Yes.
But C++ is superior and you have no reason to not use it.

I am doing in C to practice C.

Also because I like C.

Also I plan in making the source available after the game is done, for anyone that want to see a C game Smiley

Also if you are good enough with C, you can code an almost entire program for iOS without using the hideous thing that is Objective-C++ (yes, that exists, for those wondering).
82  Developer / Technical / How I handle bullets in a shmup in C? on: January 22, 2014, 05:02:08 PM
I am trying to make a shmup in C...

And I am wondering the best way to store bullets, iterate trough them and delete them.

I thought at first of just putting them on an array, but then I would have to handle myself what happens if I delete bullets that in the middle of the array or something...

So, what you people think?

CandyJam rules says you get bonus points for stuffing Saga, Apple, Scrolls, and some other words in your game name

Looks really pretty. Will those characters be animated?

Yes!!!

One of the company owners is a animator, and we think not abusing his skills would be a great shame Wink

Seriously, I have a associates degree in animation, and using it to judge what we found for the budget that we had, this guy I am very sure is really, really, really good.

Now to prove myself... a GIF!!!

For those wondering our choices (that I mentioned earlier), we have choosen to use more resolution and less frames, the result is MUCH better, using less resolution was making stuff look very, very, very blurry on some devices, impossible to understand the image.

Also we decided that Retina screens will NOT use Retina animations, otherwise they end having not enough VRAM very fast.

So, small devices, small anims, medium devices, medium anims, big devices, medium anims (but big backgrounds and interface).

Frankly, if I could I would still be using XP.

Also I think HP decision is a good one, I bought a Win8 laptop only because I had no choice, and it still haunts me to this day (when you buy a OEM Win8 something, getting rid of Win8 to install Linux for example is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY hard... specially when you UEFI is buggy)

I decided to post a explanation of it: http://coderofworlds.com/piet-mondrian-de-stijl-and-pondrian/

Albeit simple, it is indeed a clever idea (clever name too) Wink

I don't know why, but I just imagined it being used as a screensaver Tongue

That might be a not bad idea! I will see later if I can do it.
88  Community / Townhall / Re: Piet Mondrian Pong (Pongdrian) on: January 18, 2014, 10:32:35 AM
Clever idea Smiley

Unfortunately, like I mentioned on my post, it was someone else suggestion Wink

But I thought it was awesome enough to try =D

Where is the awesome non-violent games for example? Or adventures?
Our game is an awesome (Durr...?), non-violent adventure non-platformer (it's sidescrolling and has things standing on stuff, but the submarine is free-floating, so I argue that it's not a platformer game). Giggle

Awesome indeed! Starting the topic with that awesome logo is already a punch of awesomeness in the gut!

Hello people!

Since a bit of time ago I make a pong game when testing a new language or API, it is not really on purpose, it just happen...

Anyway, after a while someone suggested me to make a Piet Mondrian Pong (that I named appropriately as Pondrian!)

Here is a Piet Mondrian painting:

Here is my game screenshot:

The game is made in Allegro, if you want to tinker with it, or compile for platforms that are now windows, the source is in GitHub

Otherwise you can just download the windows version

By the way, the game is without music for now, I was not motivated enough to make music without my midi keyboard to input the notes, so if anyone want to try to make a music appropriate for De Stijl, I would appreciate Wink

Any questions, just ask! Also feel free to do pull requests and whatnot on GitHub, or just give me suggestions.
91  Player / Games / Re: Dark Souls and Dark Souls II on: January 16, 2014, 08:10:22 AM
By the way, there is any weapon better than Black Knight Sword or Snakemen Sword?

I used the first for most of the game, until I could do a +15 with the second one (and it do like 20 damage more than the first one).

The Black Knight Sword is seemly so overpowered... I got it on the first Black Knight I killed, and then  I could just blaze through the game (excepting weight issues, of course, and the grinding needed to wield it), the thing do frigging crazy amounts of damage.

The problem with it, is that I ended never using any other weapons that might be cool, like spears, whips, whatnot... I DO tried Lightning Spear, but the damage was so shitty near the black sword... You know, it is so fun to hack a boss and see that each hit takes a huge chunk of HP bar (I think some bosses I could take 1/5 of its HP with one hit...)

Also I don't used any enchantment yet, the sword alone can kill anything I wanted to kill.

That is nice.

I am currently playing Dark Souls, and I got greatly bothered by the fact that only now late game (ie: after getting 2 of the 4 last souls) that I started using the Miracles, while I started the game with that in mind from start.

The reason for that is for most of the game miracles outright were useless or sucked, and when they became less useless (ie: after I got late game miracles that actually do damage or actually do useful effect) they were usually TOO slow to cast. I only started using them because now lategame some enemies are too dangerous to melee with them (like those dinosaurs in Izalith, or Demonite demons on narrow but long corridors), but can be killed with long range miracles.

The miracle gameplay greatly disappointed me.

Where is the awesome non-violent games for example? Or adventures? Yes, I know they exist, and that people do them, but why they don't get 20 pages long of replies only on DevLog? Why we don't see someone exploding with viral popularity when making a climbing simulator for example?

counter-example. my devlog for saturated dreamers has like 30 pages of replies, and is a non-violent top down adventure game

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=5947.0

it's not a platformer, and there are no crafting/minecraft elements

Your devlog is quite old... Over time I guess if you insist you will end building more replies.

What I mean is that platformers devlogs constantly are bumped to the top, and can get to 20+ pages in less than a year.
95  Player / General / Why platformers are more popular? on: January 06, 2014, 08:36:57 AM
Well, I love platformers, I loved most Metroid and Castlevania games, Cave Story, Mario, even some 3D stuff (like... Croc), and I have a special place in my heart for Prince of Persia, specially the 2D ones, and its look-alikes (Flashback, Blackthorne, etc...)

Still, there are hundreds of thousands, if not million games out there, many, many, many genres, so much interesting stuff, yet when I see the most popular games with the press, or the most popular devlogs here, they are all platformers!

I mean, sometimes we have a crafting game somewhere (Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, and clones of those) but usually, platformer.

Where is the awesome non-violent games for example? Or adventures? Yes, I know they exist, and that people do them, but why they don't get 20 pages long of replies only on DevLog? Why we don't see someone exploding with viral popularity when making a climbing simulator for example?

I ask this, because although I love those games myself, I think there is TOO MUCH of them, I want to play, and create, other sorts of games! But I am now almost regretting choosing this as my career, it seems that either you go AAA (with it shooter mania) or platform hisper indie with retroish platformers or platformers with unconventional graphics (ie: limbo...)

Or of course, you can go to casual land and spam *ville clones or Bejeweled Clones... But those do not get viral (Candy Crush expends several millions per month in advertising, their monthly ad expenditure for one game is enough to buy hundreds of smaller game studios...)

The crossroads of destruction and oblivion!

Oh, actually just happened that we will have to decide to use less resolution for the animations, allowing us to stuff more frames in the memory, or use hi-res animations, but with less frames...

Dillema, dillema, dillema...

Compared to the tree, your vine thing is looking really bad Sad

It is just like a mask that you grow in a static sprite, even if you used scaling (instead of mask) it seems it would look better.
98  Developer / Art / Re: We are designing a new main character, what you think? on: December 30, 2013, 09:10:00 AM
Hey!

This is how the main character looks like now

It is supposed to be a evolution of B with D clothes and helmet.
99  Community / DevLogs / Re: Nono's Adventures in Amazonia (Point and Click Adventure for Tablets and Phones) on: December 30, 2013, 09:08:55 AM
Hello again TIG!

We had some issues (ie: I had to move, and some other games to release, and the company in general was busy with other things) but we finally could make the second prototype.

This is how it looks now:

Note the main character is missing, also there is no animation, so I won't make a GIF of this.

The gameplay is complete, ignoring minigames that is. The engine that handle the puzzles, puzzle solving, whatnot is fully done, now the game need us to finish minigames, add animation and sound, and polish in general, still this is expected to take a while, specially creating the minigames.

Also this is the current idea for the main character design:

By the way, I want opinions on comparison between the old and new art style (don't worry about offending people, the artist is the same).
100  Community / DevLogs / Re: WizardWizard: You can't do spells but you can jump pretty good! on: December 12, 2013, 05:14:40 AM
There is a robot anime about that.

The anime that I forgot the name, is about a planet (I think it is earth in a far future) where everyone can do magic (magic is: manipulate quartz crystals shape upon touching them), but ONE guy can't. And it happens he is friend of the best soldier of country x, and of king of country y, and the two countries are at war, and this ONE guy that cannot use magic, find old mechanical and electrical giant robot, and only he can pilot it (sadly the anime crappily does not give any explanation of why magic users cannot use a normal robot...), and of course that robot is awesome, so it is up to this guy to prevent his friends from killing each other and save the world from a world war in the process.
