1  Community / DevLogs / Re: Fennel Fox [Low Poly Adventure] - Finished back in August! on: March 17, 2022, 02:26:54 PM
Uhhhh so I should've updated this along the way but...........

We released Button City back in August 2021 for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S!
The game became more and different and it was a full wild ride that I was so lucky to be part of.

I came back here to grab some of the gifs that I posted for the GDC talk I'm doing so I though I should update this thread to let everyone know that this project finished out.

Here's some images of the finished game.

If you want to see more you can go to our website. I'll probably come back here after GDC to do a full post of our development.

Hey thanks archgame! Tokyo Indies was really cool and everyone was extremely nice then. We also went to this Tokyo indie game expo a few days before the meetup and that was awesome as well.

For showing a game there you can demo at a table or if you show up early enough you can grab a presentation spot. We didn't have our laptops since we were on our honeymoon but we had video and screenshots so make sure you have something that is visually interesting. I do want to give them a shout out for being so awesome and giving us that opportunity even though we didn't have anything playable. They're a really great community.

Wow it's been a while since I did an update on TIG.
Well lets go over some cool things in the game!

First things first!
The game is now called Button City.

Fennel now has a cool new jacket.

You move between levels by zoomieing!

You have a cool crew of friends who call themselves the Fluff Squad.

Also there is an arcade!

More stuff later just wanted to give a quick update!

Hey everyone!

It’s been a while since I last posted. There is a good reason though……

I GOT MARRIED!!!!!! WOOOO!!!!!!

I even made a game about it which you can check out here.

Well off to updates about the game!

We're roasting up some tasty carrot dogs and slurping up some slushies.

Here's how you're going to chat to animal friends in the game. The bubbles even wiggle!

And here is some tool views on how we can add and change triggers in real time for quest sequencing with Yarn. This makes it much easier to test during runtime and to make sure save files work.

Also we did our first showing of the game to the Tokyo Indies Meetup while we were out on our honeymoon! Photo by the @tokyo_indies meetup. Big thanks to them for having us and having such an awesome event! Definitely check them out if you're ever out in Tokyo!

So now that we're married and have gone on our honeymoon we are back to the grindstone for this game so that mean more updates! We are gearing up to be at GDC 2018 to show it off to whoever want's to see. If you're out there hit us up and we can hang out :D

It looks kinda 1800's so are monsters going to be things like vampires and werewolves?  Gentleman

Loving the polish that you have within the game, that bloom really makes it sweet.

Maybe? I just remember there being a fairly large community using XNA and moving on to FNA and Unity. Not to say that the indie movement wasn't already gaining momentum but this was another wave of developers joining in.
9  Player / General / Goodbye XBLIG on: September 28, 2017, 12:13:38 PM
Tomorrow Xbox Live Indie Games is being closed and will officially be an end to an era. I just wanted to be nostalgic and thank XBLIG and XNA for getting me into games. I remember when I published my first game ever and it was for XBLIG with a game called Sky Cat. It wasn't all that great of a game but I was able to do a whole development cycle and that was super helpful as I moved on through my career.

I also remember some of the really great games to come out of it like Mount your friends or DLC Quest. Idk if there really is anything that is going to be like it (maybe Steam or itch I guess). It definitely had a tone of garbage but there were a couple games that really stood out and I think it helped kickstart the indie revolution that we have now.

Cheers XBLIG, I'll miss you. Beer!

10  Developer / Design / Re: Where do you start as a game developer . on: September 26, 2017, 02:07:05 PM
Unity is a way to get in quickly with a game engine. It does a lot for you in terms of collisions, rendering, editor tools, and gives you multiplatform out of the box. If you're interested in just making a game I would say grab that or another game engine such as Game Maker Studio 2 or Unreal. If you want to better understand how games work under the hood you could look into some books that have you make a 2D engine yourself in javascript or other language. Another way to go is to use a framework like Love2D or FNA that give you a bunch of code with help for drawing, audio, and input.

SOOOO many things so here's a list of great resources that you can check out.

Unity 3D
Unreal
Game Maker
HTML 5 Games
Love2D

Remember to start with something small so you can finish. No need for the MMOFPSRPG thinking till way later (and millions of dollars)

Also see if there's any game jams in your area to see if you can team up with someone who has made a game before. If not in your area check over at itch.io they have a ton of jams happening online all the time.

The images are super vibrant, what lighting and shader setup do you have? (C4D + Unity3D?)

We're currently using a Blender + Unity setup with a shadeless pipeline where we UV to a world texture that
everything samples off of. So all shading is done by hand by Shandiin. Super efficient and creates a cool look.

That is super adorable!

Are you sure you don't mean "Fennec Fox"? Or is it supposed to be named after the herb?

Definitely Fennel like the herb, in fact all of the characters are named after herbs :D

I really like the artstyle. Looking forward to it. Smiley

Thank you!

As a quick update I wanted to show you the tool we're using to do content scripting and dialog.

We are using Yarn by the awesome Infinite Ammo that was used for Night in the Woods with Yarn Spinner by the great The Secret Lab! Both are free and open source so you should check them out.

Here is a screen shot of one of the nodes where you're ordering some fancy coffee from the café. Coffee

I'll go into more of what we added to Yarn for our workflow in a future post.

Fennel Fox is off to the mart to find some tasty snacks! There's a little Vending Machine outside the Mart also. And what's this? One of those cool new Electric Cars!

I also wanted to share this little video of my SO Shandiin animating the Barista Mouse in Blender.

Hope you're having an awesome day!

I'm currently using Giphy Capture on Mac. I know that my SO is using something else that is much better but she also has the direct renders from Blender.

Hey all just wanted to share a new screenshot of the café with our little Mouse Barrista and Fennel Fox chatting. I'm finally out of crunch at my day job so I'll be able to post more soon.
Cheers  Coffee

P.S. I'm looking into how to get better GIF quality so it won't be so blurry.

Fennel Fox (Title TBD)

This little game is about a little fox going on a little adventure to find his keys so he can go home and play video games. It’s a cute low poly adventure game that is being made by me and my fiance.

We'll be updating this on this thread but we also have two Twitch streams for both art and programming!
