Wow, I really dig the artwork already. Nice atmosphere!

What he said! Looking good!

Pff, progress, none. Real life stepped in yesterday and I haven't got anything done. To top it off, I have a problem with vs 2010 that I can't fix. When I select code it crashes. This is due to me not having uiautomation.dll, which I had to delete in order to get flight sim x and a addon working. Grrrrr. Back to vs 2008 and xna 3.1 Sad

Wow, thanks for the tip, that is indeed a bad conversion ratio! Good to know! Ah well, first getting this thing to work   Big Laff

Yeah the game still looks great, I was also thinking about developing it further for the marketplaces :D
Who knows, I might earn a buck haha.
But yes, I am writing in c# with XNA. But I am trying to keep the game logic pure c# and only the rendering/graphics/sound as XNA. Hopefully so it will easier to port (if it ever comes to that) to linux and other systems.

For now the plan is, 1 (small) premade map, 1 player, a couple of enemies. Hopefully this will allow me to get basic functionality quick. In my past projects I always aimed for the sky but never got from the bottom Wink

Hi guys and girls,

Been a while since I was last here. My last project never got done. This isn't a big surprise to me, my projects never get to final status. Anyway, kind of bored at the moment and haven't coded in about 8 months I think. So today/night (it's 6.32PM here right now) I'm going to try to develop a game. At least the basics and make it playable. Don't care about the graphics for now, I just want to finish a project for once in my life and I would like to do that this evening Smiley

I don't have a name yet, but it will be something in the line of the old MSX-game Rune Master. Since I no longer have that game and haven't played it in decades I'm sure it won't be the same, but the gameplay will be based on it.

For those that don't know, it was a sort of boardgame meets D&D system. Fun to play on a lonely evening.

For now this is what I have:

Code:
using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;

namespace aga
{
    class Map
    {

        private int _width; // width of the map
        private int _height; // height of the map
        private int[,] _map; // the map array

        // link all privates to public (hihi)
        public int Width
        {
            get { return _width; }
            set { _width = value; }
        }

        public int Height
        {
            get { return _heigt; }
            set { _height = value; }
        }

        public int[,] Map
        {
            get {return _map;}
            set { _map = value;}
        }

    }
}

And so the saga begins :D

That's it! Thank you  Big Laff That was fast lol, I was even editing it to clearify it :D Thanks a lot mate!
68  Developer / Technical / What is it called when animating sprites from several bodyparts insteadOfFrames on: September 08, 2011, 04:05:22 PM
Hi all,

Lately I came across an technique that let you make complex (and not so complex) animations from 1 bitmap that had several bodyparts in it, drawn next to eachother. Not like a tilemap, but instead of having drawing for each frame, you would take the bodyparts and in an xml file (xna) make animations by adjusting the way (rotation, x/y, size) of the several parts. I forgot how this is called and can't seem to find that site again. Does anyone happen to know this?

Cheer,

Thanks guys! That's pretty cool of you all. Been busy with other things but I'm going to start over, but this time a bit different. I'm not going to decide on the specific game yet, but fist I'm going to do what I wanted to do and should have done in the first place. Build a decent backsystem/editor for holding 2d worlds. An engine as you will. Just tailored for my own needs. I think I will open a devlog here for it. When I do so, I will pass the link here. First I have to make 1 decision though. Tile based or not. I always made tilebased 'engines' in the past, but now I'm thinking about an absolute engine. Who knows, might even contain a tiled-layer class. Not sure yet how it will look. Ah well! I will keep you posted. In the meantime I can also have a good thought about what I want my game really to be about. Lately I am not even sure if I should go for turnbased or realtime. I was never good at making up my mind and sticking to it Wink

Hehe, just got out of bed. The wine got me :D But today I will continue. I sort of feel I still have 12 hours. But first coffee, breakfast, shower!

I'll keep it in mind :D
Well it has been about 12 hours now. Since it's 3.23am here, I'm going to stop the clock now and get some sleep. Tomorrow I'll continue. With another 12 hours on the clock. But to be fair, I didn't use all the time. A well, I have some interesting updates for you tomorrow I think. I have added some extra color support. Greytints when a tile is not visible by a unit, and a nice color when it is. Not sure how it will work out with the game idea i have in mind (which has changed again). Gonna think about that right now while I enjoy a nice wine to relax a bit Smiley

Selecting tiles working.

Getting hard to concentrate. Also not completely sure how to turn it into a fun game.

Allthough I am having a sort of block right now. Think I just need to quit for a moment and read some about other indie games. Get some inspiration. As it is now, the gameidea has evolved from a civ-like more to a railroad-building/resources-shipping game. I think for now there will be a couple of resources and towns. The player will have to connect resources via rails to towns. Player will be given x number of turns. Objective is to make as much money as possible or ship as many as goods possible.

Game idea might evolve further. Into a FPS or something lol Tongue

And now I'm gonna take a good shower, trade some money for beer and have something to eat. See you all in an hour or 2.

Whehe, thank you  Gentleman
And we have our first resource, *admittedly ugly* forests!
This also means I have a base framework for resources. Although for now resources are just textures with no functionality.

There are different tiles now, also included but not on the picture, beach-tiles.
A savebutton, that doesn't has functionality yet. And the map that is dynamic generated but within strict rules. This mapgenerator (multiple generators are possible) takes the 2 tiles on every edge and makes them into water. Then does a simple 50% random.next on every third tile from the edge and then @random choses if it will be land or water. I plan on making the tiles that edge to the water beach tiles. But first I want to think a bit about the scale of the map. Input is always welcome.

Thank you! Or, dank je Tongue
Yeah, I know how it goes... so many ideas, and they all look so easy to implement Tongue
Ah well... I worked some more on the game and now it has decent error logging, a camerasystem, and everything is dynamic. Now I've started working on a buttonclass so I can make a savebutton for the game Wink
