selector infected WIXOSS is definitely the surprise of the season. I'm excited to see where it will go. Somewhere very unhappy though, obviously.

Akuma no Riddle, on the other hand ... is getting less interesting by the episode. What's the point of this show? If it's a one-assassin-per-episode deal I'd expect that the focus would be on the assassins and fleshing out their motivations and such. I guess it's trying to do that a bit, but it's brief and I'm not really feeling it. If it's the dynamic between the protagonists ... I'm not really feeling that either. One has no emotions and the other has no brain, but other than that they're fairly blank.

No Game No Life is also getting less exciting. Still fun, but the protagonists seem to be gaining some extremely thick plot-armour which in a show about playing games would ruin all the tension.

The themes are looking pretty good ... well, now anyway. I'm sure whatever theme gets announced will be shit because that's just the way of things, but for now I will be quietly optimistic.
Everything looks more inspiring than 'you only get one' and 'ten seconds' anyway.

@Jackwhat - mm, yeah, okay. I'm starting to think I'm a bit blind when it comes to fanservice - only the very obvious or very creepy seems to register. I didn't notice that one when watching the actual episode.

Nothing jumps out as amazing so far and I think I might be getting tired of anime, but there seems to be a few watchable things anyway.

No Game No Life's fanservice hardly qualifies - I can accept a pantyshot if it's caused as a natural reaction to falling from a great height while wearing a skirt (without the situation being specifically manufactured just in order to create the circumstances for which a pantyshot to occur, but this was totally plot-relevant). Didn't really notice anything else.
Black Bullet on the other hand - creepy.

I was judging the first episode.

Of the new season I've watched Blade & Soul and Captain Earth. Both look like shit.
Captain Earth left me wondering: 'Didn't I just finish watching this show?' The one Japanese-male-teenager fights alien invaders in a mecha while ground control yells nonsensical technobabble in poor English is something I'm getting rather tired of.

I used to be like that, but then I realised I actually want to finish something someday. So I stopped.

Grave of the Fireflies didn't do much for me either. I had high expectations of being upset, but wasn't.

Maybe it's because I watched it the day after I watched Threads and was already dead inside, but yeah, 'boring as hell' puts it nicely. It is nice to see anime that tries to tackle WW2 though.

It's pretty much time for the new season to start: http://anichart.net/spring

Looks decent, I guess.
31  Developer / Business / Re: My game is on Kickstarter with 3 weeks to go; is it too late for it? on: March 25, 2014, 07:07:04 AM
I would just like to point out that $52000 is an awful lot of money. Maybe not to make a game, but to expect people to give to you without any immediate benefit. It's your passion project, after all - no one else's - but it looks like you want other people to be absorbing all of the financial risk for it.
Perhaps you could give up on funding the whole game through kickstarter and hold a smaller one some time later to help you cover the art costs.

Log Horizon doesn't really seem like it's gone anywhere. There's no real climax building and none of the meaty parts of the story have been resolved at all. The stuff that is focused on isn't usually all that interesting. It was a nice enough show, but I think it's not going to turn out to be a memorable one.

It's also clear that the majority (or, at least, something more than random chance) is driving progression. When a strong will emerges to get somewhere, they get there. It's just a matter of building consensus and not getting accidentally derailed by the random elements along the way - but in the long-term such derailments will be overcome by a large majority (except permanent derailments, like releasing pokemon).

At the moment there's a big debate between going and getting Fly so we have something else that's effective against ghost type pokemon vs slamming into the ghost tower repeatedly until we finally make it through by sheer inertia (with a lesser option of grinding somewhere else on the table). There are good points for getting Fly (continually going up the tower is excruciating, if we get surf at some point we can get to Cinnabar easier later) and bad points (fly has all the problems of dig x10, plus it's not super-easy to get to, and progress is being made by repeatedly dying in the tower anyway ... very, very slowly). There's even propaganda posters for different plans, e.g. this.
But it failed to win the debate last time and we went up the tower. Just died about two hours later and are going through the debate again. Guess it will end if we make it into the tower again or if the pro-fly camp moves us out of Lavender Town. I forsee about an hour of navel-gazing in Lavender Town before a decision is made though.

oh, hey, we're in the tower again already. I'm quite surprised.
Hopefully they'll finish it by the time I wake up tomorrow.

this is actually really fascinating.
You think that people are trolling or retarded, but it's mostly confusion and lag. Most people seem to be cooperating, and when the problem is realised by enough people they work together to solve it. We were just trying to swap in pidgeot and it took a good 5-10 minutes because lag wasn't being accounted for. Eventually it was worked out: 'vote for what you think you shouldn't be voting for', and the votes for the correct answer started piling up. It's problem-solving in fairly adverse conditions.

Still, when my rice finally finishes cooking, I think I'll need to escape from this before it possibly devours my life. Everything takes forever and paying attention could eat up many hours. Reminds me a little of playing dwarf fortress?

edit: or maybe most people actually are being dickheads ... I can't tell anymore. I wish my rice would hurry up.

Just saying, but ... it's a good show. One of the best this season.
36  Player / Games / Re: Best non-rogue-like freeware rpgs on: February 16, 2014, 05:40:28 AM
Spiderweb's stuff isn't freeware - though might be worth buying.

Actual freeware RPGs is a big of a big ask, I think. Dark Disciples and Prelude to Darkness are the only two that spring immediately to mind. Prelude to Darkness is supposedly good if you can stomach the bugs, but I couldn't deal with it crashing every few minutes so gave up pretty quickly. Dark Disciples is cool though.

Have a look here
37  Developer / Technical / Re: Getting going with Haxe on: January 30, 2014, 05:31:46 AM
I use Haxe and Haxepunk. It is indeed just like AS3 except you can compile to other targets. I haven't noticed any other advantages, but that's probably worthwhile enough.

For Haxepunk it's often just easier to look for Flashpunk documentation. It's all basically the same once you've got it set up.

How do I join Zvezda? After the latest episode, I have nothing but sympathy for their cause. Please liberate this country from the oppression of smokers! Beg
39  Player / Games / Re: A New Series on my Channel Focusing on Japanese Games - Feedback Appreciated! on: January 28, 2014, 06:23:30 AM
The comiket doujin game preview videos are probably a good place to fish for titles. I think all the videos are made by Edelweiss, which if you want to look at quality Japanese indie games would be a good spot to start.
Games from Comiket are possibly not that easy to actually find though.

Otherwise, I have this bookmarked, but haven't ever used it.
40  Player / General / Re: College: Waste of time and money for indie devs? on: January 18, 2014, 07:13:26 AM
Are you already an indie dev? That is in the sense that you've actually released something, and possibly also in the sense that someone other than you thought it was good.

If not, you probably shouldn't be thinking from the position of being an indie dev. You should probably consider what else you can be doing in case your aspirations don't happen.

I liked my first two years of university and hated the second two, and I understand where you're coming from. But the piece of paper you get at the end can be fairly useful. Unless you're in a position where you're sure you won't be needing one, it might be best to stick around. Or not. Whatever floats your boat, but you might end up being equally restrained by working at a shitty job rather than what you had in mind.
I kind-of squandered my university time though. You should probably be using it to connect with other people thinking similar thoughts to you so you can get collaborations underway.
