I really like the tutorials from html5rocks.
162  Developer / Technical / Re: Which engine/library/platform do you use for iPad development? on: October 20, 2011, 12:42:14 AM
While the other engines are good and portable, trying to integrate some native stuffs is really a pain and not so straight forward as the native one. For example, Game Center, OpenFeint integration, photo libraries, camera, etc..

With monkey it's no problem, because it does translate/compile into a real XCode project - so you have a native project (you can also wrap it of course).

You might also have a look at Corona for iOS / Android. Everthing is written in LUA - it's very easy and has a big and easy-to-use api (I don't like LUA that much, because it isn't type-safe, but I know some developers who LOVES it and they have done serveral cool games with it).

I think the basic mechanic is quite nice, but you should improve it so it feels more smoother.

I think when executed right this could be turned into a nice, entertaining game.

I quite like Monkey already (http://www.monkeycoder.co.nz/). It's similar to BlitzMax/BlitzBasic but you can choose between various target languages (AS3, Javascript/HTML5, iOS C++, C# XNA...). It's very good for small 2D Games.

166  Developer / Business / Re: How to get more people to see my game trailer? on: October 19, 2011, 04:08:57 PM
You can also try to post it to other video portals like veoh, vimeo.. I've uploaded my trailer on a lot of portals, here are some numbers for you:

sevenload.com - 207 views
dailymotion.com - 21 views

- 424 views (this one is embed in my website)
megavideo.com - 94 views
veoh.com - 19 views

Not many views, but if you add them up, better than nothing.

Is it hard to get on sites like rockpapershotgun.com or gametrailers.com ?

BTW: Your game looks awesome!

168  Developer / Business / Re: Balancing Indie Development with a Daily Job on: October 18, 2011, 02:47:50 PM
I'm working Monday - Wednesday at my main job. Yes, 3 days/week. It's enough to pay my bills. And I have a job that is fun (I'm working at a big developer/publisher of browser based games). The other days I work on my own games. I think this split is perfect for people who want to go indie.

I'm also feeling more motivated at my day job than before when I was working 40 hours / week, because besides working on my indie games I have also enough time for myself for sports, playing games, going to the cinema etc.

I found it very frustrating when I was working 5 days/week and doing some own stuff on the weekends or at night. This always worked a few days-weeks but then I was burned out and I stopped working on my own projects for serveral weeks. Later when I got back it often was hard to get into the flow again.

So if you have the possibility talk to your employer and ask if you can start working part-time. It's great!

What browsers are compatible with this game?

All browsers who support HTML5 Canvas Elements (Firefox, Chrome, Safari...).

I've also build a flash-version of the demogame (http://www.kongregate.com/games/JoeManaco/asteroidgame).

for some reason is was super slow in firefox on my (pretty good) computer
I guess the problem is that the canvas element is very slow on some browsers at the moment.
