Developer / Design / Re: So what are you working on?

Started working on a new project where you can switch between human and spirit forms. In spirit form you can possess objects and people to solve puzzles! This idea. I like this idea.

Community / Creative / Re: Why do you create games

Probably since I just like creating stuff.
Can probably trace it back to when me and my brother were younger playing with legos. We'd each make our own "levels" complete with objectives, NPCs (lego-people), and maybe even a final-boss thing. Then we'd each take turns visiting each-other's "level" (playing as another lego person) and go through it as if it were a typical video game.
Good times.

Community / Townhall / Stick Nodes - [Android] [Free] Stickfigure animation app!

Stick Nodes - A simple-yet-robust stickfigure animation program created with mobile devices in mind!Hey guys, just got around to releasing my latest Android app. To be perfectly honest, this probably isn't so much a "game" as much as it's just a fun way to spend some time - close enough, right? LinksGoogle Play: [Free] [Pro]More info: [Website] [Facebook] [Google+]The pro version has no startup ad and doesn't place a small watermark on exported animated .gifs, otherwise the two versions are identical.AboutYou can get a lot more information / screenshots from the official website or the Google Play listing pages, but here's some quick info. Stick Nodes is a simple-yet-robust animation program that allows you to create and animate stickfigures frame by frame (with optional built-in tweening) to produce an animated .gif you can share with others. Some of the features include: - Automatic frame-tweening turned on/off with the click of a button.
- Great variety in segment shape types allows for greater creativity.
- Color/scale on a per-segment basis - easily color your stickfigures.
- Ability to create, save, import, and share stickfigures you create.
- Compatibility with Pivot-created .stk files (version 2.2.7 and earlier).
- Pinch-to-zoom to make animating more convenient and simple.
- Forward and backward onion-skinning for precise animating.
- Clean, simple interface created with mobile devices in mind.
- More stuff I'm forgetting...
ExampleHere's a quick animation created by another user. ScreenshotsSome screenshots to give you an idea of what the app looks like. It's a load of fun especially for those with a creative imagination, would love to see some examples of what you guys come up with!

Just looking at your demo reel you have on that page, very impressive work. I'll be keeping you guys in mind when it comes to trailer-making time, definitely better than I can do in my lowly Windows Movie Maker setup, haha.

Community / Tutorials / Tutorial: Setting up Google Services with LibGDX
|
on: March 27, 2014, 01:54:35 PM

I wrote up a post on my development blog the other day about setting up Google Services (leaderboards, achievements, etc) for LibGDX games. I'm sure it also applies to standard Android games as well, you just may have to stray from the given path a bit. http://fortheloss.org/tutorial-set-up-google-services-with-libgdx/While I was developing my first app and trying to implement Google Services for the first time, I had a few tutorials I referenced since it seemed each filled in the gaps the others overlooked - I figured I'd write my own tutorial now to potentially fill some more gaps.

Developer / Technical / Re: Flash/ActionScript 3 Collision Detection

I'm not sure of your skill level, but for pixel-perfect and fast collision detection between convex shapes, the Separating Axis Theorem is highly recommended. If you've never implemented something like this it could be a bit daunting but it's not terribly difficult, plus there are lots of tutorials / examples in both AS3 and Java all over the internet.

I'm almost certain that if I got used to it, GraphicsGale would be the way to go, but I just prefer Photoshop too much.
The simple-to-use layers and blending effects, overlayed grid, simple animation frames, etc... Everything you need is there.

I find myself going into and out of week/month-long periods where I listen to a playlist of a bunch of retro video game soundtracks I have.
It's really good stuff - Sonic, Spyro, some lesser-known games like Combat Cars, etc...

Jobs / Portfolios / AS3/Java Web/Mobile Game Developer

on: March 26, 2014, 04:50:13 AM

Hi, my name is Ralph and I just figured I'd post my portfolio here on the off chance that work might find me. I'm primarily looking for full-time work in the NYC tri-state area. I'm fluent with Actionscript as well as Java and general web/Android game development. I'm also skilled in animation (with the Flash IDE) as well as general graphic design (Photoshop) as I've been both the programmer and artist for all of my games. My portfolio can be found here: http://rdamiano.comThanks!

Pretty fun, I can see it being better suited for mobile devices because of its simple and challenging nature but the Flash version is still great.
I'm ashamed in how long it took me to notice the instructions for double jump, though.

I've Google'd around and asked on Twitter but haven't had much luck, maybe someone here can offer some input.
Is there a source (list of some type perhaps?) of marketing/review blogs that post about Android games/apps?
I know about the "big" ones (indiegames.com, tigsource.com), but I'm looking for more achievable mid-level ones that I can get in touch with.
