that this is the best experience any game can give you.

Grim Fandango Best adventure I ever played.

Starcraft 3 Totally different races, and perfectly balanced. The cool background story finishes it of.

Free games:

Cave Story WHAT?

Nijuken/Nikujen/Whatever Awesome platforming, you can get extremely skilled at this.

Black Shades Awesome fps, new concept = defend the VIP. Simple yet awesome.
808  Developer / Playtesting / Re: UPDATE, ALPHA for Super ninja Hunter on: April 20, 2008, 01:26:32 AM
Funny and good looking ... the game :D. Stands out from the usual grappling hook games as for once there is action and humour. Playing with dropped weapons is fun. Cannot really go wrong with small-window pixel-art games either, in my opinion Wink

I'm sure there are some free sound archives out there that have these sort of sounds. Then again I think sfxr can make sounds that match the game's style well, or just record your own sounds and edit them until you get the desired effect.

Bugs:
- In the first area, second room, you can catapult yourself over the exit and fly off the screen, outside the level area. Happened the fist two times I tried to get to the exit.

This and that:
- Speech balloons vanish too fast. I could hardly read half the text because it's so small and I had to fight at the same time as I was reading.
- Dropped weapons vanish too fast. I'd like to play with them some more. Can't you just leave them? Adds a bit more detail to levels, too.
- The quality of the title screen graphics isn't as good as the great pixel art of the game itself. Kind of a contrast that makes it look a bit inconsistent.

First of all: Thanks for playing!
I decided to use sfxr. It works better then expected with the midi music.

-Out of room bug fixed.
-Use of speech balloons will be reduced and their movement will be made better.
-I can't leave them because arcade mode will lag like hell then. But when you hold on to them they don't disappear. And their damage is low anyway. Grapling onto enemies and smashing them into walls is a better strategy.
-Title art is old. It'll go.

Couldn't get past the second boss, but here's what I got to say so far:
Weapons, or even just the heavier ones, should be able to damage enemies if you swing them with the grappling hook. If you're worried about it being overpowered you could make the damage velocity dependent, i.e. if the axe is going fast as a race car it can cleave through the little buggers.
Spikes are fucking annoying as is, maybe lessen the damage to 2 or even 1?
There should be a button to skip cinematics. Having to wait for the betting joke in the second animation gets old.

Thanks also. Lives will be added, so death at boss will just restart that room.
-Weapons do damage enemies, just not a lot. A hit effect for enemies will be added soon.
-Spike code made better, sometimes they instantly killed when you went to fast. Now it's just 1 damage.
-ok

Lovely indeed. <3 Awesome graphics.
810  Developer / Playtesting / Re: UPDATE, ALPHA for Super ninja Hunter on: April 17, 2008, 06:26:22 AM
Alpha is out. Okay, blatant copy from poppenkast hidden forums:

Okay, I'm starting to get close to the end. Only 10 days left till compo deadline, and I'm in some sort of little creation dip. If you want to help me please play this and comment.  Kiss

Therefore, I throw this sloppy file here now.

IF IT GIVES an error in the menu, delete save.snh out of your folder.

Just play the story mode, it has 4 out of 5 areas now. So I still have to make one. The first 2 areas have cutscenes. There is music by tim, area 4 music will be changed.

Arcade mode is still a quicky, needs tweaking, spawning done, etc. It's not balanced or whatever yet. You can still try, scores aren't saved.
Oh about scores: Campaign scores aren't saved properly either I think.

A list of things I really need to change soon:

-the hud (ammo for rockets is not displayed, same for everything except chainsaw, which has a crappy bar)
-proper score (online highscore for total campaign score, and arcade score)
-sounds!!!
-area 5
-area 3 and 4 and 5 cutscenes
-a hit effect: now you don't see when you hit something/how much damage you do/when you're hit
-fix boss 4, the walls sometimes bug. And it's too hard.
-minigames for when you complete the game on easy/normal/hard
-some more effects, for like wall destroyage
-proper deaths, all enemies die as standard ninjas
-some tiles, like trees and snowmen in area 4

Please play, report any bugs, etc. If you can't beat an area, use n to skip a level. Don't skip the bossfight, since it will then fuck up.

Hopefully have fun!

Oh some screens:

EDIT:

One last thing: I really don't know what to do with the sound effects... Using ripped stuff is sort of mean on something this "big". I see it as a big game, since I haven't really made anything bigger then gregg the egg. But yeah, either used some ripped/stolen but nice shotgun sounds, OR use sfxr, for some funky retro sounds. What do you guys think? Any advices? HALP! Sad

There'll be resolution options, don't worry.

Resolution is 160x120 btw, so for full experience play windowed at 320x240. Tongue
