Developer / Audio / Re: Most demanded indie music genre

This is a very good question for those new to game music.
Personally, as someone who's been on and off of some mods, I can confidently say that dubstep is indeed the only readily-accepted electronic music at this time, especially if the project in question is an action-ridden game. Your only other option if you prefer electronic over orchestral is dark ambient reserved for horror games. While I admit I have done quite a lot of the latter, I am trying to expand my genre specialties, which apparently will be close to impossible when it comes to what potential supervisors want.

I guess I need to update this thread. I realize I'm being overly ambitious, but I want to be involved with some sort of interactive story and despite how simple my main idea is, it will probably never exist unless I at least give input. In addition, one thing I don't like about many games, including almost all starter games listed in this thread, is that they involve killing things on a regular basis, often to the point of emphasizing that over the story. That said, one of my other threads mentioned the kind of game I wish to develop, which is an adventure game, the only kind of game that regularly implements most of my preferences. I realize I need to give up on this daydream, though. P.S. to Graham, you say that good games don't involve a complete idea developed before the actual design? Honestly, I wish that was the case...

Well, I probably am a beginner when it comes to indie games, though I have made a few personal game mods. I do prefer to work on a team regardless, though: while I do have some story ideas as said before, they're far from enough to make a game out of.

As of a few days ago, due to the press regarding Primal Carnage, a game I was tempted to play but can't because of my operating system, I've been having a phase in which I'm tempted to make my own game. Spent some of today learning Unity in order to see what I can do to accomplish that. I have some basic story ideas, but I stink at art, both 2D and 3D, combined with lacking marketing skills, so there's absolutely no way I can work on such a project on my own.
What do you guys think? SHOULD I start my own game? Or is this phase of mine causing me to be overly ambitious?

Thing is, I suck at 2D and 3D art (except where lighting is concerned), so there's absolutely no way I can do such a project on my own. Only question is whether I hire someone to help me out (which I don't have the money to do unless it's a portion of sales) or whether I use nonexclusive assets, which, obviously, is not recommended if it's going to be successful.

it appears the only other game like them readily available for modern systems is Dead Cyborg
... What are you defining as modern systems here? I admit I haven't been following the adventure scene in the past few years, but there has BEEN an active niche adventure scene for a very long time, largely ignored by the mainstream media. Anyway, there are multiple communities dedicated exclusively to adventure games of all sorts, Myst-like or not. try justadventure.com or adventuregamers.com for starters Well, first of all, thank you for reading this thread. When I say modern systems, I'm putting an emphasis on modern PC's and Macs; the ones I know of were for the older computers, which, in the case of Macs at least, won't work on the newer ones. I'll take a look. EDIT: It appears that justadventure.com, at least, is dedicated to fans of the games, as opposed to the developers, which is what I'm looking for.

Developer / Business / Interest in developing a Myst-like adventure game?

I would post this in either the paid or unpaid forum, but I'm actually posting this to see if anyone would be interested in developing such a game, first of all.
I've long been a fan of the Myst games, but unfortunately, it appears the only other game like them readily available for modern systems is Dead Cyborg, which is donationware on the verge of not finishing due to lack of financial interest for the developer of that project.
That being said, I really hope to be able to be involved in such a project. Is anyone else in the process of developing a Myst-like adventure game? If not, would anyone care to assist me in making one?

In light of reading this thread and other messages from REAL staff members (not directed at you, Derek), I'm not sure what to do with my thread about Unity3d music. It was not meant as an advertisement for my services, but it's not meant for recruiting people either. Should it be moved to the generic audio forum?

RoanSong, just keep networking. Your best bet for a first job is to comment on other people's WIP's and pray they'll contact you asking for your music. Which just happened for me, so it is definitely possible.

This looks very interesting! You have done very well with 3D modeling! Do you have music for this game?
