Has anyone else played Ghost Trick for the DS? I just beat it and it was absolutely incredible. One of the most inventive narratives I've ever played through.
Agreed. The animation was really pretty, too.
Seconded. I had a hard time believing that it wasn't 3D animation.

why not just make the sample public?

Because the samples I use are of work that I plan on actually filming, and I haven't had the chance to get them copyrighted just yet.

Hi, all.

Does your game have a good premise, but not much of a story?
Do you want to have characters that give more than controls and directives?

Well, this is where I come in.

You see, I'm an aspiring filmmaker currently in film school. Something that I do quite a bit of is writing for the screen.

But I sincerely believe that video games are as valid a storytelling method as movies or books, and I want to help prove this by writing games.

And honestly, I want to try lots of different types of games. I don't want to limit myself to a certain genre. I want to work with action, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or anything, really. Even some mish-mash of two completely opposite genres! As I said, I don't want to limit myself.

So, if you'd like someone to write the story of your game, I'm happy to offer my candidacy.

I'm very flexible, content-wise.

My strengths are:

 Cave Story - Adventurous
 Cheesy - Funny
 Cry - Emotional
 Tears of Joy - Touching

But I am also very capable at tackling:

 Kiss - Romantic
 Gentleman - Classy
 Shocked - Shocking
 Noir - Dark
 Cool - Badass
 Ninja - Mysterious

Writing doesn't just mean dialogue, of course. I'm perfectly okay with writing a silent game.

I really want to work on creative projects in which both me and the developer can grow and learn from the experience.

I would be working very closely with:

Animator/Art Director/Artist: In choosing how characters animate during certain scenes, or what facial expression to use if the text box is accompanied by a drawing of said character

Composer: In helping get the music just right for whatever mood he or she is trying to set.

Lead Designer: In figuring out which scenes go where, and what events (gameplay-wise) happen in between.

So, this is how it's going to work if you decide to allow me to work with you.

1. You choose the premise of your game. It's your game, and I don't want to impede on your vision.

2. If there are any specific story elements, sequences, or events that you want in there, let me know. This lets us bounce ideas off each other.

3. I am looking to write the actual script for the game, but if you just want me to be a story consultant, that'll be fine.

4. If the work is payed, do not pay me until the script is finished.

Also, if you'd like to see some of my work, message me and I'll send you a sample.

I look forward to working amongst you all.

Feel free to ask me any questions. Thanks for reading, and happy developing.

I just beat Ghost Trick for the DS.
If there's any justice in the world that game will get re-releases, sequels, and tons of sales.

I'd love to direct erotic movies one day.
Hey, as long as the script is good, go for it.

Is that what you're learning at your cinema school?
We actually just film porn, but we CGI the faces of famous directors (Kubrick and Malick mainly) on the actors.

Ah, Pixel Prospector! That is one of my favorite websites to check out - not only for the reviews, but for the development information that you can get there.
Yeah, I remember when he showed up and helped out for a bit before I disappeared into the abyss of what some people refer to as "the outdoors" or "life."

Wondered if freeware ninja means they play a lot of freeware games or they make a lot of freeware games.

Answered that "Freeware Ninja" means I used to devote my life to finding good, little-known freeware games that the public could play.

Hey, me too! I just have to get around to actually telling people about them.
Maybe one day you can be the next Freeware Ninja!
I actually considered starting a blog called Freeware Ninja, but too many things are called Ninja whatever. And my entire archives got destroyed after a critical pc failure.
That's a shame. I had quite a good run, and if I'm not mistaken, someone came along and took over (in a sense) and made this site.

Good to know I'm not alone.

Wait, that's not a bad thing, is it?

Thanks! I'm rather surprised I still have the label.
I have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Whatever happened to Demake competitions? Those always had me giggling like a little school girl.

Gotta go with Journey.

Although I do sit down and play through Cave Story every once in a while.

Some of the best story elements I've seen in games are exactly what they don't show you.

Take Shadow of the Colossus. The world set up is mysterious yet fascinating, but there are faint hints set up across the span of the game. It practically begs you to create your own puzzle pieces to fit together. And don't even get me started on how it supposedly correlates to Ico.

Another great example (and I just saw this film today) is Taxi Driver. Absolutely one of the most fascinating characters I've ever seen on film. We are given very little backstory, aside from that he was enlisted in the marines. But through his actions, we are able to piece together a lot of his backstory. It actually becomes a big chunk of the experience.

Recently I played through Bioshock: Infinite, and I've got to say, the audiologs were a work of storytelling genius. It was one of the most immersive and thought-provoking ways I've ever seen to tell a story (I mean, I've played the other Bioshocks as well). Gaming as a storytelling is a strange beast. Everything would get bogged down with description in a novel and there wouldn't be time to develop the world in a film. Here, we are placed in the world with a narrative to guide and motivate us through it, but that's only the half of it. The other half, is collecting these audio logs. This is something unique to the medium of video games. And honestly, I quite like it.

Just returned from a 2 year hiatus.

Now I want to write indie games.
