and I was voicing my opinion as well.

a simple PM would have sufficed, regarding my comment, instead of further derailing this thread.

move along folks, nothing to see here.

so, how about that captain forever game?

It wasn't off-topic, he asked for feedback regarding Captain Forever, how its distributed is relevant :\

Anyways, cool to see someone's set up a ship database (or was it Farbs himself?). In case you didn't see it on his own front page, its at http://vcd.phuce.com/

Some of them do require reflexes, if I recall correctly, but nothing that's overly frustrating. Except maybe with the stars.

I had enough with the internet buzz. I don't really fee like going out of my way to play it Shrug

I don't know, isn't hype convincing you not to play it about as bad as hype convincing you TO play it? Better to ignore it and judge the game for yourself.
5  Developer / Design / Re: how to make reading text fun on: September 11, 2009, 05:46:34 AM
i myself never skip text until i've read it at least once, because you can never be sure they won't say something interesting or crucial to your progress in a game. if you can't know ahead of time that text will be both useless and uninteresting, it doesn't make sense to me to skip it just because i'm impatient to play the game faster.

the text in castlevania:sotn for instance was fairly interesting, in a b-movie humor kind of way. i mean, why would you skip DIE MONSTER, YOU DON'T BELONG IN THIS WORLD. and WHAT IS A MAN, A MISERABLE LITTLE PILE OF SECRETS! -- those are like emblematic lines, and if you skip them you're missing a lot of what makes SoTN so great.

I am exactly the same in this regards. Even if the writing is bad I'm compelled to read everything. I don't think I've ever quit a game for having bad writing either, unless it also had bad gameplay, in which case I'm quitting it for bad gameplay.

That being said I don't think we need gimmicks at all. All we really need is better writing. Writing seems to be an afterthought in most games outside the point n' click genre.

I think it's worth less than that!

I can't believe you would say that! Braid is the most fantastic game this side of the galaxy. Blahdy blahdy blah.
Overrated. Jonathan Blow BLOWS! HAH!
I'll list you five hundred reasons why Braid is a great game:
-----
Ouch. My eyes. Just because you're gay for Blow doesn't mean Braid isn't crap.
TROLL ALERT TROLL ALERT. Go back under a bridge you trolling troller.

Troll.
Exactly! Just because your game has no cred doesn't mean you have to hate on everyone elses.

^ That's gotta save us at least a few pages.

We can only hope. Anyways, most people must have played Braid by now, but if you haven't might as well pick it up. Even if you're not a fan of the narrative its a fun puzzler with some pretty aesthetics, and even if you end up hating it, 5 bucks is less than you would spend on junk food.

The anticipation is enough to burst a blood vessel. This will be the greatest game, no, thing, ever made.

Regarding fullscreen - Unfortunately flash only allows access to "non printing" keys while in fullscreen, so I can't read WASD (or Q or E or R or F or X or any of the other less important keys). I'm working on embedding different sized flash files into the page though, so it'll be playable in a selection of resolutions. Not sure if/when I'll get that finished.

Ah, that sucks. Not too big a deal though.

Also, how do you put HTML in your posts? Wanna post my friend's ship.

Fun game, can't wait to see the expanded version. Bought it and convinced a friend to get it too. Would you consider an option of being able to play it in full-screen? I'm pretty sure I've seen flash stuff that can do that even from a browser.

This thread really is dead, no one is here to comment on our gentlemanly duel  Undecided.
13  Player / General / Re: DeathSpank? on: September 06, 2009, 05:14:33 PM
The gameplay shown so far has looked generic, but I don't care as long as we get wit and humour to go with it. Besides, nothing wrong with a little mindless hack n' slash.

It is done! I actually ended up having less time to do this than I thought I would, but oh well, bask in my game and its silliness.

16  Player / General / Re: Are There Any Other Comic Book Fans Here? on: August 25, 2009, 07:58:42 PM
Huge fan of comics, but have lately been drifting away from most things superhero and checking out all the other great stuff this medium has to offer. Already read/reading a lot of things mentioned in this topic but I'll have to dig through it for more reading ideas, and then maybe I'll post my own list of what's not yet been mentioned.

Lucky (or unlucky) enough to have not played 1 and 2 yet, so I'm going to be playing the crap out of this.
18  Player / General / Re: District 9 on: August 20, 2009, 04:44:57 AM
I agree with the previous posts and stuff. Liked the movie, and characters are always more interesting when they're flawed. Like they would be in real life.
19  Player / General / Re: District 9 on: August 14, 2009, 12:24:26 AM
If you've seen Alive in Joburg and Tempbot then I wouldn't maybe call it "original" - this is definitely territory that Mr. Blomkamp has explored before, but I think it's just made him really really good at it - it's pretty compelling!

I meant more in the sense of original compared to the general state of Hollywood, as opposed to his earlier works. Will look into those though.
20  Player / General / Re: District 9 on: August 13, 2009, 11:43:05 PM
I'm going to go see it next Wednesday. I've heard good things, seems fairly original.
