Great game :D .

One suggestion (it's still the feedback topic): add keyboard shortcuts. For example, pressing 1 would select the upwards block, pressing 2 would select a downwards block, etc.

That's especially important for the editor as that's a bit tedious/time consuming for the moment.

Ah, I played this a while ago and like it a lot, but stopped after a game update (I was too lazy to download it Sad ). I'll give it another shot though Smiley .

To be honest, I got the same feeling as Craig Stern now.

I'll wait a bit to see wether any submission fo me gets through.

The fact that you can't submit games in open beta stadium is annoying as well...

Hi, I would like to suggest some great games.

For the database: all games from spiderwebsoftware. (the dev team of Jeff Vogel)

Giving my reasoning using a passage out of this article:
http://www.mobygames.com/featured_article/feature,31/section,220/
(I don't know mobygames very well, sorry if it's biased)

The indie RPG scene pretty much started with Jeff Vogel. In 1995 he released a first part in the series known as Exile. The sequel followed 10 months later and the final incarnations made their appearance in 1997. The Exile series throws you and your party of adventures into an underground prison and gives you a goal of survival and escape. Well, the first part does it. The later games follow the storyline when you have escaped from the prison and killed the emperor who threw you down there. Next, Jeff Vogel did Nethergate, which takes place in Britannia during the Roman times, and you and your party of Roman soldiers are off to fight various fantasy creatures while protecting your outpost. Or in the case when you play Celt... well you still fight with those fantasy creatures. Then Jeff Vogel decided to remake the Exile series so he could call it Avernum. The first three are direct remakes and the 4th and the 5th (released in Nov 12, 2007) continue the storyline. Aside from that he also created a series called Geneforge, which is a sci-fi meets fantasy kind of a thing. The only trouble with Jeff Vogel is that once you have played one of his games, you have pretty much played all of them. Playing one does not encourage to explore further, as they all look the same.

Okay, why so much about Jeff Vogel? Because he is the only independent RPG creator worthy of mentioning. Because most independent RPGs are either homages to the Final Fantasy series or... sigh... Dungeon Master clones or just Rogue-likes, while Jeff Vogel is combining the old-school party-based RPG with the choices and consequences design of Fallout.

Either way, I enjoyed the games as well and could review some of them.
Geneforce 5 is their newest game and could use a mention here Smiley .

Another indie game company that hasn't found any attention here is ankama games. So I would like to propose adding the games dofus, dofus arena and wakfu. I can review dofus arena and write articles about them, if needed/wanted.

I want to help. Already wrote about Teeworlds and there are a few games I could review as well. Especially the spiderwebsoftware games could use a bit of reviewing: only one is in the database (avernum 5) and it doesn't have any reviews.

Just one question: what is the true and only definition of an "indie game"? (before I review dofus arena or portal)

edit: or do I need to start a new thread with that question?

Browsed around the forums a bit more. Apparently, there's often a big fuss about new players "promoting" a game (something along the line of "a pimp doesn't sell his whores with his first psot), making me feel unconfortable with this review. Although I did introduce myself and it's just a review, it seemed a bit naieve of me to start out with something like this.

If this isn't used, I'd like to request a moderator to move this thread to the section "Indie Games" as that section seems more fit for this type of post.

Hi, I took a look at the youtube video's. (might try out the games themselves later, hadn't any time yet)

Question: do you think any of these games could be commercial, after some improvements?

The big problem I see here is that there is simply too much concurrention of big studio's in those genres. You have to consider that there are a lot of big (costly) titles in the racing/flying genre and I don't think your game has an edge above those.

While your productions look indeed extremely nice, getting money out of them (even if they're better then other paid indie games) might be hard.

In my eyes, indie games should focus on being really innovative and exploring new genres in order to concurrent with big titles (who don't dare using a radical concept). But as I said, I haven't really played your games yet, so maybe I'm jumping conclusions too fast.

Adding some open source titles:

Battle For Wesnoth
http://www.wesnoth.org/home

Teeworlds
http://www.teeworlds.com/

Also, all games from spiderwebsoftware
http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/geneforge5/index.html (newest game)

First 2 are free and the ones from spiderwebsoftware are certainly worth their price.
Most other great mac games I know have been mentioned before, so no need to repeat them.
29  Player / Games / Re: Your Top 10 Favorite Indie Games on: March 06, 2009, 02:01:49 PM
1 Dofus Arena (debatable wether this is indie)
2 Teeworlds
3 World of Goo
4 Wesnoth
5 Cave Story
6 Iji
7 Aquaria
8 Nethergate (first indie game I played)
9 Exit Fate
10 Fantasy wars (hard pick)

(edit, changed stuff around)

I know this game has been covered before (here: http://tigsource.com/articles/2008/06/27/teeworlds). Still, time has passed, the game had several major updates and I simply felt another review would be useful for the community.

/start review

I advise everybody to get the game now, that way it'll be installed before you finish this text. Don't worry, teeworlds is open source and works on all major operating systems.

The game can be found here: http://www.teeworlds.com/

Teeworlds is a fast-paced 2d sidescrolling multiplayer-only shooter played on a computer. The game features cartoon-themed graphics and physics, and relies heavily on classic shooter weaponry and gameplay. In the game, you roleplay a Tee, a cute ball who carries around various weaponry and a hook, allowing some Spiderman like movement. Overall, the gameplay is simply really fun. The pacing is extremely well done and the movement is pretty intuitive.

The gameplay of this independant game can, despite it's small size, compete with bigger and expensive productions in terms of fun and innovation. What sets Teeworld apart from other sidescrollers game is it's huge focus on mobility, it's innovative use of the grappling hook and it's weaponry. The instant respawn is also well implemented as it keeps you right in the action.

Now a bit of talk about the weaponry: you start the game with only a hammer and a long range pistol (and the hook), but there are other weapons lying around. On most maps they're everywhere so ammunition isn't too much of an issue. The weapons are varied and better players will learn to switch weapons quickly as they each have their own, very specific, situations. Sadly, there aren't a whole lot of weapons yet, but the ones that are implemented are simply perfect and offer different playstyles. I should mention that the next version will support more weapons and powerups.

Having weapons and clicking fast isn't everything in this game: due to the ammo being relatively slow and the liberty the grappling hook offers evading bullets can be done. In a fight between more experienced players, the Tees will usually move at a speed that makes hitting the opponent a matter of good timing and prediction. Sadly, it's pretty hard to find the better players.

One of the biggest goals of the Teeworlds crew is to make their game very casual friendly, or in other words, to attract casual gamers. According to my chronometer they did that pretty well: 15 seconds from launching the game to firing a gun (after picking a decent server). Compare that to the +20 seconds a cold launch of firefox takes (cold launch = first launch after the computer started) you can see why Teeworlds can concurrent with the casual friendly flash games.

One great part about the game hasn't been mentioned yet: the fact that there are tons of modded servers and extra gamemodes. Besides the "vanilla" gameplay in (team) deatmatch and capture the flag, you can play flagball, ninja-only, several game types that add RPG elements, instagib, freeze and the list goes on...
It keeps the gameplay varied and simply makes the game more addictive.

On the other hand, the gaming population is still pretty small (~700 online at any time) so you can't always find a server with the game mode you want. On a related note, there aren't a lot of servers on the American continent so people there should expect a higher ping (200 ms) if they can't get a server themselves. That shouldn't spoil the game though.

The graphics are well done and are easy for the eyes. Overall, they add to the fluidity of the game. The other hardware part, the sound effects are a bit dissapointing: there simply isn't any music. The sound effects are decent, but unless the map is crowded it doesn't really make up for the lack of background music.

While it can't concurrent with top games like TF2 and L4D (nor tries to), Teeworlds has it's place as a fast, fun game that is perfect for when you want to get some distraction in little time. Fans of the 2d sidescroller shooter genre should certainly try this game.

Although it's still in early development proces, it already deserves more attention and more players considering the quality of the game in this 0.5.1 version.

/end review

Hope I posted this in the right section and that you guys do apreciate user reviews (posting guidelines weren't very clair). To be honest, I posted this review on other sites as well, but as I'm still a bit frustrated by the lack of attention an open source title gets, I post it here as well. It's a bit long, but I did my best keeping it light and adding screenshots to break the wall of text.

Not sure about that whole "minimum number of posts to acces this forum" thingy...

Hi everybody :D .

Lately I've taken interest in the indie game industry, after playing fantastic games like cave story, iji, aquaria, exit fate, wesnoth, teeworlds and dofus arena (although the latter might not be considered an indie game).

Searching more great games like these above, I ended up here Smiley .
