Well thanks but I tried reddit and this is the result: http://redd.it/jwet82 points and Im not even sure how many people have seen it, apparently youtube is not counting reddit views for some reason. Am I doing something wrong? I thought the video would be more interesting than a link to the webpage. Maybe I was wrong.

Developer / Business / Re: Do you consider Indies part of the Game Industry?

Of course I do. I think it all depends on your definition of "independent" for me, an independent developer is a profesional (as in gets paid for his work) developer or developer studio that is not owned by another company, as in is not a "part" of a larger company. therefore "Independent". Since is not owned by a larger company, this gives the studio much more freedom to experiment and create new ips, platforms and mechanics (sometimes it forces it a bit too in order to stand out) and that is why usually this is where more creative games come from. not only they are a part but a very important part of the industry.

Hmm.. well those are success histories, and are encouraging indeed. but I seriously doubt all games can be released that way, you need to get a lot of marketting for a game to even be noticed and on top of that trying to collect money for your unfinished work? unless the game is really original or ground breaking (like minecraft or overgrowth) it probably just wont work. I really dont see how this could work for an RPG with a thousand levels and you only have one to show so far. Also to be honest as a customer sometimes this is great (minecraft) but Im not so happy on all my purchases made that way, I have bought some alpha games that apparently are staying like that forever or havent had significant changes in ages.(cortex command Im looking at you but hoping Im wrong though) I think sometimes is better to have the first finished part of a complete series (that would be expanded later) than to have just a semifunctional part of a mega epic adventure. p.s. Also to be honest I never have considered minecraft as an uncomplete alpha game, it has always felt like a complete game all the time. A complete game that has been expanded through time.

Actually, knowing what I know now, I think you should consider self publishing at least for your first game, is extremely difficult to get a publisher without a previous portfolio, and the worst part is that publishers are sometimes not very direct about it. Which leads to very long times waiting for a "final decission". There are some services out there for self publishing like Desura, GamersGate, etc. maybe even Steam (although it is really difficult), it depends on your target platform. (iOS and Android are incredibly easy for self publishing) Once you have self published your game you can use it as your portfolio for your second game and so on. Obviously you wont have as many sales for your first game but hey everybody has to start somewhere.

Developer / Technical / Launcher with update check?
|
on: January 26, 2011, 11:36:17 AM

I was wondering what would be the best way to create a launcher program for a Windows game that checks for updates in a webpage/server? Something like what minecraft does?
Is there a tutorial or a tool to do that? Ive heard Nsis does that with the installation, but the thing would be to check each time the player launches the game.

Can you not use mochiads on c++ as well?
From mochiads support: Will Mochi Ads support non-Flash games or content in the future?
Currently Mochi Ads supports Flash 6 through Flash 10 with ActionScript 1, ActionScript 2, or ActionScript 3. Our technology is not compatible with any other platforms unless those platforms can host Flash content. We are always researching new technologies and trends, but at this time we are fully committed to supporting Flash.

Developer / Technical / Online Score board for a new game , suggestions?

We have a flash version of a game that uses mochiads for the scoreboard support and achievements, and we are pretty happy about the results, however we are working in a version of it that uses a C++ based 3d engine. And we would like to have something similar in it, What would be the way to handle the score boards from c++? are there tutorials or services for independent games that we could use?
hmm.. btw I mean the Secure Server part to store the scores and the achievements per user, not the GUI.
