I personally prefer TBS, combat in those games is generally more tactical, so you really how to think about how you attack the enemy beyond just gathering a huge force and steamrolling in their general direction.

If you don't want players to miss the fact that they're missing out on something, make sure that whateer you use to block the paths is something that will spark their curiosity, perhaps strange, silent beings that wordlessly guard the entrances?

-Look up "The Uncanny Valley", then exploit the crap out of it.
-If the player feels like they are always the most dangerous thing in the room, you've failed.  You need to make people feel hesitant to continue when they see/hear any warning signs of future battle.
-Creepy sound effects are EVERYTHING!
-Use the environment to show the player how dangerous their situation really is, hint towards the greater truth behind the scenario, but don't make it pretty.
-Don't use jump scares, they're a cheap trick and no one enjoys them.
-PACING! PACING! PACING!

There's something hilarious about seeing those ragdolls instantly switch from acrobatics doing crazy flips to just derping along the ground.

Looks good so far and the idea seems fairly fresh.
