I always liked just how Zelda implicitly incorporated different styles of music, like an appropriation of Ravel's Bolero ( ) or the New Wave Bossa Nova ( ). Incidentally, I heard an awesome Bossa Nova very nicely applied to Amanita's Machinarium the other day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRtCOJ6yrXw Generally, Bossa Nova's seem to be used as "elevator music" or maybe Brazilian style bar Jazz (unsurprisingly, since the Bossa Nova is a Brazilian style of Jazz) But in Machinarium I really liked how it was put in a different context or atmosphere, namely that of a robot bar I don't think i could think of any genre or type of music that hasn't been used to great effect in some game or other, but maybe that's just me...

I'm actually writing a soundtrack right now for a game called Qbeh-1: The Atlas Cube using only my own samples (things like guitar riffs/notes, toy instruments, kitchen appliances, basically anything i can find that makes interesting noises that i can record) and it seems to be working out for me. I wrote a blog post about it some time ago: http://liquidflower.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/sampled-instruments/I also uploaded a preview on soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/launchablesocks/iceworld I quite like working like this for now, and it gives me a sense of security that it's simply impossible that anyone else's music will sound like mine. Uniqueness is of course no guarantee for quality, but quality can't really always be guaranteed as a musician i reckon =)

Community / Townhall / Announcing Qbeh-1, an atmospheric puzzle/exploration game!

Hey all, We're proud to announce the release of Qbeh-1: The Atlas Cube on Steam in April! Qbeh-1 is an atmospheric puzzle/exploration game in which you pick up and use cubes to solve puzzles and progress through an abstract, floating world. It's the prequel to our first game, Qbeh which is available for free on Desura. The game will take the core concepts of the original Qbeh and vastly expand on it, using different types of cubes to create more complex and interesting puzzles. Watch the first teaser here: You can follow the project and get the latest updates from our facebook and the Qbeh-1 website.

Developer / Audio / Making a soundtrack using only custom samples
|

Hey everyone, I'm working on the soundtrack for a game called Qbeh-1, a prequel to Qbeh, an atmospheric puzzlegame which was released on Desura in 2012 ( http://www.desura.com/games/qbeh). Qbeh-1 is set for release on Steam somewhere in early 2014, and I'm working on finalizing the soundtrack. I've been making all of the music using only my own recorded samples. Some of these are instruments (like guitar, ukulele, and toy instruments I bought in different toystores and on marketplaces), and many of them are everyday objects like pens, teapots, radiators, wineglasses, icecubes, etcetera. There's even some of my own voice in there. It's been an interesting experiment so far, but I haven't been able to give it much of a testdrive yet. So i've decided to upload a song to Soundcloud to see what others might think, and maybe I'll be able to put up some more songs later as well. I'm very curious what others think, so please give it a listen and give me your thoughts! This particular song has been made for a snowy/icy level: https://soundcloud.com/launchablesocks/iceworldI've also written a small piece about using homemade samples for the music in this game on the devlog, which you can read here: http://liquidflower.wordpress.com/2013/10/17/sampled-instruments/cheers!

Developing for the Rift has certainly been interesting, in a good way of course! You'll see your own game in an entirely different light... we were quite surprised by how big the blocks looked! An overwhelming experience really = ) Right now we're actually working on a sequel to Qbeh, with full Rift support right off the bat. Going to be very interesting, at least from a developing standpoint ; )

Hey everyone! For the past few days we've been working on a Rift supported version of our first game "Qbeh". There might be some glitches here and there, but we're working on sorting those out as we go along. For the best playing experience we recommend using an Xbox360 controller. Controls can be found in the readme file. Trailer: Download: MEGA http://tinyurl.com/mnwxvyjI hope you'll like it! - Joost / Liquid Flower

Very relaxing and awesome, especially the background. I like it. Also 4amjam kinda reminds me of the soundtrack to Brick. What do you use to make your music, by the way? Thank you very much! I use Ableton live mostly, and for instruments i try to use my own samples as much as possible, mixed with sinewave-y instruments here and there. 4amjam is kindof an exception: i was just toying around with the "4am" instrument in live (hence the name; it was actually 2am when i made that). fun fact: i was watching Shutter Island when i made it =)
