Yeah, the fact that you havent encountered good games written in Pygame is no indication of its viability for game programming. There are various reasons that it might not have gained too many followers or big name games. I dont think its a lack of ability of the language though, Python is plenty fast for most indie game ideas anyways.
This. There's a lot of "don't use gm, it's not for real game makers" which gets beaten back by people on the forum, so I find it a bit hypocritical for paul to say this. As far as I know, he's always been on of the "it depends on who's doing the making" guys, as opposed to one of the people who actually cares about the engine. It really does depend who's using it, and I think that (possibly) gm gets more good games, simply because more people use it, because more people CAN. it requires less skill, but the finished products can be just as good.

I don't always need one, sometimes I'll just have a small sketch, possibly with a couple of classes, and I'll just compile and run it from command line. Also, I occasionally code on my grandparents old laptop (10+ years old) and it doesnt really have the resources for a complex editor, so I just use beaver and g++

also the coding environment of gml isn't very good, it's very messy; i tried flashdevelop once and it's leagues better. this is what it typically looks like when i code my game in GM as you see, it's just a bunch of windows on top of each other, there's no tabbing That looks just like me programming c++ with notepad

lol
We've just hired someone who's made some extremely technically advanced engines and hasn't many finished games.
We also had to turn down a guy who had a number of finished games but their engine expertise wasn't up to scratch - the games just didn't feel fun enough. He needed to make a few more engines.
I think the employer argument doesn't hold up. Employers are looking for specialists to be part of a team.
i think the games not being fun is the big issue -- if the games were fun it might have been different for his chances. a lot of finished bad games is just as bad as a lot of unfinished games, if not worse but i don't really see why you suggest that making a few more engines would have made him better able to make fun games? are you suggesting that making a few more engines instead of spending that time making games would make more skilled at making games fun? if so, how do you understand that process to work? I think in this case, the point is that he had NEITHER of the skills that they were hiring for. The first person had good engine skills, but was lacking in game making, whilst the second person was lacking in both. If you were hiring, who would you pick?

Yeah, I'm starting to get over it, listening to
cover of the game of thrones theme, on loop, seems to be helping somewhat.
It's going to get worse next year though...I'm going to the same uni as her.
But still, life goes on, and George RR Martin will get me through this bit of it.

Just found out that the girl I have a huge crush on, and have been trying to work up the courage to ask out has got a boyfriend. They got together less then 3 days ago, at the opera, that I'm doing lighting for. I now have 3 days of watching them dancing together, without being able to look away.

That really sucks, especially so close to the anniversary. It sounds like you're on quite good terms though, so there is a chance you might be able to get back with him one day! Regardless, have a hug from me, and I hope this picture of a duck makes you feel at least a little bit better.

seconding the dk2 cursor, it really helped the immersion, you felt like you were actually interacting with the world, as opposed to just using an interface onto it.

All completely true. The ones you need to watch out for are these "art" schools, specifically the ones allan posted, but those are obviously bad from the outside in... Others, not so much...
Oh, I totally agree: it's always a good idea to look up stats of a uni before even thinking about applying to it, and not just things like number of people in a graduate job, things like number of staff, number of papers/year and accreditation, and links to other unis.

College was the biggest mistake of my life and a degree isn't even necessary for working in the industry. I quit school for the sake of working, because I was hired because of my skills and work ethnic, not some bullshit piece of paper.
Watch this:
Sure, maybe it's not all colleges, but try to avoid the for-profit ones like the Art Institute chain. It's like the fucking McDonalds of schools. Now I'm paying $500 a month in loan payments for the biggest waste of time I ever had. Just a heads up... If it doesn't feel right after a year, get the hell out. Don't waste 4 years there like I did. Trust me.
It really depends on what you want to do, for example maths, you NEED to go to uni.
