maybe this was a case of over hype let down with a dash of nostalgia.

Tastes like mushrooms.

We the community made free marketing for these games for them.

And that's basically why I don't see what is wrong with making requests and complaining, even more when it's a commercial game. We feel entitled because we are, at the very least, the most likely to buy, and often the ones to do word-of-mouth marketing, to post in our blogs, to make them known.

...why does this feels so much like political speech?

Guy works to bring great indie games to new platforms and make their creators some money.

Guy disregards community and releases unpolished game.

Community sees this as a bad thing and makes wild conjectures about him.  WTF

The Indie Brawl refusal was kind of ungrateful and I actually think it was a mistake to change "Huzzah!". It was a little thing? Yes, but it was a little thing cherished by many. I don't care and wouldn't care about other translation changes.

Sound bugs are a little more excusbale, it's not rare a game to be released with bugs. As long they are fixed, there is no problem.

One that autogenerates whatever I think about.

It's curious that I have art and music in my head but don't seem to have the dexterity to put them to paper.
One that could read my thoughts and generate them exactly as I see fit.
One that could read the minds of people around me and do it first.  Evil

I will add that this does set a shitty precedent for indie-mainstream relations.

I agree. If a publisher of indie games acts as a publisher of mainstream games, what's the difference.

Is Nicalis required by Nintendo to act like this?

One that is open source.
 Cool

Lua scripting would also be nice...
This one is open source, but still depends on DirectX:
Construct

Never used it though.

Also, they had starburst candies there, but they were placed decoratively around the food as decoration, not as food.

It's OK. I don't mind.  Grin

Not arguing against anyone, just noting.

This is unacceptable!
We are arguing here. Don't post here if you just want to note things.

Durr...?

630  Player / Games / Re: HOLY CUSS, GUYS! SPELUNKY HD SCREENS! on: March 25, 2010, 09:10:43 AM
Unless it's trivial to implement, I think you should stick with the high res graphics only for this version. The PC version already exists, and having to support the pixel art legacy only serves to complicate any features you implement.

Partially agree. Since the game will have gameplay differences, playing the PC version won't be the same as playing the XBLA version with pixel graphics.

I know it probably wouldn't be trivial, but if the implementation of a classic mode results in the necessity of redoing a great amount of work, it isn't worth.

None of the stuff leveled against Nicalisa sounds unethical to me, while you might not like their decisions all of it makes a lot of business sense to me. Asking people to remove youtube videos, not wanting your IP in some other person's game, choosing a single platform where you think you'll make the most money. If I was in their position I probably wouldn't have made those decision but I can see and understand why they'd be made.

I agree that this Nicalis bashing is going too far(I'm talking about you googoogjoob).

I believe the YouTube video removal would be unethical, but the videos are still there, so it either didn't happen or was reverted, so it doesn't matter.

However, not wanting the characters of an originally freeware indie game in a freeware indie crossover and stopping a game from Nifflas from being published in the it was originally intended for, which is the platform of all previous Nifflas' games and thus the most common plataform among Nifflas' fanbase, show lack of community awareness.

The worst I can say about Nicalis is they don't seem totally in tune with the indie community/hardcore fans... but that's far overshadowed by the fact that they care enough to bring these games to a console and a new audience.

I'm not sure. The community is very important in the marketing of indie games. If the community doesn't show a positive response, the games will having a harder time to compete with other numerous Wiiware games. Word-of-mouth gets more important by the day.

Now I have to ask why you decided to play BOSS RUSH which definitely contains EVERY BOSS IN THE MAIN STORY before playing the main story.  Huh?

Or, more specifically, why you were surprised that playing through all the bosses spoiled some of the storyline.

Because I'm curious. Grin

And it usually doesn't spoil much in Metroidvanias. Except this one.

5 modes, all unlocked from the start

for the record, this IS the right way to do things! 'spoilers' are hardly spilled milk.

I'm not sure about it. The new player is the one that needs more to have the experience preserved. Sure, it's good to have all gameplay options available, but what about the cave story.

If I began exploring modes and received a heavy spoiler, I might not even care (Oh, it's that rabbit thing I fought in the Boss Rush/It's that stage from the Time Attack), but that's the problem. It makes you care less. It detracts from the experience.

If I go online, spoilers are natural, but while playing I expect the game not to spoil itself.

P.S.: Hmm, maybe they could be unlocked by a code.
634  Player / General / Re: Male Power Fantasies on: March 25, 2010, 06:45:00 AM
the epic of gilgamesh was about some badass bro rompin' stompin' over the shop. why is this considered to be a new and pressing matter?

What would be an example of female power fantasy?

Exactly. Because it can only be one or the other, right? And there would already be an over-saturated world full of games that pander to the "female power fantasy", if such a market existed.

That's not what I meant.

I did assume that since there is a "male power fantasy" probably there is a "female power fantasy", but I in no way suggested that, since there are too much "male power fantasy" games, this is what we should do instead. I just wanted to know what would be a "female power fantasy", since "power fantasies" in games seem to be predominantly masculine. Then again, there could be several "female power fantasies" which I was not aware of or did not identified as such.

For the record, I never liked "huzzah" because I don't know how it's supposed to be pronounced and it sounds like something a weeaboo would love to use as a mantra just because it's an obscure reference (like "girugamesh!")
Strangely enough, it comes from the english language.
637  Player / Games / Re: Cave Story Wii on: March 24, 2010, 06:13:58 PM
Ok, I'm not sure we have the cave story entirely right. What I gather is:

  • DeceasedCrab's Cave Story videos are still in YouTube.
  • Audio bugs were acknowledged by people involved.
  • "Huzzah!"(particulary cherished catchword) was changed, but some possibility of reverting back was rumored.
  • Nicalis didn't allow any Cave Story stuff in Indie Brawl.
  • Nicalis seemed to be very open and fanbase-aware during Cave Story development.

I have mixed feelings. It would be good if Tyrone or someone else with authority at Nicalis clarified what is going on and what they intend to do.

Bashing them without the whole story won't help. We also need to know how much Nintendo was involved in all this.

Gentlemen, I weep, for I have seen the future of Photoshop, and it is glorious.

the first demonstration is all right, but wait until you see the very end.

Wow, content-aware magic.  Shocked

Since I see we are not limited to indie games...

Technically we should be, but since nobody (else) complained so far, I don't know.
640  Player / General / Re: Male Power Fantasies on: March 24, 2010, 02:52:04 PM
also, you do realize there's quite a big difference between that video and what we're saying here, right? that video is about 1000x times more offensive than saying that it's common for women to want to raise the best child.

Of course. My point was that the responses to the video were so far off the mark that we have a long way to go.

Also, it's a general failing of language that when I say, "Women tend to behave like this," somebody will interpret that as a way to classify women.  Facepalm

Well, it is. You shouldn't worry about that either.
Gender influentiates the way we act, trying to identify common behaviors among people from a certain gender is completely normal. Of course it doesn't mean 100% will fit, but as long as the great majority does, it is a valid classification.

People should stop being offended by the truth.
