First-half can be played online, second-half you need to download it and pay 3$.

And it's awesome.

Good read.

On the second page he's got a good point. "Don't get around – BE around" he says. I'm in the exact same position right now. I made a game and I'm trying to get the word out but I've never been involved in any online community so I'm basically a stranger for everyone.

So here's a few objectives I got to help me out.

- Become more active in online communities and submit the game for feedback in forums.
- Make a pretty website, mine is way to basic and doesn't look professional at all.
- Start a dev blog with RSS feed so people can follow me and stay up to date.
- Make a trailer on youtube and gametrailers(any other?) to increase my visibility.
- Make a banner ad and start an advertising campaign with the money(pennies) I get from advertising on my website.
- Participate in contest.
- Send emails to game journalist to review my game.
- Build a mailing list.

(Edit) I forgot:
- Submit the game to Silverlight showcase websites.
- Submit the game to online portals.

I'm probably missing a few more.

I got two big challenges. English isn't my primary language and I make many mistakes. Silverlight isn't as wide spread as flash and many game portal don't support it.

Using the font "software" to create an image(.bmp, .png, etc.) and then using the image inside your game is ok as long as you don't create an image for every letter and use these images as a way to bypass the distribution license.

Doesn't that go against the whole point of using a font?  If I can't use all the letters, why buy it?

What I meant is,

let's say I have a chat in my game and I want to use the font to display the texts, then I'll need a distribution license. I'm not allowed to make a picture of every single character and map my players input with it.

Sorry for the confusion.

Larabie fonts (at least in my experience) seems to be pretty friendly toward small independent game developers. You might want to email Ray and see if he'd be amenable to working out some sort of small deal with you.

I didn't know I could ask Ray directly, last time I checked I was directed to the person in charge of the licensing. We haven't talked about the price of the license since I was mostly curious about using pictures of the font to avoid the need of a distribution license. Maybe he had a good deal in store for me, I'll have to give it a try.

Thanks for the tips.

From my experience with http://www.larabiefonts.com/ this is what I understand:

A .ttf file is considered a software. If you want to use the software inside your own you need a distribution license. I don't believe the fact that it's easy or not to extract the "software" (.ttf file) matters.

Using the font "software" to create an image(.bmp, .png, etc.) and then using the image inside your game is ok as long as you don't create an image for every letter and use these images as a way to bypass the distribution license.

So in my game, every time I want to use the font I need to make an image of the word. It's far from optimum and I would gladly pay for a distribution license if I had the ressources.

That said, your best bet is to directly ask them.

Hi TIGers  Gentleman,

my name is David and I'm an independant game developer (finally I can say it Beer!). I've been interest in making video game forever, but never got the drive to complete any. Like they say, I could talk the talk but not walk the walk Embarrassed.

But recently it changed, I got serious again and for real this time. Enough of blabling about how it would be awesome to make game. Enough of cool prediction on how I'm so gonna rock the world with my stuff  Droop. Let's just do it already and see what happens next Cool.

I've been working hard at this for the last 3 months. I learned C#, Silverlight, how to use the great physic engine Box2DX. My plan was to participate in the www.mashooo.com contest. Having a deadline really helped me stay focused Tired.

So my game is called Wheelz, it's a platformer where you must drive your little buggy through the landscape to reach the end. The feedback I got so far are very polarized. Some people find it too hard and give up after a few minutes Screamy while others feels challenged and thinks it's a great game  Tears of Joy. The difficulty lies primarily in the controls, it's very sensible and you'll end up often upside down. But once you get the hang of it, I believe it's a satisfying experience.

So that's pretty much it for now, I'm glad to be part of this community and I'll see you all around soon on the forum  Smiley.
