I feel like I should mention Cashmere Cat here, because those of you who grew up listening to and appreciating video game & anime music might dig some his stuff. Wonderful producer.

You guys might've actually heard his song "

" if you played GTA 5 at all.

2  Developer / Design / Re: How can first-person horror games be improved on? on: July 21, 2014, 08:47:17 AM
Trying to do something different I was attempting to make a 'horror' game that was inspired by House of Leaves that played with disorienting the player, unseen menace, and subverting the expectations most players have of mapping a space to control it. I didn't have the chops to pull it off so my game has morphed into just a straight dungeon crawler in a weird setting but I still think a House of Leaves inspired game could be very effective.

Oh, that would be fantastic. One of my all-time favorite books, and definitely the scariest thing I've ever read.

Death as a load screen annoyance doesn't feel very appropriate for 'horror'. I'd think it either needs to be incredibly impactful so something like a roguelike and the player genuinely fears and seeks to avoid it or it needs to be abandoned entirely and the game should make it part of the narrative.

I tend to think horror works best when it isn't paired with a lot of concrete mechanics with hp bars and such. It's too easy to become a resource management situation like most games which is why there isn't anything that affects the player besides jump scares.

I loved Amnesia, but one of the things I hated was, when a monster caught up to you... you died. Began the area over again. It made the whole experience a lot less tense.

Been hangin' around in the Destiny city. Random people decided to join Smiley

Enjoying the game, it's a mix of Borderlands and Halo.

How's the character customization in Destiny?

I always felt the whole yielding mechanic in FO3 and NV to be really poorly implemented, most everyone was just... always hostile once set off :-/

Yeah, I agree. Typically, when a gunfight goes down, I just end up going through with it because I know they probably won't accept my yield anyways.

But I tried, just that once, for those ghouls. Sad

Currently replaying Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. While NV is no doubt buggier, the level scaling really bothers me in FO3, not to mention some of the writing and voice acting. Three Dog has a hell of a personality, Liam Neeson is Liam Neeson, and, uh... yeah. Not much character going on, generally speaking.

But I had fun with the Tenpenny Tower quest this time around. I decided to roleplay pretty heavily, and my morally good character decided to go and try and work it out with ghoul Roy Phillips. After all, I wanted to eliminate tension between the ghouls and the bigots in Tenpenny Tower. I didn't want to kill the ghouls either... Roy Phillips was a bastard, I knew as much, but the other ghouls with him were good people dealt a bad hand.

That being said, I was aware of the in-game consequences of letting the ghouls in to Tenpenny Tower, because I had done it before. And, anyways, even if I didn't choose that option, it's not that hard to see that Roy is a monster.

So I killed him. Blew his brains out with a Combat Shotgun. I tried to yield to the other two ghouls, but they kept attacking me, and I had to do what I had to do. And I felt very bad about it.

When I went back to Tenpenny Tower, Gustavo paid me for the murder of the ghouls. There was no option to refuse the money. Unnerved by what I had done, as well as the callous attitude of Gustavo and his employer, I went up to see Tenpenny and killed him. Then I went down, killed Gustavo, and fled. Hit the road again, and that was that.

Not going along with the actual quest line and kind of forging my own path, my own narrative, actually made that part of the game a lot of fun. It allowed the experience to actually resonate with me, even if the game would not particularly recognize my decision. I probably had more fun doing that than anything else I had done in my replay up until then.

you MUST know Afro Samurai

Most definitely. Not only was that show incredibly entertaining, but RZA is one of my absolute favorite producers, especially all of the early Wu-Tang Clan stuff.

kagero deception series, there have been some newer ones released.

Yes, that's exactly it! Thank you.

EDIT: Actually, any clue if these are on the Playstation Network store? Would check, but I'm at work.

Anyone remember that game from PS1 where you were some asshole laying traps in a big haunted castle or mansion or some such? It was pretty spooky. I think it was Japanese made. I believe at the beginning you...kill the king, or your brother, or something, and then Satan comes along.

I could be completely off. This might not exist, but I'm almost certain that I watched my brother play this all of the time when I was a kid.

Necessary to gameplay or not, it seems like your vision for the game is to create something of a refutation against conservative stances and ideas that you don't agree with, so why not do it? If you want to make a point, then I'd say go ahead and stick the AK-47 in there.

Depression Quest, Dys4ia

Gonna second *Depression Quest*. I've also found Kitty Horrorshow's *Stygia* to be extremely evocative for me. As to why, I have no clue, but it resonated very strongly with me despite its fantastical setting.

*Edmund* was horrifying, but in a good way. Good is a weird word to use to describe that game, because it's... not really. Yet it sort of brought this awful thing that happens to people daily to life, very similar to *Irreversible*, except shorter and far less dizzy.
11  Player / Games / Re: Dark Souls and Dark Souls II on: July 17, 2014, 09:01:43 AM
Playing Demon's Souls now and wow, you really don't get a lot of souls in this game compared to Dark Souls. It's pretty hard to level up and buy equipment.

I played the original Demon's Souls a few years ago and found it difficult, but doable. After years of playing Dark Souls, however, going back just feels... masochistic. When it came out for free for PS+ subscribers, I downloaded it, played it again, and just couldn't do it. It felt far too frustrating this time. Guess Dark Souls really spoiled us.

Though I still haven't played a level quite like Tower of Latria. I'd say that I prefer DS 1 and 2 to Demon's Souls, but none of the areas or levels in those games have the level of atmosphere that Tower of Latria does.

Recently it's been a lot of Flying Lotus and hip-hop, but I really listen to anything. I do love when a soundtrack includes more urban musical influences, however, since it's not something you see too often. I love the orchestrated stuff, don't get me wrong, but there's something very unique about the mood, say, a house or hip-hop track can bring to a soundtrack.

Growing up, a lot of my interest was in hardcore, post-hardcore, some metalcore, and anything along those lines. Still listen to it every now and then, but not nearly as much. Hip-hop has been a constant in my musical development and interest, though.
13  Jobs / Collaborations / Re: Programmer looking for project on: July 17, 2014, 08:04:14 AM
Hey,

I consider myself mostly interested in writing, ideas re: design and storytelling, and I create music to boot. But I've never had the brain for programming. Maybe I would if I put more effort in, honest to God, but I'm also very head-in-the-clouds so whenever I've tried, it's been difficult. Concepts interest me. Actually writing code and putting the pieces together to make things work? Not exactly my forte. I very strongly respect those who can do it, though, because it's seems obscure, difficult, and sort of a dark art. (from my side of the fence, anyway)

You've probably got some PMs, but in the case you didn't, I've been trying to figure out how exactly to put together an RPG project that's been brewing in my head for a while. I'm not exactly looking to create anything amazingly complex or graphically impressive, because, while I don't have the head for programming, I know when some things are just going to be impossible to do, especially for a small project. I'd like to keep it mostly simple, very possibly text-based with music and some visuals to keep it aesthetically interesting. Tonally, it'd probably end up being quirky and a little strange but with gravity to it, maybe some darkness, because that's how the things I write tend to come out. If you're interested at all, shoot me a PM and I can tell you more about it.

All that being said, I can't pay, and this would be more for experience (on both our parts) and also to just put something really cool out there. If it turns out really cool and beyond our wildest dreams, I dunno, selling it is an option, but that's so far ahead in the future that I don't entertain the thought.

For the time being, I'm just interested in putting together something fun that maybe not many people have done, that I don't think would be too hard to put together either. So far, I have myself -- who can do design, music, and some writing -- and then another writer who can put together a lot of very good prose. I might be able to round up people to do art and the likes, but that's also something I wanna hold off on till I find a programmer.

Again, if any of this sounds interesting, I'd love to talk more about it, and you can shoot me a PM and we can get in touch. If not, I'm sorry for wasting your time, and I hope you find something! (And you might've, since I'm replying days late)

Thanks,

Marc

And there's some old game, um, Clocktower? I dunno.  I think it was on the PSX.  You're being chased by some little kid with a big knife and like, 5/6 of the endings are horribad.

Wasn't it a giant pair of scissors...?

And I'm gonna have to second Red Dead Redemption. The ending just pushed me to tears.

My biggest offender is the word "well". Not as in, "I am feeling well," but as in, "Well, okay," or "Well, let's do this!" or something like that.

Just by watching the gameplay videos, I already can't wait to play this...

Keep up the good work, and if you need music by any chance, let me know! I'd love to help compose for your game.

I'm really digging Crazy Race. It sounds like something straight out of one of those summer adventure flicks... Good job, my friend!

So let's cut to the chase: I love making music, I love games... I'm not gonna bore you all to death with some long background about who I am.

I just have to say I've been in bands here and there and I'm always working on a new tune.
