Well it all depends on execution doesn't it? In theory I think it sounds like a nice idea to keep the player, enemies, pickups and other interactable objects as pixel art and the rest as CG painted stuff. From a productivity standpoint though I'd stick with whatever I can create the fastest..

Something silly I was fiddling around with a while back, a PC98-style dating simulator/post-apocalyptic fighting RPG... Pay close attention to the fearsome and invisible atomic zombie. Hm, maybe I should finish this.
