Hi I made Anodyne! It's def. not open world, it's more of 'linear with some wiggle room', I guess it's sort of between link's awakening and link between worlds in terms of freedom.
But at various parts of the game, you have choice for which place you want to go to next and you can wander between places at your will.
Pacing in the overall narrative is done via cards... which you have to find in dungeons and overworld, which can be tedious at times. There's an Interesting Thing I won't spoil that adds a layer to exploration.
Weirdly enough I do not see many similar games, though Anodyne came out 3 years ago. if you have more detailed ?s i'm happy to answer, I can spew tons of horrible maybe boring detail and theory ideas about anodyne lol
(it's pretty cheap now so you could grab it at Steam right now!)

We are making an adventure platformer now, called Even the Ocean (has a devlog here too
http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=32220 ) . It's similar to Anodyne in that you often have choices which part of the game you want to go to next, except it's a bit more restricted. There's no collection of items, though, and exploration is not a focus in the design. It's more going between these 'levels' (sort of like levels in mario 64, in that there's a big theme and stuff...), but the levels are tied into the main storyline and stuff, and the 'levels' have npcs to talk to, etc.
Definitely not open world, it's very much a story-led game with half of it being interesting/accessible platforming, but (to be perfectly honest) it'll be one of the more untraditional/innovative/Good platformers of the year, so if you're into 2D platformers you should check it out. It'll be out September? Or so.

As for my other recommendations...
- treasure hunter man - i played this a long time ago and it stuck with me. kind of haunting atmosphere, somehow. it might be like anodyne in that the world is 'open' but you have to conquer levels in a particular order.
http://www.origamihero.com/ori6/games.php looks like the dev still makes other games of a similar vein, i've heard ' a game with a kitty' is good too.
- crystal towers 2 - whoa i remembered this! i played this in 2011.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/340250/ . It has contained levels, but an open-world-ish hub to go between them. tons of objectives/collectibles. for some reason i was compelled to 100% it at the time (I don't do that with very many games anymore...)
- I looked through my notes, I did play
http://store.steampowered.com/app/246680/ secrets of raetikon...I don't remember precisely but I think it was open world and had collectibles? I found it a bit scrappy and hard to play, tbh, but could be good. And is on sale now (yay steam)
- Glum BUster -
http://cosmind.powweb.com/blog/?page_id=35 . don't really remember how it plays, but a lot of people like it and it's not talked about much and i think it's weird and open-worldy. check out some vids.
- An untitled story -
http://www.mattmakesgames.com/ i liked it when i played it, though i'm pretty sure it's a metroidvania. but it's a pretty quiet narrative and has some surreal juxtaposed spaces/levels, lots of hidden collectibles
- Knytt Underground
- maple story (lol) is a horrible MMORPG with an open 2D world. i played it a lot as a kid and the world stuck with me. interesting and worth trying out, perhaps. (I would play this old private server version
https://mapleroyals.com/?page=index )
