Developer / Business / Business Model : the cost of a Life

Hey all It have been a long time i haven't posted here
I was thinking of a business model for online game (mostly online ) It's simple , it's kinda very close to the Arcades games room
You have the game for free , ENTIRELY and EVERYTHING but each time you die you have to pay real money to Ressuscitate and play again. So for example , each lives will cost you 1 euros ? or 1 dollars. So skilled player will play it mostly free.
So to repeat again : You enter the game , you create your avatar and have access to everything , but if you die , you'll have to pay the resurrection of your beloved character.
This system already have been established? It worked well ? What do you think of it ? Will you get into this ? Do you prefer this kind of model or the most classic one ?

those comments in that image you provided aren't really unwarranted. your game does look like minecraft and the gameplay does resemble edge. I down-voted your game too, it looks unimaginative and generic. hardly steam quality. I wouldn't play it if you paid me. while the comments are a bit harsh, that doesn't make them wrong. and I don't think anyone is abusing it by posting how they feel. they see wyv and keep and it looks a whole like spelunky, so they immediately make that connection and comment and vote accordingly. that's not their fault, it's the developers fault for making a game that literally looks like a spelunky clone. you say don't judge on graphics, but that's terrible thinking. if you are trying to sell and market a game, graphics and art style really do matter. I don't want to buy a game that looks like you literally just downloaded a minecraft texture pack. edit: the top rated comment is spot on as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/z4ult/rgaming_can_we_have_a_word_on_greenlight/c61hw54 In fact, I think some greedy devs are abusing the system more than steam users are. Most of the games submitted look like garbage and I really don't want Steam to turn into something like the App store. This is totally true but tell me allen : You never bought a game based on graphics and then was crushed down by the awful gameplay ? I mean , some beautiful games can hide a awful gameplay and some awful or basic games can hide a gem in term of fun and playing sessions. To me , the gameplay is just the core of the game , the art comes after and then finally the story (as a bonus) After that it depends , the story can comes close to the first point if it's a game like silent hill or Myst ? But most of the times , the gameplay should be taken over the graphics according to my opinion. I could bare ff13 because of this , and DQ 9 is a gem in comparaison.

Hey ! Long time i've been there What is star launcher ? It's a little , very little game i made some month ago I recently uploaded the game in newsground http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/602168It's a clone of one of the mini games from star and light 1.0 http://k-hermann.deviantart.com/art/Star-And-Light-1-0-314316696?q=gallery%3Ak-hermann%2F7734489&qo=25That game is flawed , so be careful , i hope one day make a better version. The concept is hard to explain since my english is limited The ball will fall , you have to launch a paddle to catch it and make points You can launch paddle from left or right and as much as you want , the game finishes when the ball touch the pitt! You have three paddles Please begin with the most long one , don't try the middle or the little , it's way too hard apparently. It seems my game have difficulty issues. Thanks very much for trying it Ps Don't spam the button left or right to launch the paddles , it won't work Wait actually the right time please. Spamming is punished

I was meaning strong inspiration instead , sorry.
There's a big difference between being inspired and ripping off. Besides, everything takes inspiration from something else. By that rationale there is only PONG.Yeah i exaggerated a bit with my last phrase But i'm always a bit confused by seeing some indies games being so successful

What? Aquaria was not made by people who worked in the big industry companies, nor was MineCraft or World of Goo... I was meaning strong inspiration instead , sorry.

I don't feel that way. I tend to start a game project only if I see that it is interesting enough that I have a hard time understanding all the interesting possibilities it can expose.
But I never try to make a game that looks like something someone else could make. Not worth my time.
I agree totally Unfortunetly that formula doesnt guarantee you the success , in fact most of the time your game could be categorized as "weird" or "obscure stuff" That's explain why the most successful indies game have strong connections with successful company games (retro or not)

I just wish people would put more love into their games before throwing them on Greenlight or XBLIG or whatever.
I think the question that people should ask themselves is: "If I had nothing better to do, would I prefer to play the game I made, or <insert favored game here>". It's actually very surprising how many indie devs I've met who would prefer to play TF2 or Tribes or Skyrim rather than a game that they personally made, and what surprises me even more is that they don't interpret that as a red flag that maybe their games could use a bit more work. Sure, not all the games you make need to stand up against what can be considered as the "standard of quality" that most modern games have, but when you try to put one of those sub-par games on steam and expect them to sell, that's where the problem is. Maybe I just suck incredibly badly, but I've never been able to "enjoy" the games I make, not in the same way that I enjoyed D2 for the first time, for example. All I ever see are flaws in my own games and they end up shattering the illusion. I just kind of assumed it was the same for everyone. Kinda the same Mostly because i know all the story and all the tricks so the game is boring The best part are mostly the random parts. Other than that i can't totally enjoy my own game as a Valkyrie profile game.

Ho , j'avais pas vu ce message , bon tu comprendra quand tu lira ma reponse en mp^^
thanks dude
1 yeah i heard that from another player I'll keep that on note , thanks !
2 how did you get the game ? because you can get the swf alone by clicking save as on the rectangle download stuff That kind of site have several weird link , i dont understand why they do that Normally , there is no installation , if you have flash, you get the file and you play directly.
3 Not really my first game , my second , my first was a little demo game with a hero wich was able to go through the walls.
4 You means tiles design ? Some room are symetrical while some other are not I was thinking that a old temple should have weird organisation in the background , not always symetrical , so i tried to modify a bit if it's something else , i dont get exactly.
5 thanks!
6 It's the visual signature of the heroine , she is not really human in fact We can say that she come from the stars in the sky... The idea was to animate a falling star move ! It was pretty cool in the rend , so i kept it.
7 What you call blue ground ? The purpose of the game is to light up the platform in order to progress If you jump twice on the same platform you die I had hard time to explain because it's not a common way of video game. The purpose can be modified through the game , so if there is a card with info , read it !
8 Cool !
Thanks !
I can explain for the Massive HUD , for me it was too much but apparently it was wrong I did this because i was thinking the player would never use Pause to check the items , so placing all items at the time was a good idea Now that explain why people use menus, sorry for that.

I have a very low level in true programming , meaning i'm far from guys like you , too far.
edit by the way your art is crazy good. My next big game could be a game like your sig , with a character and dialogues and stuff. I wanted to post in your thread but i saw a warning (120 days etc) so i prefer told you here.
