Rare sucked when they were at Nintendo, with occasional lapses into decent. They sucked harder under MS, until they put out Nuts and Bolts and Viva Pinata which were at least interesting and visually striking. Then MS scuttled them because those games sold like crap.
Yeah, I got 505s like crazy. Sent some money into the internet via paypal and got more 505s, but it's ok cos the game is in my account. Now I'm all downloaded and ready to play. Also got that God of the Forest game because that looked rad also.
No, normal fans are the worst. I get how insane people can be insane, and I have accordingly low expectations. As long as they're not hurting anybody, I'm not going to antagonise them or whatever - and I frown on people who make a special effort to do so. This goes for all kinds of crazies: chemtrail types, gangstalker paranoia types, hoarders, cat ladies, fitness goons, MRAs, furries, randroids, console warriors etc. etc. etc. I have a pretty high threshold these days as exposure has put a nice thick callus over my my brain. But I don't get how any rational, reasonably intelligent adult can find that show anything more than 'surprisingly good for a toy commercial, but I guess that's not saying very much'. I watched a bit before brony was even a word to see what the fuss was about and it's just an above-average cartoon for kids.
also la mulana has kinda lost its status as a "major indie game" (i think) but i don't care. this is a day 1 purchase.
That glow fades from everything eventually - does any much-hyped indie game still have a lot of cred once it gets some exposure? But in times when the Souls games are getting a lot of praise for their difficulty and obscurity, La Mulana still has an audience.
The industry needs to grow up and accept the sexual nature of human beings. I'm really looking forward to the first non-porn game to come out that has hardcore fucking in it, especially as a gameplay aspect.
I generally didn't care about score while playing YI (I think I tried it for the first time around early 2010 or so), my post is essentially based on the experience you'd have when playing through both games from start to finish without caring about more "extraneous" things like score systems.
You haven't really beaten Yoshi's Island if you haven't 100%ed it. Most games I wouldn't insist upon that, but too much of its best gameplay is designed around the 100%, and the unlocks are non-trivial (ie. extra levels). It's also asinine to complain about Yoshi's Island being a collectathon if you didn't collect stuff (not conceding it's a collectathon, mind - the collectables act as shot targets as much as anything, and all of them have a secondary purpose). Also, it's weird as shit to see somebody who makes a point of posturing over the 'god mode' of the ring/timer system in S&K/YI (which is an asinine, arbitrary criticism conveying a shallow understanding of the gameplay systems in those games and gameplay design in general) put S3&K over YI or any other of the games on that list of 16-bit sidescollers you made - it's the easiest game on that list, and not by a small margin. Finally, in reference to your comment about playing S3&K being more interesting to speed run than YI is to 100% (something you admit never having done) it goes without saying that you can play YI for speed too. That video I linked to earlier is a 100% speed run. I urge you to watch it. If you like, I can explain to you what's happening.
In all seriousness though, I can think of more SNES exclusives I'd want to play over Genesis exclusives. Things like Wild Arms, Ganpuru, Donkey Kong Country, Dragon Quest III, Rockman & Forte, Earthbound the list goes on. With Genesis all I ever play is Sonic, Comix Zone, Pulseman, Gunstar Heroes and Beyond Oasis.
With that said, I'm learning about a bunch of Genesis games I'd never heard of before, such as Langrisser II, but I think the SNES will always take the cake for me.
They're both great. Everyone I ever met who had a clear preference for one over the other always seemed to have big gaps in their knowledge about the other system, resorting to pat summaries/stereotypes to fill them up. PC Engine is pretty great too. And Amiga!
Fake "retro" graphics are pretty bad, but there are other styles that are even worse like Meat Boy's style
Honestly between the art styles of Super Meat Boy and "minimalist" 6x6 pixel characters scaled up 8x (or, if you want, Seiklus) I'd probably take the former any day. Both styles don't look very good, but at least the former has a bit more effort put into environment designs (even if characters are awful.)
Also, I think I've said this before somewhere but re: Henk Nieborg it should be regarded as a crime against art that he's essentially been sentenced to work on handheld/phone shovelware or average-at-best WayForward games for the rest of his career.
EDIT: Also, In the Hunt. One of the prettiest looking 2D games I've seen but no one ever mentions it.
In the Hunt has amazing visuals, but the game really sucks ass, unfortunately - hopefully that's why nobody mentions it.
