Started animating the movement of the player.  I wanted to show it in this devlog so I figured out that you need to make a GIF file.  It took a long time because I needed to change my sprite sheet into a bunch of seperate images.  Does anyone know a program that turns a sprite sheet straight into a GIF file.  Hows the animation?

Well yeah show me more!
Sorry don't have much else to shot at the point, but...

...more concept art.
(This is just art the game will not look like this)

Hi everyone, I'm starting a new project called Fluunix.  Gameplay will be mix between the copter game and platforming, a bit like an underwater level in most platforming games, but also different. There will also be survival elements too. Links to demos and videos are down below.  Please remind me to update this first post as this devlog progresses.

You can play the game on my sponsors site here:
http://www.247gamesonline.com/free-online-adventure-games/2517/fluunix.html?play=1

You can watch the gameplay trailer here:

What I've Accomplished.
  • Started on art
  • Player animation
  • Basic engine
  • Tiles work
  • done with level design
  • Plenty of enemies
  • Music and Sounds

What's Next?
  • Nothing

I think the gameplay could be improved by having more enemies or even variations of current ones that have horizontal movement because at the moment everything seems to move very vertically.

There are some enemies that sort of move horizontally, but they are difficult and later in the game, I may add some easier ones earlier on.  Thanks for the feedback.
325  Developer / Playtesting / ShootDodgeCry Gameplay Test on: June 20, 2012, 05:13:12 PM
This is just the gameplay for one of my latest games that I made while learning AS3.  This is a work in progress, so menus and music will be added later.  It is a vertical shooter, but it is very short and simple because I am making a bunch of smaller projects while learning.  I figured that I could get some feedback while doing the music and menus.  Any feedback or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  The white box at the side will be fixed, don't work.

Will there only be one world, with a ship to fly around it, or will it be multiple worlds that you fly in between with a space ship?  Just asking because I saw a ship inventory somewhere in this devlog.

328  Developer / Art / Re: How Does My Game Look? on: June 19, 2012, 12:00:02 PM
I added in some more suggestions:
   -less bright stars
   -more asteroidy asteroids

How does it look?
Which screenshot looks the best?
329  Developer / Art / Re: How Does My Game Look? on: June 18, 2012, 04:08:41 PM
Thanks for all the feedback so quickly.

So here is what I changed so far:                                  (look back at top to see)
-Change UFO's to be the same perspective.
-Background change to something more space like.
   -Change hearts to mini ships.

Anything else?

I am making a new game, with pixel style graphics again, because that is the only way I can make it look nice, but I find it doesn't really look that nice.  Anyone have any tips to make it look better, or does it look fine?  If you need more screenshots just ask.  Background is suppose to be a black hole, because a lot of people were wondering, does it fit?

How does this new one look?  I added in some of your suggestions.

Added some more suggestions.
331  Developer / Business / Re: HTML5 Earnings - Part One on: June 18, 2012, 02:56:17 PM
I'd say it's absolutely solely because they are HTML5. If all of my HTML5 games were made in Flash, they would be lucky to make $100 combined.
Why do HTML5 games make more money?  I can't really see any reason why...
332  Developer / Art / Re: 2D terrain lighting on: June 16, 2012, 01:41:16 PM
I actually really liked the one where you added noise even though you said it was ugly, it looked really good.  I liked the way it broke up the transition lines but kept the blocky look.  However my opinion on this isn't the best because I super overuse noise in almost everything.

I might also suggest to make it go to pure black in the middle, which would really help with hiding underground caves and ores.

Looks nice, I like it.
334  Community / Townhall / Super Pixel Man Void on: June 10, 2012, 10:38:49 AM
Super Pixel Man Void is another game in the pixel man series.  It has difficult arcade style gameplay and simple, pixilated graphics.  It is simpler and shorter than the others, but has lots of new gameplay elements.  It also is much smoother playing at double the framerate.  This time, you don't even have to download it, play it in browser at http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/597037.  Hope you enjoy it.

335  Developer / Technical / Re: Moving on from GameMaker on: June 05, 2012, 12:57:33 PM
Oh forgot to tell you all what I decided to go with, Flash (Sorry Dacke, I know that you seem not to like flash), and I will use FlashPunk.  I chose flash because of the in browser play, which I've always wanted to do, and I think it is for all platforms, and it is still possible to make it a .exe file somehow.  I also don't want to learn Java and C++ yet, because at the moment I am content with 2D games, I'll probably learn Java if I ever want to make a 3D one. Thanks to Chevy Ray for answering my questions about FlashPunk.
336  Developer / Technical / Re: Moving on from GameMaker on: June 04, 2012, 11:15:48 AM
Why would you use a book to learn it? I'm a professional Java programmer (Tongue) and I have never read a Java book in my life.

Wouldn't know, I'm not a professional Java programmer, it's just some advice I've been getting.
337  Developer / Technical / Re: Moving on from GameMaker on: June 02, 2012, 06:09:40 PM
If I learned AS3, is it similar AS3 to C#, C++ or Java?
338  Developer / Technical / Re: Moving on from GameMaker on: June 02, 2012, 11:09:08 AM
Thanks for everyone's advice with this!  Its been really helpful, and I'll summarize what I've learned, so correct me if I'm wrong:

-Flash = Great for fast 2D games but lacks a bit of power. Use Flixel or
                   FlashPunk. AS3

-XNA = Good tool all around, and can do both 2D and 3D.  Also very easy to publish
to Xbox and some mobile devices. C#

-Java = Learn if you really want to, and if you do use a book. Use lwjgl.  Java

-C++ = Same as Java, learn if you really want to, and use a book. C++

339  Developer / Technical / Re: Moving on from GameMaker on: June 01, 2012, 11:39:04 AM
Yeah, I agree with ChevyRay, defiantly learn C# and XNA, it's really great, easy to use and you can easily go from 2D to 3D. Al tough, if you really hate Microsoft you could learn Java which is a just as good (or better) then C# (and is multiplatform), you could do 2D graphics with slick2d, and 3D with lwjgl. A great IDE for Java would be either eclipse or IntelliJ.

I've looked at Java a bit, and am interested, but was scared because I thought it was one of the tougher languages.  Is it really that difficult?  Oh and is lwjgl 3D only or can you also do 2D games too?
340  Developer / Technical / Re: Moving on from GameMaker on: May 31, 2012, 03:28:08 PM
You can develop in Flash using completely free tools.

Thanks, never would have guessed that.
