Huh, I just discovered that Stalker was filmed entirely in Estonia, mostly at a river just off the highway where I have to drive to get from Tallinn to my grandparents' place in Parispea.

I love both Roadside Picnic and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, but I could never get very excited about that movie.

It is very slow, I'll admit that, and the fact that it's Russian is another big hurdle.  It's also full of seemingly meaningless imagery that can seem like poor direction.  I think, however, that Tarkovsky did that very deliberately to make us sympathize with the unnamed stalker.  The true nature of the Zone is ambiguous - so are the meanings of the various elements and qualities of the film.

Just watched Сталкер (Stalker) by Tarkovsky.

It was a trip, I will tell you that.  Felt too real.

Vulkan is OpenGL Next!

https://www.khronos.org/assets/uploads/developers/library/overview/2015_vulkan_v1_Overview.pdf

Notable points:
- official debugging suite
- SPIR-V shader bytecode
- unified desktop & mobile
- supported on OpenGL ES 3.1 (OpenGL 3.3-ish) hardware
- implementations later this year!

In the real world the bulk of this shader would be split between the tessellation and fragment shaders, not done as one big raycasting fragment shader.

It's pretty simple when you break it down, actually.  One chunk for handling the waves through a hybrid of a Fourier series and Perlin noise, and another chunk for evaluating color through Fresnel.  It says it does subsurface scattering in the description but I can't find any evidence of that in the source.

Crashes my video driver after a minute or so on top of that.

Yes, it should be.  Nice catch, I fixed my answer.

glVertexAttribPointer() has been replaced with a better API

Which one? Cannot find anything related to this.

I wrote an answer on GDSE that might help:

I don't wanna hijack the thread but I feel this is another hidden gem of that era (at least on this side of the pond).

It's called Do-Re-Mi Fantasy, beautiful game for the SNES.  It's not officially translated, but there is a (rather poor) English patch.  Game's straightforward enough that you probably don't need the text anyways.

Personally I've had a lot of success on Linux with Arch, believe it or not.  I've never done it myself but it looks like it's pretty easy to install a 64-bit environment and then set up a "32-bit chroot jail" for compiling and testing 32-bit programs without multilib.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Install_bundled_32-bit_system_in_64-bit_system

Of course, with Arch there's the hurdle of a somewhat verbose installation and then getting X working from scratch, which may or may not be your thing.

For Linux yes, you still should provide both versions as it hasn't gotten any easier to set up 32-bit compatibility on a 64-bit distro.  Unless you're using a lot of RAM (over 2 GB), a 32-bit executable will be fine for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows.

literally no children anywhere don't grow up watching japanese animation now

Admittedly the exposure through 4Kids dubs/bastardizations (at least in NA) is not all that great.

(not anime but you get the idea)

They really are.  Hell my then-60 music teacher showed us Nausicaa in middle school and a few of my friends have watched Spirited Away.

libuv has a large suite of filesystem handling functions and it's incredibly portable, and also pretty lightweight.

Man, why is GDC so expensive?
It costs more than 500 bucks to do pretty much anything GDC-related.

Yeah, here's hoping this will go in the vault.  I'm sure it will since it's such an important milestone.
