Thanks a lot for the replies!

Ok, so Javascript it is, and I've gone a few sites to explore to work this out.

Thanks again for all the help! I just hope this isn't too hard to pick up.

Ok, so a lot of votes for javascript. I didn't even think it was even a "proper" coding language, but I'll certainly give it a shot!

is there anywhere that has tutorials for total newcomers to javascript?
I found this off the top, but it seems short for what I'd expect. does anyone know of any better tutorials before I charge ahead? I don't want to be invested in a tutorial that then throws me off midway, like the last two attempts I've taken that assume you know some coding.

Also, I know it has been asked before, but I wanted to post because near-all assume you know a certain amount of coding. I wanted to define that I am a total idiot when it comes to coding, and would like something that is fluid on platforms, while also having a tutorial for people a rung lower than dummies. ^^;

Hi all.

I am a complete newcomer to coding. I have little to no knowledge of any coding, aside from HTML/CSS.
I am a pixel artist in nature, and have not touched programming whatsoever. it seems far too confusing to me, and the tutorials, rather than explain exactly what you're typing, tell you to "not worry about it - this is just a thing you're meant to do".

After countless coders I've tried to get to work with me to make games, I've decided that I have to learn a programming language. it may take years, as coding is almost an entirely different mindset.

So, I'd like to ask two things.

First, what code is best cross-platform-wise? which is easiest to learn?

Second, Where could I learn this language from scratch? not just from scratch "with some knowledge", but completely 100% from scratch?

Thanks in advance for any replies!
4  Jobs / Offering Paid Work / Java Coder for a startup indie group - filled on: February 17, 2012, 08:07:22 AM
This position has been filled!
Hiya!

First time to this forum (directed here from another gaming forum), so, if I'm doing something wrong, please don't hesitate to tell me! ^^

I'm trying to start up an indie game group. I've tried to do so for 3 months, but our current coder is doing courses, freelance etc, so I effectively have no coder, the most vital part of a game. as sad as it is, all those three months produced was a main menu, and a map viewer. I value coders above most other professions, but 3 months for that, it simply won't work.

We're working on our first, hopefully launching game "Ascent". A 2D birds-eye puzzle game, where you need to direct a robot through a mine by placing arrows on the environment, avoiding obstacles. The game is set in a sci-fi/horror genre, and all visuals/music are intended to look/sound old, but match the game well.

For screenshots, we have a small public gallery here

We're using Tiled, so, we're using the TMX map format.

We have everything sorted for other positions, we just need a coder!

I create the art and maps, as well as generally trying to sort out the mechanics, features etc, which I'll discuss with the coder naturally.
for music, The hamster Alliance (once he sees a working game) has said he will throw some music our way.
Distribution-wise, I know the Desura people, and want to see if I could get Ascent onto their platform. I also would hope we could go into Mobile devices, but I'd rather start PC, then expand from there-on.
I did say we have another coder, who is very good at coding. but their activity would not affect this position.

As for being paid, I can't offer a salary. but, I plan to split the money from sold games between the group fairly.

and, after countless revisions/tweaks, that's about all I can think to say. if there are any questions, please feel free to reply/contact me! ^^
