str weapons are so good. cannot believe how much easier this game is when you just break guard, or stun every enemy in the game. thank you +7 Great Mace.
bosses made trivial by 2 handed great weapons: all

Most of the bosses seem geared towards maximum pressure all the time and punishment at all ranges which makes them very hard to beat with anything other than fast melee weapons. Also some of them have one attack that is really easy to dodge but 1shots you if you don't (for example the dancer's grab or the soul of cinders' juggle combo in its second form). So fucking up one dodge can get you killed which is annoying especially in a long fight like the final one.
Well thats just not true lol.

I really want to make a big armor dude with a hugeweapon but i think that might not be viable in this game. like, the vitality you'd need to even roll properly would be ridiculous, and the armor wouldnt even necessarily save you from death it seems (haven't tested it myself, but I've heard mixed things about armor).
I think it should be possible with havel's ring. I mean in this game you can roll well as long as you stay under 70% load (rather than the 50 from previous games) and personally I've had no problem wearing a full knight set with the starting knight class on my PS4 copy of the game. im doing a heavy build with heavy everything and kicking tons of ass JUST AN FYI

I have those upgrades, but they didn't help me beat either boss. I can't get them down to half health so it isn't like I'm even close to beating them. The secret areas may be obvious to you but I'm clearly missing something. And as progression relies on finding those hidden things I guess that's game over for me.
ah man sorry i realize i sound like a dick. i dont mean to. so most secret paths are hinted at by details along the entrance to the area. like say, a bush/crystal that you can kind of see sticking out. in dungeons its stuff like broken tiles, or out of place looking details along the walls. they are pretty subtle sometimes but for the most part its easy to see. if i were able to id post some screenshots for you. a simple tip for boss fighting is NEVER stand still, and always dash. the frog boss can be stunned by the exploding guys he sends out if you can get them to blow up near him. the skeleton boss, you can trick him into destroying his buddies while they are in the crystals. reflect his bullets and shoot back at him. melee is kinda tricky because he has such a small window to counter attack. hes by FAR the hardest boss in the game. even the end boss is easier.

I made it to 6hrs play time. I still only have 3 triangles from the north and 0 from the west and south. I can't find anymore in those areas, and I'm fed up of trying to walk into every wall and bush. I've been able to find 5 triangles in the east though and met my second boss. I still can't beat either boss I've found despite maxing out my sword and gun, and buying bombs. I find the minions so easy it's laughable and the bosses completely impossible.
I think I'm done with the game now. I've not enjoyed it at all.
what. i beat the game in 6 hours. the bullet reflect, and extra dash upgrades totally break the game. after you have those two every single boss becomes trivial. you only need 4 triangles per area to unlock the boss. secret areas and side paths are... pretty obvious.

So I've played 3.5hrs of this and I'm really wondering if I should continue. I still have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing or why. I think my mission is to collect triangles, but I don't know what they do. I have 3 from the north and 2 from the east. I can't find any south or west. The whole 3.5hrs was spent wading through tons of really easy grunts, which I found extremely boring. I came across 1 boss at the end of my 3.5hrs who was way too hard for me. I keep talking to people to find out what I'm missing but they just fob me off with pictures that mean nothing to me.
To the people who have played it all the way through, is the whole game like this? Have I missed something and been stupidly wandering around playing the game wrong?
youre supposed to be finding and killing bosses. you need triangles to open the doors that lead to the bosses. this is clearly illustrated by doors with x number of triangles on them, that are locked. all NPCs are useless and provide no information. its odd, really, that people have so much trouble figuring out where to go. you can only go north, east, or west. the south area is locked out. locked out by big pillars with arrows on them, pointing in the other cardinal directions. as if you were to... beat those areas first or something. considering how straight forward each area is (they are all fairly linear with off shoots for exploration), i wonder how much of this confusion of where to go is on the player not trusting themselves. you dont NEED someone, or something, to tell you where to go. you just go. go as far into one direction as you can, and get your shit slapped by a boss. cant beat him? go as far as you can into the other directions. you play the game to play the game.

the environmental story telling in HLD is the epitome of "placing skulls next to a toilet". aside from scaling, this is the worst thing the game does.

Hell, 'guy with sword, and guy behind with longer range weapon that will often poke past if you attack front guy' is like, the most boilerplate copy/paste element in bb, and dks3 very rarely has any encounter even that interesting.
that happens a lot. especially in undead settlement (Yharnam Lite) and in/around Lothric. lots of encounters with knights that have shields. one with sword, one with spear. not that youre wrong but i was just playing through these areas again and these are the best interactions there. bb also made better use of dogs. i really like the hollows that mutate in ds3. i wish they made better use of that. its super cool to have a target you have to rush in on. however it was almost always surrounded by enemies that did nothing unless attacked first. kind of a shame because generally i prefer the enemies in ds3 to those in bb. but they arent used as well.

are those the dual wield hammers? i liked the sword too much to try out other weapons. also i had like 12 str through the whole game which really limited what i could use.
yeah dual wield maces, they're a pretty straightforward spam attack and poise break weapon, but their weapon art is just _another_ fast chaining attack, so they feel like they have a very flexible moveset for catching people and are super fun. ah shit that reminds me i want to try to dual daggers with the knight ring. i think its called knight ring? the one that increases the stamina damage that people take when blocking.

Regarding balance, you can kindof look at it like this: Getting invaded is the price you pay for embering and summoning 1000 babysitters instead of playing the game. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
this. also, joe, i solod the game with that ice sword you get really early on. had a lot of fun doing so. until then i used the bandit knife. was surprised that bleed works on a handful of bosses so that was nice!

The easiest way I could see fixing it would be to simply give an invader a number of flasks equal or less to what the host has.
Invader gets half estus flasks. Assuming you are picking up any drops at all, the invader is usually going to be facing 3 people with a combined 4x as many flasks as they have. meanwhile: pizza cutter is really fun in bb given their gear will likely be better as well invasion is based on gear and level. you can only invade people within +2 of your weapons level. so its not that big of a deal.

the only thing i dont like about multiplayer is that healing in pvp is super strong. Healing in PvP is complete and utter bullshit, and for early players very unbalanced. When I started and I myself only had a handful of Estus Flasks I was invaded several time by people who had flasks for days and no matter how much I out-fought them could recover their damage over and over and over (and over) eventually winning the battle by attrition. As much as I enjoyed PvP in DS2 I am not liking it much at all in DS3, they badly need to fix the Estus issue. The easiest way I could see fixing it would be to simply give an invader a number of flasks equal or less to what the host has. there are plenty of ways to prevent healing though. i just think its a little too strong in the early game. and like joe said, invaders almost always get pitted against 2+ people. otherwise i think healing is fine. it requires a lot of git gud to stop healing, and im not quite there yet, but its really satisfying to properly chase down someone and stuff their heal. using a crossbow comes highly recommended. otherwise use the talismans that stop healing. they arent called lloyds anymore. i forget the name. the tried and true unlock the targeting, and run after someone as they roll away still works well.

finished the game yesterday. every single boss is good. every single area of the game is good. this is by far the best souls game.
i cant think of any area that didnt feel fair. same for bosses. i love that bosses dont always do the same combos and that you have to really pay attention to what is happening. the final boss is especially good at this! i like every bosses gimmick. deacons were cool! giant tree was AWESOME. the weakest boss in terms of design is probably aldrich. not super interesting but it was, if nothing else, exciting.
i also never felt lost. which is something that is a very slight problem with ds1, and a huge problem in ds2. in terms of progression this feels a lot like bloodborne. mostly linear but with a couple of offshoots every now and then, but nothing that ever really loses the player. unlike bloodborne, ds3 does a better job of making these areas feel huge, and generally more interesting. if i had one complaint its that they used the thrall enemies in too many areas. but thats hardly a real complaint considering its only an issue to be cosmetically.
multiplayer is no longer convoluted! you get a full red eye orb super early in the game! all covenants are worth participating in! after the disaster that was bloodbornes multiplayer im so glad this was not the case in ds3. the only thing i dont like about multiplayer is that healing in pvp is super strong.
best game. now they can stop making them.
