1  Developer / Business / Re: Thoughts on Motivation and Teamwork on: November 12, 2013, 03:11:29 PM
"Motivation" is like "inspiration." There's no discounting its importance, but you can't wait on it. You have to be in the right place at the right time to be struck by it. That right time is daily and the right place is at your desk working.

Maintaining motivation is like maintaining inspiration is like maintaining lightning striking. I don't think it's possible. The only thing you can maintain is the discipline.

I used to schedule my work, which didn't work, and ultimately, nothing did. The problem was that there'd always be a SNAFU or bug that would derail the schedule and render it meaningless.

I've since created a system that works for me, YMMV. I've created a bunch of index cards with tasks to which I've assigned points. Everything is pro-rated in terms of what will yield a completed game (or similar goal). Points are typically assessed against a unit of time, usually 2 hrs. I use a timer to keep me honest. 10 pts. is a full-day's work.

This allows me to re-assess every 2 hours what needs to be done while occasionally mixing in things that won't bore me to tears.

Don't make visitors to your site have to deduce what you art style is piece by piece from a series of blog posts. Have a separate tab that's just for screenshots.

One of the failings of the Wacom tablets, IMO, is that they don't have enough buttons and the buttons they do have, are not ergonomicaly located. Furthermore, they are not sufficiently programmable. So I decided to rectify that. Here's a prototype board that I created to TOGGLE keys specifically for use w/ Zbrush, glued to the back of the board.

I'll be putting up a tutorial on how to wire/code this on my youtube channel, nickelcitypixels. Wondering if there might be enough interest in this to produce them as a shield (a board that simply plugs into) for Arduino. Should be able to get the price down to $10?

I'm recanting my support of justHost, they've changed mngmnt and have gone straight down the shitter.

The email link they sent me confirming cancellation of nickelcitypixels.com actually sent me to a form that cancelled mikejkelley.com. Mikejkelley.com is where I host my email. I'm currently expecting a job offer. This is bad.

Here's a link explaining. It would be great if you could bump the views.

Don't give me any grief about reviving an old thread, I don't need it. Web hosting recommendations are perennial. As indie devs we need to stick together on things like this.

"North Dakota passed a law in 1987 requiring out-of-state mail-order houses to collect and pay a use tax on goods purchased for use in the state. Quill Corporation refused to comply and the state of North Dakota took them to state court. The trial court ruled in Quill's favor and found that based on Supreme Court precedent in a 1969 case (National Bellas Hess, Inc. v. Department of Revenue of Ill.) the law created an unconstitutional burden on interstate commerce based on the Fourteenth Amendment's due process clause. In addition the Supreme Court found it conflicted with the commerce clause because, “The very purpose of the Commerce Clause was to ensure a national economy free from such unjustifiable local entanglements. Under the Constitution, this is a domain where Congress alone has the power of regulation and control.”

The upshot is that you typically have to charge and declare/pay sales tax if your customer resides in the same state you're doing business in. You don't have to charge out of state customers sales tax.

The law varies from state to state however and NY has tried to find a way around the Constitution by requiring any business w/ a physical presence in NYS to charge sales tax on customers from NYS. Predictably many online retailers have simply chosen to move out of state leaving NYS w/ no tax revenue (and less jobs) from those businesses. Stupid.

Machiavelli, a man so ruthless his name/nickname serves as euphemisms for Satan, advised the Prince not to tax trade routes. Not because he was a nice guy obviously, but because the net effect is that you wind up losing money in the long run. NYS, more ruthless than Machiavelli and not nearly as smart.

Obviously, your revenue will still be taxed at around 40% when all is said and done. Hope this helps somewhat, keep in mind I'm neither a lawyer nor an accountant, ymmv.

From what I understand of many several seconds worth of research, if they're using "Inquisition" to refer to an actual inquisition (ie they're not re-appropriating the word and giving it an entirely new and unique meaning), they can't register it as a TM. In a similar vein, if you're using inquisition to refer to an actual inquisition, you should be safe.

In any event, I don't think you'll have any problem using the name. But, IANAA.

Lol, do you not get satire? Or Colbert? His character isn't a fan of Obama, hence, having him fight "Obambies" is right on the money.

I've scaled back all the features that were too difficult to implement in my game DreamCasters' Duel. So now it's a comic book.
