Not entirely sure why, but I can't get any of the alphas to run on my PC. Downloaded fine, but when going to run it just can't start the game up. And I've definitely got all of the required software etc

I must say this looks pretty awesome, I love what you did with the weapons.
Thanks! The weapons are probably the most distinct features of the game, hence why we spend a lot of time outlining how they work. It's a classic shmup by all means, except the artwork and what you can do to maximize the effectiveness of your weapons,

Would appreciate any feedback and support we can get so that we can obtain our funding goal on Kickstarter! If there's anything that you feel we should clarify on the page then please let me know. We'll be adding a FAQ soon so we can put answers in there for people to see. Oh, and the thing we're working on at the moment is the last levels around Earth. This is what Earth looks like in Humans Must Answer:

Humans Must Answer Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1166550020/humans-must-answer-an-explosive-2d-shmup-- INTERCEPTED MESSAGE FROM OUTER SPACE THREATENS ENTIRE HUMAN RACE -- Today, a message was intercepted by satellites based on Jupiter's Advanced Astronomical Science Wing that respected scientists and orbital governments are deeming a "threat to humanity". It read as the following: "Calling all humans! We have a number of your most important figures held hostage and we will destroy not only their lives, but that of your entire species if our demands are not met. Simply, if £5,000 is not pledged to the Humans Must Answer Kickstarter in the next 30 days then you shall perish under the might of our superior avian force.
We've collected three spokespersons from the hostages we've rounded up thus far, and they have the following to say:
"Yes, it does indeed look like a proper shmup in the most classic of manners and does come complete with some fantastic graphics and lots and lots of explosions." - Gnome, IndieGames.com
"But eggstraterrestrials galaxy-faring coop-flyers are – believe it or not – only part of what makes Humans Must Answer intriguing. The other half of that equation, then, is the oh-so-silly shmup’s pedigree." - Nathan Grayson, Rock Paper Shotgun
"There’s more to Humans Must Answer than simply blasting everything out of the skies, as you must creatively use your weaponry to take down seemingly unreachable enemies and trip switches in order to progress forward through the game." - Alex Coccia, Greenlit Gaming
DO FEEL THREATENED. DO BECOME ALARMED. AND DEFINITELY ACT ON OUR DEMANDS." The threat is being taken very seriously, especially as radars are picking up an unusual mass of sudden movement at a distant point in the galaxy. It is thought that this could be the source of the message and may indicate a huge armada heading for our Solar System. Humanity is being instructed by authorities to carry on life as normal but to be aware of and spread the message around in order to raise the funds necessary for our survival. Give what you can; our existence relies upon your compliance. HUMANS MUST ANSWER!

Just to let you know, I can't watch your trailer on your own website or on IndieDB due to a ridiculous advert they've slapped all over it. Video doesn't load and an ad appears instead. Soon as the ad is finished or you close it down (if it's picture not video) you need to press play on the trailer again. That brings up the advert again. They've just trashed your trailer and I wouldn't be happy about that if I were you.

Really enjoying the demo except there does seem to be something wrong with the jump button. Most of the time it's fine but I'd say about 1 time out of 10 (though it seems to vary in frequency) the jump button just won't respond when I hit it. I've tried the X button and using the on-screen button with the mouse and that seems to make no difference.
Gets a little bit frustrating after a while when you're dying mostly because the jump button isn't reacting when you do.
And regarding the falling logs, I actually quite like that - it doesn't really add much to the game though considering they only really affect you if you stop running on that log. Still, there's nothing wrong with the idea itself.

Community / Writing / Writers as responsible for "narrative logic"
|
on: December 20, 2012, 11:09:36 AM
|
Just over a month ago I wrote up a blog post on Gamasutra about writing for Humans Must Answer - an upcoming shmup. Thought I'd share it here to get some feedback on my thoughts http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/ChrisPriestman/20121112/181416/Writing_For_A_Genre_That_Doesnt_Welcome_Words.php
Here's an extract related to the title of this thread: What needs to be made clear is that game writers shouldn't just write a story and hand it over to the game designer or whoever else on the team so they can hinge gameplay around it. In fact, my experience was the other way around but more on that in a bit. A game writer is there to provide narrative logic to the game. Just as a programmer is there to provide mathematical logic and an artist to provide visual logic, I guess. To write up a story and to then to not get involved with the game development would be to abandon the project. As with all aspects of game development, the narrative and how it is conveyed will change constantly. Ideally, as the author, a game writer should be there to check on the consistency and coherence of their creation. If not then it's very possible that some aspects of it will get lost and that can cause ruptures throughout.

If you find this enjoyable and you two get a laugh out of it, by all means carry on.
Oh we intended on it. Also, lighten up a little, eh? This is a project we started about 2 days ago, in time it will BECOME the sexy. For now we're just in the process of getting there. I should point out that this is a serious project and we're intending to make a game much in the style of Resi Evil and Dino Crisis, with a bit of a Shadows of Memories twist. And yes we're having fun while doing it. Even so, the sexy part will actually make it into the final game - that's a fact!
