As it's been said the game oozes charm. It's a pacman/zelda/gauntlet/space shooter bastard child, or something. The game is pretty easy as far as battling goes (maybe too easy), and the controls are fairly nice. I love the art style of it. Blocks can be cumbersome and get stuck in odd places screwing you over. I wasn't really sure on how to affect my status. I was always on coward, though I'm sure I was killing everything on sight. I can see lots of potential for level design. Keep it up.

Those elements are all there to make the world more believable. Since the world doesn't feel as fake you can immerse yourself into it with less effort. It's all in the small details, really. Things half of the players might not even notice, but subconsciously having those details around helps you become more attached to the world, even if you're not focusing on them.

There is a reason why so many of the first 3D games were crap. They just jumped on the novelty bandwagon. Megaman went back to 2D cause the 3D game was crap. Same with Castlevania.

What about various famous games being made into lo-tech roguelikes? Doom and Castlevania come to mind (DoomRL is awesome, by the way. And addictive as hell).

Two ancient warriors are brought to our time via inter-dimensional portal that breaks the time-space continuum into tomato sauce, are trained by monkey ninjas is the use of firearms and 167 forms of martial arts dealing with poo-throwing, and are minituarized by venusian aliens, who send them on a dangerous and epic mission to enter The Void, find Mother Brain, and destroy it from the inside.
I also predict cameos by Jackie Chan during a massive monkey war and Rinkuhero during the time-space portal scene, appearing in his new immortal path defender form.
I`d suggest copious use of pasta and styrofoam.

He's in Pathspace, shooting down alien ships headed for Earth and making pretty colors on the sky.

I have played Earthbound, and though I'll probably be linched and sodomized by the rest of the indies around here, I gave up on it after being stuck in an area I found really, really annoying and boring. I don't remember much about it, I think it was underground or something. When I think of getting this game again and trying to beat it, I think of that part, and the urge goes away.

I think you should have probably left out any HUD's and words, cause they basically already tell us a lot about the game concept. I already know it's a space themed game where you can battle with your ship, trade, level up in some way, communicate with other ships/races/whatever. It's probably much like Star Trek. So yeah, half of the figuring out fun is over in that one, for me.
