But it's not -you- the one who uses the sense of smell... and the olfative track in LoZ TP is just a visual clue to guide you, in the end.

Apart from sound, not many more senses are suitable for videogames. Well, not with current technology and without recurring to canned sex toys like... well, you know Smiley

It would be fine, if it was the primary way of orientation. That's why I cited Devil's Tuning Fork. Since we are limited to video and audio(and tactile feedback from some controllers, but that's so limited that it is almost negligible), the simulation of other senses through visual cues is an interesting way to work around it. It is a way of giving the player the impression of enhanced senses.

Edit: I've seen a headline about a device to help blind people to see by sending eletric pulses through their tongues. It is an interesting real life example of the simulation of senses, I should check it.

What was your most favorite part for making the WiiWare version of Cave Story?

I really like that the music and art was remade.

This irony is straight up killing me.

The graphics are surely awesome. The music may not fit very well(don't know, didn't play), but there is a clear reason why he likes it:

Going back to the original Cave Story, by the time it was completed I had listened to the background music enough times to hate it, so it's fun to play it with new music.

Just remembered.
A game that was purely based on sound was Soundvoyager, from the bit Generations series. Never had the opportunity to play it though. Unfortunately, I don't think a YouTube video would give me a good idea of how the gameplay is. Big Laff

At least I can take a look on LoZ: TP.

EA regurgitates, though. And rushes deadlines (DICE). And tries to take credit (VALVe).

And tries to push the same games at least once a year.

That's spam Vulpine.

Oh... sorry.  Sad
I thought it was just a clueless guy, but I didn't want to be harsh.

I have an interest in the experimentation with the use or representation
of non-visual senses as a fundamental form of output. Devil's Tuning Fork was an interesting experiment with a visual representation of echolocation.

Are there other games that explore this?

Putting the build hat while on a elevator stops it. Is this on purpose?

Edit: Also, will building be limited by construction time or amount of resources?

Hi. Did you introduce yourself already?

There is the XGamestation or whatever DIY console. Available from MAKE.

Wow, that's very indie. Grin
609  Player / General / Re: Power = Responsibility and Violence in Games on: March 26, 2010, 07:00:01 AM
It seems to me that the responsability the games try to avoid as a medium comes from the responsability already avoided by the individual games. I mean, in a game often you can kill and loot with little consequence, even inside the virtual world the game is placed.

If we want games to be seen in a more respectable way, maybe we should make games that demand more responsible courses of action.

Seeing the covers and posters I thought this one was just another teenager comedy and thought "Meh.".

Then I saw the trailer.

I don't think I was far from it, but didn't realize how awesome it was.
611  Player / Games / Re: Cave Story Wii on: March 25, 2010, 08:21:48 PM
What's uncharacteristic about it?

It can't be directly associated with Cave Story. Not the way Huzzah is.
612  Player / Games / Re: Cave Story Wii on: March 25, 2010, 07:23:13 PM
Then it's linear with some side quests.

It ain't no metroidvania where I come from I tell you what.

No, it can't be! It's a lie!

613  Player / Games / Re: Nicalis on: March 25, 2010, 07:16:25 PM
Or maybe he didn't really trust a group of not really well-known indie developers? Who knows? Maybe if someone goes undercover and exposes Nicalis should we judge them, but not now.

614  Player / Games / Re: HOLY CUSS, GUYS! SPELUNKY HD SCREENS! on: March 25, 2010, 07:11:37 PM
4- Will we have Super Spelunky HD, with extra characters and more lens-flare, coming out 2 months after the first version? Durr...?

I heard a rumor about the possibility of new characters. It seem it was cancelled due to all of them being sacrificed.
615  Player / Games / Re: Cave Story Wii on: March 25, 2010, 07:07:59 PM
cave story isn't a metroidvania

the game is more or less entirely linear, discounting minor unnecessary sidequests

And what if I don't discoun't them? Grin
...hmm, TIGdb has it tagged as one.

Uhhhhhh...so, why does anyone care whether Balrog says huzzah? Is this just sort of like the Cave Story equivalent of "you spoony bard," in that even though it's a stupid line, people are attached to it because of how strange it is?

Maybe, but I don't think there was an improvement. Now it's both silly and uncharacteristic.
616  Community / Townhall / Re: The Obligatory Introduce Yourself Thread on: March 25, 2010, 06:55:00 PM
Devil's Tuning Fork is simply awesome. The representation of navigation based in senses other than vision is something I always wanted to see in games, but never had the opportunity before.

It is great to have you here. Welcome.

Is is very important to the progress of our society to put aside our primitive concepts.
Only then we will be able to get over greed and Oooh! Shiny!

Lara croft anyone? How to kill a franchise that appeal to girl gamer because you never had a clue to begin with...

I don't think Lara Croft was made to appeal the feminine public to begin with.

Wait, if I remember correctly I read in an Indie Brawl topic it was Pixel and Nigoro that didn't want their characters in the game, not Nicalis. In fact, Tyrone even SUGGESTED movesets for some of the Cave Story characters for Indie Brawl.

Now that's weird. Maybe Pixel did this because he thought that's what Nicalis expected him to do.

He only stopped allowing ports after Nicalis contacted him, right?
