I agree with brett, though this topic should be talked about, this article is not a good point to start the discussion on.
' Apart from that there’s a pitch video featuring some boring guy talking with a very annoying manner that makes me sick. After the most awkward beginning EVER with him and some random girl trying to be casual and funny, I quickly fast-forwarded video hoping that I’ll find some actual gameplay. '
Does this article really focus on the fact that retro games are selling to the writers disgust, or is it something the writer has taken a 'quick glance' at and has immediately shot it down on being another retro graphic piece which doesn't deserve the money it gets.
There are many reasons people would make retro graphic games, for instance they're (arguably) easier to create (at least for someone with limited resources like a graphics tablet), they take up less memory, but most importantly for most devs who chose to use these graphics, they're reminiscent of the games they grew up making, which they want to have others remember. Nostalgia is pretty strong!
On top of this, there are some forms of art which mostly consist of canvases painted a single colour with a few lines on them (probably an exaggeration of the art form as a whole but these pieces exist in large numbers). This doesn't make it art, and the fact that some of these pieces sell for considerable amounts of money doesn't mean that there's something wrong with it.
The writer of the article seems to blame the dev for making a piece of 'crap'. If the market wants to buy it then the market wants to buy it, and you shouldn't rage at this.
Ignoring the article, it may be true that retro graphic style games are receiving more money than other games based on the art, without any consideration towards content. But it's not that common. Games like Super Time Force are readily awaited, and though it has retro graphics, in no way has the content been ignored, nor has the development team held back content in its advertising.
I don't want to try to wrap up the whole debate, because there'll always be people who disagree (for instance the author of that article), but there's my opinion.
